Event 5 Report

The Total9ball Amateur Series continued this weekend with Event five of the 10 event series. St Albans again played fantastic hosts as a strong 28 player field traveled to Hertfordshire to compete for prize money and crucial ranking points to up there seeding for next month’s mid-season Grand Final. Matches kicked off at 10.15am, with each player in the draw twice... Was today to be the day where the Jackpot was won?

The total prize money for a Jackpot winning player was a cool £625. To complete the Jackpot one player must remain undefeated in both tournaments and would therefore play themselves in the Final. Chris Buckmaster returning from a few months break from the action still looked as sharp as ever, in round one he defeated current T9B ranked number one player Rattapol Sassmann 7v5. Chris followed this with a 7v3 winning score line against Steve Davison. There were a few players who booked two spots in round two, they included Aslam Abubaker, Chris Goh, Mark Parker, Paul McMichael, Simon Widlo, Tommy Donlon.

Tom Staveley got off to the worst start possible only winning 3 racks in his first match as he lost one life to Chris Goh 7v3. Tom did however follow this result with an impressive win against Total9ball’s most successful player Courtney Symons 7v3. Match of the round involved Tommy Donlon and Tony Burton, the match was full of high class shot making and went all the way to hill-hill but it was Tommy who advanced 7v6.

Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

During the first round of matches Total9Ball were selling raffle tickets for the 10ball break dish roll up. All collected money was divided by 10 to give each ball a value, in total £120 was collected so it was announced that each ball potted would be worth a whooping £12. The lucky player drawn to step up was Mark Hughes. All matches were stopped as all 28 players gathered around the table to cheer on Mark as he made his attempt. Mark broke the balls well and one dropped so £12 was announced. After each shot Mark was given the option to stop and collect or continue risking the so far collected winnings. Mark took on the one ball to the middle pocket but unfortunately jawed it. Unlucky Mark but the pot will now roll over to the next event and will begin at £120, if sales remain at the same level at the next event it will be minimum £24 a ball.

Back to the tournament and on to round two. Tommy Donlon looked in cruise control as he defeated Shakz Islam 7v2 and ended Courtney Symons event early 7v3. Chris Buckmaster was shining on the table as he dropped just six racks defecting Gary Bullocke 7v5 and Simon Widlo 7v1 to take two of the last 16 positions. Phil Wildman got the better of Mike Stanley 7v5 while Tom Staveley looked confident as he reported a 7v4 victory over Aslam Abubaker.

Moving on to the last 16 of this event and it was great to see both Lionel Brown and Mark Hughes playing so well. Lionel Brown ended Mark Parkers Jackpot dreams 7v3 while Lionel’s good friend Mark Hughes impressed with an excellent 7v4 against T9B Amateur Series 2013 Grand Final winner Liam Monk. Something had to give as Ramesh ‘G Force’ Gokhul took on Tommy ‘The Disher’ Donlon, both players prior to this match were unbeaten, the match swung one way and then back the other but what was key was Tommy’s break. Tommy ended up taking the match 7v5. Phil Wildman and Tom Staveley were both due to play Chris Buckmaster in the round of 16 and both players were in no mood for anything other than a Quarter Final space. Phil and Tom both advanced 7v2 and ended Buckmasters return event.

The Quarter Final line up looked full of class and we knew it was going to be an exciting end to another brilliant T9B event. Phil Wildman and Mark Parker are the guys behind Total9ball events but for this Quarter Final match they were 100% committed to reaching the Semi Finals. Phil flew out of the blocks and Mark looked tired after a long days play. Phil kept the lead throughout the match and ended up the victor 7v2. Tommy Donlon produced an excellent comeback from the death against Mark Hughes. Mark began the match potting everything in sight as he opened up a 5v-1 lead, unfortunately this was where the wheels fell off for Hughes due to a few pieces of bad luck, Tommy showed true fighting spirit as he battled back winning 8 straight racks to complete a sensational comeback 7v5 was the end result. Lionel Brown came up against ever consistent Ramesh Gokhul. Lionel began the match well winning a couple of racks but Ramesh caught the handicap up quickly to level at 3v3, Lionel wouldn’t lead again in the match as Ramesh advanced 7v4. In the Final match of the Quarter Finals, Tom Staveley took centre stage as he took on the only remaining Jackpot player Tommy Donlon. So far Tommy had kicked each player put in front of him into touch, could he do the same to Tom? The answer was no. Tom was flying and making very few mistakes, Tom struck up a 5v-1 lead, the match ended 7v0 to Tom Staveley and this result meant The Jackpot would rollover to the mid-season Grand Finals and would now increase to a £280 bonus on top of the Winners and Runners Up money.

The Semi Finals seemed to be over faster than you could blink as Phil Wildman prevailed 7v3 against Tommy Donlon and Tom Staveley got the better of Ramesh Gokhul again in impressive fashion 7v2. Before the Final began Phil and Tom agreed there would be no split on the prize money. The standard of the final was very high with 7 break and runs in total. Phil tied the match up at 3v3 but then Staveley clicked into gear taking a 5v3 lead. Phil broke dished to reduce the arrears to one rack 4v5. Tom however was playing flawless pool and played the next two racks mistake free to win the event 7v4. Very well played Tom.

Another well run event by Total9ball and Tom Staveley was a well-deserved winner. Tom Staveley was involved in T9B’s first ever event in Solihull many years ago and the improvement in his game is incredible. Tom is now a player most would like to avoid in the draw and proved again yesterday he is more than capable of winning events. This is a perfect example of my point that getting involved in as many tournaments as you can is the best and fastest way to improve your game.

Thanks to St Albans for sponsoring T9B with their excellent facilities so we could host this event, again there were many comments yesterday by the players of the high quality of the tables in this venue. Thanks to Nicole Hansen for keeping the event running smoothly and a long days hard work, Thanks to Mark Parker for taking lots of photos in between his matches and to all the players who competed in this event.

We are planning an event for the 10th May. We know lots of players are away in Holland and various other events but we hope anyone who isn’t busy will join us for a fun event with lots of side games.

About The Tour

The new Total9ball season is here and the Amateur Series is back for its 5th successive season and we must say it looks better than ever. During the close season T9B have secured a fantastic new sponsor of Dynamic Billiards. We are proud to have Dynamic Billiards on board and I’m sure you the players will enjoy the enhancements this sponsorship deal will add to an already brilliant series. Adding Dynamic Billiards to our superb current sponsors Hurricane Room, Kamui, Sanctuary Cues, Rileys and Ultimate Breakmasters shows The T9B Amateur Series is clearly the UK's biggest and best. Make sure your apart of this season, I promise you wont be disappointed.

Last season we used the 2x double chance format for a second season and again it worked very well with players gaining the maximum value money and getting the opportunity to play 9ball using one of the most fresh and exciting formats to ever hit UK 9Ball. This season we have decide to stick with the popular format and expect this season to be more popular than ever.

The T9B 2x Format

T9B double chance events seem to be the most popular format we use, we believe the reason behind this is because it offers unbeatable value, players are entered into the draw twice which means players can lose a match but still be the overall winner of the tournament, it guarantees each player a minimum of two tense knock-out matches and also means each entrance has the opportunity to get in the prize money twice. Feedback regarding these event has always been brilliant and therefore we feel using this format is the way to get the most players involved. Win all your matches and you can collect the Winners and Runners up prize money... a very nice days work. A beautiful glass trophy is awarded to the winner of each event and also to the overall winner of the rankings after the five event series.

Side Events

The break dish will continue as a roll up. The break dish roll up was first used at T9B events last season and as it wasn’t won the pot has now accrued to £100, this amount will increase each event until it is won. Raffle tickets will be sold at each event for £1 for 3 tickets. All money collected will be added to the pot. After the first round of matches two tickets will be drawn at random, the first player drawn will have the opportunity to break and dish the balls to take the pot. If unsuccessful the second player will get the opportunity, if the second player also fails the pot will roll over to the following event.

Rules

**A legal 3point break must be made
**If a player makes a Golden break or combos the 9ball into the pocket, the 9ball will be placed on its spot and the player will continue his turn.

The Series will begin on 28th September 2013 and will consist of ten 9ball double chance events , a mid season Grand Final and an end of season Grand Final.
