DICE WIN OVER THE ACES

The fourth match of the World Professional League’s Playoffs pitted the Philadelphia Aces against the Las Vegas Dice. The match took place at the WPBL Arena in Las Vegas, NV Friday February 8, 2014.

For the fourth straight day, the lower seeded team ousted the higher seed from the playoffs. The Dice won a 28-7 shoot-out in the final game of the match to defeat the Aces 8-6.  The Dice rallied to score the final 3 match points after blowing a 5-1 lead at intermission.

Charlie Williams, John Schmidt, and Max Eberle opened the match with a 30-18 win over the Aces to jump out to a 2-0 lead. After the two teams traded shoot-out points in the next two doubles games, Williams and Eberle soundly defeated Darren Appleton and Brandon Shuff 30-6 to take a commanding 5-1 lead at half-time.

However, Philadelphia would score the next 5 match points in singles play, thanks in part to Appleton shutting out Williams 30-0.  Stevie Moore handled Schmidt 30-16 to put Philadelphia ahead 6-5, heading into a thrilling last game of singles between Shuff and Eberle.  Eberle was victorious in that contest, sinking the game winning ball on the final shot of regulation for a 30-27 win, lifting the Dice to a 7-6 lead.

CRUISE UPSET THE HUSTLERS

In the third match of the World Professional Billiard League’s 2013-2014 Playoffs the Houston Hustlers took on the Miami Cruise at the WPBL Arena in Las Vegas February 7, 2014.

A difficult cut shot by Jose Parica clinched the match for the Cruise, who upset the Hustlers 7-4 in Friday’s first round of the WPBL Championship Playoff tournament. Miami only needed to avoid a shut-out in the match's final game of 3 on 3, which happened when Parica sank a one point purple ball giving #10 seed Miami the win.

Miami had a chance to clinch the match a game earlier in singles, however Hunter Lombardo couldn't finish off Justin Hall in a shoot-out that Hall won 31-18, putting Houston within 7-4. The loss was the only one for Miami in singles, as Jose Parica and Corey Deuel knocked off Chip Compton and Jeremy Jones 30-9 and 30-10 respectively.

Houston's only regulation win came in doubles, when Compton and Hall defeated Parica and Lombardo 30-21 to tie the match at 3-3 at intermission.

Miami's win makes it three straight lower seeds to pull off a first round upset after #12 Atlanta and #11 Pittsburgh were victorious in the first two matches of the $120,000 single-elimination tournament.

The Cruise will face #4 seed Minnesota Outlaws Tuesday at 6:30pm PST in the second round, while Saturday's match features the Philadelphia Aces vs. Las Vegas Dice, also at 6:30.

FLORIAN “VENOM” KOHLER PERFORMS AT HALFTIME

Thee World Professional Billiard League’s 2013-2014 Playoffs began today. First round action saw the #5 seed Los Angeles Wave vs. the #12 seed Atlanta Scorpions at the WPBL Arena in Las Vegas.

Johnny Archer’s Atlanta Scorpions upset Oscar Dominquez’ Los Angeles Wave 8-2, capturing a victory in the first ever playoff match in the history of the WPBL. The Scorpions capitalized on several uncharacteristic Los Angeles mistakes, and picked up a pair of one point shoot-out wins in the first two games of the match. Dennis Hatch and Shannon Daulton knocked off Ernesto Dominguez and Louis Ulrich 30-6 in doubles, giving Atlanta their first regulation win of the match, lifting their lead to 4-0.

Archer and Daulton picked up another regulation doubles win just before intermission bringing Atlanta's lead to 6-0. Archer all but sealed the match as he easily handled Oscar Dominguez 30-1 in the first singles game of the match, for an 8-0 Atlanta lead.

Los Angeles' lone win of the night came in the second singles game of the match, when Ernesto Dominguez defeated Hatch 30-12. Fresh off his stellar play at DCC, Shannnon Daulton clinched the match for Atlanta by scoring a single point to start the next game against Ulrich.

Trick-shot artist and Internet sensation Florian “Venom” Kohler performed at halftime wowing the crowd with not only his amazing artistry but also with his quick wit. He will perform again for WPBL fans on February 9th in-between the double-header featuring Scot Frost’s #4 seed Phoenix Fire vs. the Atlanta Scorpions (1pm PT) and Rodney Morris’ #3 seed Chicago Rockets against the winner of the Toronto Blue Sharks vs. the Pittsburgh Poison match (6:30pm PT).
