Staveley Pots instead of Chops en-route to Winning the T9B Hurricane Open

Tom Staveley has finally broken his Total9ball duck. Tom, a regular player at T9B events, has recently been achieving some good results however in the past he has always fallen short. That changed yesterday though as he looked confident and in his words at the after tournament meal when asked what he did differently he replied, ‘Well today I potted the balls instead of chopping them’. After the event the T9B founder said, ‘We are really pleased that Tom has won today's event, Tom has been one of Total9ball's biggest supporters since we began 3 years ago, right back at the first event in Solihull 2010 Tom was an enthusiastic player but had a lot to learn as a relatively new player to the game of 9ball. With each event we have seen progression in his game and now he has won an event we fully expect him to push on and become a multiple tournament winner.

The new venue to T9B at High Wycombe played fantastic hosts, the club recently refurbished looked beautiful and the tables were well looked after, the cloth and the tables where very true but a little slower than the tables at St Albans. We are pleased to say The Hurricane Room in High Wycombe will definitely feature in next season's programme of events.

The Hurricane Open was arranged last minute to give the players some pool action this weekend, the format used was the T9B created league stages, gone are the days of groups stages where players have the chance to help friends through to the next round, using one league table nobody really know when they are safely qualified. Each player played their way through four league stage qualifying matches with the top two being seeded into the Semi Finals and the next four players in a playoff round for the remaining semi-final positions.

Phil Wildman topped the league table with 4/4 wins beating Ken Ng 7v2, Tom Staveley 7v4, Lionel Brown 7v3 and Tamar Al unfortunately had to withdraw before his final match due to illness. Mark Parker's form has clearly continued as he reported 3/4 wins to finish second in the league with wins over Tamar, Mark Hughes and local talent Danny Johnson, 7v6, 7v5, 7v4 respectively, Mark did however lose his final match of the league stage 7v6 to T9B Rookie Champion Sunny Garib. Tom Staveley the eventual winner of the event also recorded 3/4 league results,

Tom's day began with a tough match up against a very keen English pool player local to the High Wycombe club Russell Thomas. Tom battled and the extra 9ball experience showed as he overcame Russell 7v6 however it was clear Russell is a very good cueist with a perfect cue action and we hope he plays a bit more competitive 9ball as I really think he could be a class player with more experience. As mentioned earlier Tom was then defeated by Phil Wildman 7v5, but Tom was soon back in stroke with a 7v3 over Ken Ng followed by a 7v4 over Lionel Brown. Below is the league table with the other qualifiers results.

Numbers indicate.... P     W    L ......     Racks Won

1 Phil Wildman        4     4     0            28
7v2 Ken Ng /// 7v4 Tom Staveley/// 7v3 Lionel Brown/// 7v0 Tamar

2 Mark Parker         4     3     1            27
7v6 Tamar/// 7v5 Mark Hughes/// 7v4 Danny Johnson/// 6v7 Sunny Garib

3 Sunny Garib         4     3     1            26
5v7 Danny Johnson/// 7v4 Ken Ng/// 7v2 Jazz Bamotra/// 7v6 Mark Parker

4 Tom Staveley        4     3     1            25
7v6 Russell Thomas/// 4v7 Phil Wildman/// 7v3 Ken Ng/// 7v4 Lionel Brown

5 Jaspal Bamotra     4     3     1         23
7v4 Mark Hughes/// 7v2 Danny Johnson/// 2v7 Sunny Garib/// 7v4 Ken Ng

6 Chris Buckmaster 4     2     2         26
6v7 Lionel Brown/// 7v1 Tamar/// 6v7 Mark Hughes/// 7v3 Danny Johnson

So Phil Wildman and Mark Parker auto qualified for the Semi Finals and the playoff matches to be played were Sunny Garib 5v7 Chris Buckmaster and Tom Staveley 7v3 Jaspal Bamotra. The Draw for the Semi Finals was complete and it meant both Semi Finals would be played off level handicaps, the results were Tom ‘Stability’ Staveley 7v4 Mark ‘Essexpanther’ Parker and Chris Buckmaster 7v6 Phil Wildman.

The stage was set and the final began, Tom made full use of his 2 rack handicap head start and raced into a 6v1 lead, Chris clawed a rack back but the writing was on the wall and Staveley ran out to complete a big 7v2 victory.

A good days pool for all involved today. The feedback on the club was good which is a great start to a new venue. Thanks to the bar staff who were very helpful and polite and to Hurricane Room for the use of the facilities for the day. Thanks to Big Dave for taking some photos and to Nicole for running another smooth well timed event. Thanks to all the players who supported this event, I hope that you all enjoyed your day win or lose.
