The 8-Ball Champions: David Alcaide, Fred Dinsmore and Line Kjoersvik (l.t.r.)

8-ball competition ended in Portoroz

The Dynamic Billard European 8-ball Champions 2013 are David Alcaide (ESP), Line Kjoersvik (NOR) and Fred Dinsmore (IRL).

Alcaide terminated young Jim Chawki (SWE) with 8:4. Both players performed on a high level but it could be seen that Alcaide had much more experience on his side. Chawki played a great semi-final. He even managed to get a 3:1 lead over Alcaide. But then the tide turned in the match. Alcaide played much stronger and ran out 4 of his first 5 racks. That might have impressed Chawki. The Swede also scratched on his break shot two consecutive times in the 10th and 12th rack which probably broke his neck in this final match.

Alcaide punished his mistakes and jumped up when he pocketed the 8-ball to win the match with 8:4.

In the women's final, Kjoersvik showed no mercy with Marika Poikkijoki (FIN). Again, the Finish player could not win the event after eliminating Jasmin Ouschan out of the tournament. Maybe she had lost too much energy in the semi-final. Kjoersvik simply played stringer and deserved the victory with 6:1.

In the wheelchair division, all odd were on World Champion Henrik Larsson (SWE). But Dinsmore had other plans. He got an early lead with 3:1 and protected that until the end of the match.

Matches will start at 21:00 CET.

The event is hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) and organized by International Billiard Promotion (IBP). For further information and reference please go to the federation website www.epconline.eu or contact our press office.

Poikkijoki again prevailed over Ouschan

8-ball competition down to final matches

What an amazing match in the women's semifinal. Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) once more defeated Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) with 6:4. The story of the match is quickly told. Ouschan has made mistakes that could hardly be ever witnessed from her. Poikkijoki played strong and rock solid and punished Ouschan for every mistake she made. And there were many of them.

Ouschan even once missed the 8-ball and pocketed in a wrong pocket. She seemed to be completely off the roll. When being asked after the match whether she would be something like Ouschan's bogey opponent, Poikkijoki said: "Yea, I think I am in that role these days. It is the fourth time that I have beaten her. The difference between me and other players is that I punish her for the mistakes she makes while most others don't do that." Now Poikkijoki will play the final match with Line Kjoersvik (NOR) who eliminated Tamara Peeters-Rademakers (NED) with 6:3. Every time Poikkijoki was able to take out Ouschan from an event, she could never win the event but always had to settle for second place. Will be be able to change this today?

In another great and tight match, unheralded Jim Chawki (SWE) clearly prevailed over Niels Feijen (NED) with 8:5. The final matches in 8-ball will begin at 20:00 CET.

Lady Luck was not Austrian today

First rounds of 9-ball started

At the Dynamic Billard European Pool Championships in Portoroz, Slovenia, the first rounds of 9-ball competition have started today. In a one sided match, Serge Das (BEL) sent Erich Gruber (AUT) to the loser's side with 9:4.

Two things need to be said about that match. First, Das won rightfully. Second, Gruber had tough luck at times and then decided to fight himself rather than his opponent. In the early stage of the match, both players showed some nerves and missed several shots. At a score of 2:1 to Das, Gruber's misery started. Instead of making use of Das' miss, he snookered himself and had to play a jump shot which he obviously missed. That allowed Das to take a 3:1 lead. The next racks were pretty much determined by safety play were Gruber always ended up with the short end of the stick. Part of it was his own fault but sometimes he hit the edge of a pocket while trying to put the cue ball in a safe place and gave Das the option to run out. These little problems led to Das leading 6:3 after 9 racks. Then again, Gruber had the chance with his own break to close the gap a bit but he missed.

Das ran out and ran another rack to get on the hill with 8:3. Gruber won one more rack since he forced Das to commit a foul shot. But the match was finished by Das after the 13th rack with a clear 9:4 victory for Das.

Other notable results include David Zalman (CZE) unexpectedly winning with 9:8 over Artem Koshovyi (UKR). In an all Polish clash, Radoslaw Babica remained the upper hand over Tomasz Kaplan with 9:5.

Today will continue with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals in the 8-ball division. The quarter-finals begin at 15:00 CET.

The event is hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) and organized by International Billiard Promotion (IBP). For further information and reference please go to the federation website www.epconline.eu or contact our press office.
