Ramesh Gokhul celebrates with June Collins, visiting from Watford to support her friend.

Ramesh ‘Hustlin’ Gokhul back to winning ways

The 16th September was the date, St Albans Hurricane Room was the host and 10 ball was game as the Total9ball amateur event 2 took place. 26 participants started out with one thought in there minds… "Could I be the first player to become the Undefeated Champion" - winning all matches and scooping both the winner's and the runner's up prize money.

The draw was completed on the day, with such a strong field of players we had some cracking matches lined up. Ex tour player Dave McCarthy made his return to tournament play after two years away. It wasn’t the dream start however, as he was defeated 7-0 by Tom Staveley - would this set the trend for Dave's day?

Gary Bullocke, wearing the brightest multi-coloured jumper I have ever seen, continued his form of Event 1 with a convincing 7-1 over Larry Catapang, and Geoff Windeatt played some top pool, only dropping three racks against Andrew Carter.

Round One saw the clash of friends as Richard Main beat James Wagg 7-6, and travelling companions unfortunately drew each other as previous World English Pool Champion Oly Bale was on the right side of a 7v4 result against Gary Bullocke. There were other wins in round one from Chris Buckmaster 7-4, Gareth Esprit 7-6, Luke Rollison 7-3, Paul Summerfield 7-4, and Ramesh Gokhul 7-6 to name a few, but remember all players were in the 1st Round twice and therefore most players still had a chance of lifting the beautiful glass winner's trophy.

The biggest winning score in round 2 was 7-1 and there were three of these results, Andrew Carter beat Larry Catapang, Chris Buckmaster defeated Kris Kovacs and Luke Rollison cruised against Phil Wildman. Ramesh took out local talent Paul Summerfield 7-3 but did suffer a defeat by solid as ever Al Coton 7-4. Mark Parker nearly let a 6v2 lead slip against T9B Amateur series event one champion Luke Rollison but held his nerve at hill-hill and broke dished the deciding rack, a great win for Parker.

As we moved on to Round Three, 16 players remained and the tension in the Hurricane Room increased as only two players (Al Coton and Wayne Rooke) were still involved in both sides of the draw. Alan’s winning ways unfortunately came to an end in this round as he suffered two money match defeats 7-5 to Gary Bullocke and 7-6 Dave McCarthy, as Alan’s playing day was ended it was clear that Dave's form was picking up. Wayne Rooke managed to win one out of two matches in this round, impressively eliminating Luke Rollison 7-6, but was brought back to earth with a 7-3 loss dealt by experienced Gareth Esprit who was also making his return to tournament play after a lengthy break. Dave Knight from www.pro9.co.uk turned up on a surprise visit and took some photos, always great to have Mr Knight there in attendance.

The Quarter Final line up with results was as follows.

Ramesh Gokhul    7v3 Gareth Esprit
Gary Bullocke     7v6    Tom Staveley
Oly Bale             7v2    Chris Buckmaster
Dave Mccarthy     7v4 Wayne Rooke

So we were down to the final 4 four players, Ramesh was the only player remaining with T9B winning experience could it be his day again? Matches in the Semi Final and the Final remained a race to 7 plus any handicaps. Ramesh Gokhul hit top form in his Semi-Final match against Gary Bullocke, advancing 7-1, another good day's play from Gary reaching his second T9B Semi Final in as many tournaments.

The other Semi Final saw two new players to Total9ball, as Oly Bale showed his class can be transferred from the smaller English pool table to the larger American table, running out a 7-4 winner against Dave McCarthy. Dave's day began with a 7-0 defeat so to end up in the Semi Final was a great turn of form and achievement.

The camera was setup to record the Final and the stage was set for Gokhul vs Bale. Ramesh was racing to 8 and Oly was racing to 7. The match was very close all the way through with racks going one way and then the other, it was destined for a hill-hill final and that’s exactly what happened. There were a few misses by both players which showed they both really wanted to win, Ramesh got the first clear cut chance and was clinical, pocketing 9balls and the final 10 ball with a thin cut from mid table where the cue ball was a natural scratch, A great win for Ramesh, but also an excellent result for Oly in reaching the Final in his first T9B event.

Another superb event for all involved, run perfectly by T9B tournament director Nicole Hansen. Thanks to Hurricane Rooms St Albans for again playing brilliant hosts, to Dave Knight for making the trip to take some photos, video the final and chat with the players, and also to all the players who attended, continuing to show their support for Total9ball events,

T9B tournament director Nicole Hansen, with Phil Wildman.

Our next event will be held at St Albans on 13th Oct and will be a 9ball event again, scoring ranking points towards the Grand Final. Remember you score 5 points just for entering and 1 point per match won. The top 16 on the rankings after the 4 events will be invited to the Grand Final, the pot for which already contains £400. All results and updated ranking lists will be available by 8pm Sunday evening.
