10-ball competition found worthy winners
Monday, 30 July 2012: The 10-ball finals are over. The new European Champions are Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) in the girl’s division, Joshua Filler (GER) in the pupil’s division and Jose Alberto Delgado Hernandez (ESP) in the junior’s division.
The first final to finish was the pupil’s division. Only after about one hour of play, Joshua Filler pocketed his final 10-ball to defeat Andreas Madsen (DEN) clearly with 6:2. A loud scream came from Filler’s mouth when he realized that the winning ball would go in.
“I felt a huge load being taken off my mind”, said Filler after the match, “I really wanted that title. Eventually, after four times in the final, I think I deserved a title”. “I played a bit offhand in the beginning but then I was able to get back in the zone with my concentration”.
The junior’s final finished after the pupil’s. The tension in the junior’s final was very present. Tobias Bongers (GER) was leading 5:2 and 6:4 and he played solid and confident. But he should not have underestimated Delgado. The Spaniard approached Bongers rack after rack and tied the match at 6:6. The 13th rack was determined by safety play. In the end, Delgado had the better end and won the title.
In the girl’s division, Kamila Khodjaeva played Ana Gradisnik (SLO). Gradisnik is known to be a slow player and forced her game onto Khodjaeva. That worked in the beginning and Gradisnik was always in the lead and went on the hill first with 4:3. But Khodjaeva showed her full experience and was able to turn the tide in the match, winning 5:4 in the end.

Tomorrow, the matches will continue at 09:00 CET. The morning will feature 8-ball individuals. From 16:45 and onwards, the Team competition will resume.

Dramatic scenes in the semis
Monday, 30 July 2012: The final matches of the 10-ball competition are all set. After fierce fighting, the following pairings were determined:
Juniors:
Jose Alberto Delgado Hernandez (ESP v Tobias Bongers (GER)
Pupils:
Andreas Madsen (DEN) v Joshua Filler (GER)
Girls:
Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) v Ana Gradisnik (SLO)
Probably the most breath-taking semi-final was the match between Tobias Bongers and Moritz Lauwereyns (BEL). The start went better for Bongers. He went ahead 3:0 and Lauwereyns did not show too many signs of resistance then. But that changed. Lauwereyns grew stronger and won the next three racks, tying the match at 3:3. Then Bongers went ahead 4:3.
Lauwereyns countered and went ahead 5:4, being on the hill. And as no stage director could have written any better, of course everything lead to a 6:6 hill-hill situation between the two. In the 13th and final rack, the tension was even increased. Both players played very careful and Lauwereyns had Bongers on three fouls and played a good safety shot. But Bongers hit the ball with a jump-shot and left a shot for Lauwereyns. The Belgian ran ball after ball but played the cue ball a bit too fast when positioning for the 10-ball. What a thriller! He aimed at the tough but makeable final 10-ball… and missed it!
Bongers went to the table and took the match away from a completely frustrated Lauwereyns with 7:6.

8-ball competition started
Monday, 30 July 2012: Today, the 8-ball competition has started at the Dynamic Billiards European Youth Championships in Brandenburg a. d. Havel, Germany. All day will see 8-ball individual matches until 16:30 when the quarterfinals in 10-ball will commence.
In the girl’s division, the current World 9-ball Champion Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) had to deal with Germany’s Veronika Ivanovskaia. The match turned out to be one sided with Czuprynska winning 5:1 over Ivanovskaia.
It was Czuprynska’s match from start to finish. She played solid and did not make many mistakes. However, one would have expected more from Ivanovskaia. She has also had some good and strong performances this week so the expectations in that match were quite high. But it turned out to be a one “girl” show… Czuprynska won the first racks and took a quick 2:0 lead. Ivanovskaia should have taken the 3rd rack to open her account for the match but she played a very bad position for the 8-ball. She had to try and bank the 8-ball into the side pocket but she failed. Czuprynska said “thank you” and won the rack, making the score 3:0 in a race to five. Ivanovskaia slowly struggled for air. But the Polish World Champion did not show any impression at all. She continued with her solid performance and went on the hill with 4:0. There, Ivanovskaia demonstrated that she is also capable to play at a high level. She won the rack. Was that the start of her comeback? Not at all. Czuprynska took the next rack as well and won the match with a strong performance with 5:1.
Other notable results from today’s 8-ball competition include Tobias Bongers (GER) winning by a whisker over Vladislav Zaborovskii (RUS) with 7:6 in the junior’s division. Newly crowned straight pool European Champion Finn Eschment (GER) handed a doughnut to Jeremy Berardi (LUX) and won with 7:0. Jose Alberto Delgado Hernandez (ESP) sent Jan Henrik Wolf (GER) to the loser’s side with 7:3. In the winner’s qualification round, Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) defeated Alvaro Blasco (ESP) in a heartbreaker with 7:6.
Competition will continue with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals of the 10-ball.

Russian and German teams on track
Sunday, 29 July 2012: The defending European Champion, the strong Polish junior team, consisting of Wojciech Szewczyk, Marcel Fortunski and Adrian Borowiec had no chance against the juniors from Team Russia and lost 0:3.
The Russian Teams were as expected both very strong and can be considered favourites in this year’s youth European Championships. The juniors have crushed team Poland with 3:0,
leaving not many chances for the Polish lads. In the pupil’s division, the Russians were victorious over Team North Cyprus with 2:0.
Just as the Russian teams, Germany has two teams that both can be counted in when it comes to favourites for the title. In the junior’s division, Germany defeated Spain 3:0 and will proceed to the winner’s qualification round. In the pupil’s division, Germany left no chance for the tough Austrians and sent them to the left side of the draw.
Poland’s pupils are still on track after a 3:0 victory over Bulgaria; the Dutch Team is not so successful in the moment. The juniors have lost 1:2 to Norway while the pupils have lost their opener against Austria, also with 2:1.
Since we are in the early stage of the team event in both divisions, junior’s and pupil’s, no team has been eliminated yet. There is still a chance for every nation which is participating to claim a title in one of the team events.

First team matches brought close results
Sunday, 29 July 2012: Starting today, the team competition will be played almost every day besides the individual matches.
The first round of junior’s team matches showed some clear
and some close results. Team Russia won expectedly clear with 3:0 over Team Sweden. Andrey Seroshtan won 100:39 in straight pool over Daniel Tangudd. Vitaly Pavlukhin creamed Tian Zhang in 9-ball with 8:3, and Vladislav Zaborovskii won the 8-ball match with 7:6 over Christian Fischer.
More exciting was the team encounter in the pupil’s division between Team Netherlands and Team Austria. Austria won with 2:1 but the match was fiercely contested. Daniel Guttenberger got the opening point for Austria with his 7:3 victory in 9-ball over Sahin Sayim. A little bit later, Jan van Lierop won the straight pool match with 75:11 over Moritz Engl and tied the match at 1:1. The decision had to come from the 8-ball match between Cyriel Ledoux and Manuel Kapeller. Ledoux was up 4:2 and 5:4 over Kapeller but could not keep his nerves together to close the book on the match. He missed important shots and allowed Kapeller to stay in the match. At 5:5, Kapeller shot great pool and won the deciding rack, winning the 8-ball 6:5 and the team match with 2:1.

Last year’s runner-up made her way through the loser’s side
Sunday, 29 July 2012: After some early problems, Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) defeated Marion Winkler (AUT) clearly with 5:3.
Seroshtan was the runner-up in last year’s 10-ball competition. She definitely was the favourite player, but she got off to a nightmare start into this year’s competition. She lost her first round match against Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) and made her way through the loser’s round to play in this qualification match now. Winkler had the better start. She took the first two racks off Seroshtan. Winkler could have even gotten a 3:0 lead over Seroshtan if she would not have missed the 9-ball in the 3rd rack. However, Seroshtan opened her account and turned the scoreboard to 1:2. Then she took a time-out. She came back to the match and played better, gaining a 3:2 advantage over Winkler. The Austrian girl obviously needed a time-out herself now which she took. But the success was not as good as it was with Seroshtan who won another rack, making the score 4:2. In the 7th rack, Seroshtan should have closed the book on that match but she missed the 10-ball twice. Winkler used her second chance and closed the gap a bit, trailing 3:4. But the next rack saw the end of that match. Seroshtan played better and won deservedly 5:3.
She will now be drawn into the single elimination field of the final eight players. Marion Winkler will have to settle for 5th place.
Another interesting match in the girl’s division was the encounter between Ana Gradisnik (SLO) and Nathalie Seichter (NED). Gradisnik also came through the complete loser’s round while Seichter lost in the winner’s qualification round. However, a few unlucky rolls and good potting from Gradisnik seemed to get Seichter off her rhythm. Trailing 1:2, Seichter had the chance to tie the match at 2:2 but she could not pocket the 10-ball. That was the key situation in that match.
Gradisnik did not play very well regarding the positional play but she pocketed even the tough shots. Seichter had no opposition to offer to Gradisnik anymore. The Slovenian girl won the match with 5:1.
Other notable results include Finn Eschment (GER), newly crowned straight pool champion, losing his first round match to Marcel Fortunski (POL) with 5:7. Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) was defeated by Pia Blaeser (GER) with 5:3. Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) remained the upper hand over Vitaly Pavlukhin (RUS) with 7:5.
