Chris Melling finally stamps his name into 9 ball history
It's been a long time coming for those of us who have admired his playing style and pace on the big ball table for nearly a decade, but at long last Chris "The Magician" Melling has received the official recognition of the ability that he has always possessed, with the winner's trophy at the Portugal Euro Tour event in Albufeira.
The Dynamic Portugal Open Champion certainly didn't have an easy run through the field as he faced champion after champion with the likes of Germany's Christian Reimering and Oliver Ortmann, both previous Euro Tour champions, obstructing his route to the trophy. But beat them he did, along with a strong performance over Poland's very capable Karol Skowerski in the semi-finals. That 9-1 victory and a break between that and the final match may have helped the WEPF World 8-ball Champion to push through Spain's very talented Carlos Cabello in the final.
Melling's good natured attitude and approachable demeanour means everyone has a bit of a soft spot for him, and this victory will be welcomed with open arms back in England!

A new venue for EPBF Euro Tour players
Portugal has provided an exciting new venue for the Euro Tour players - who won't be shy about taking advantage of the facilities on offer... The word "golf" has been mentioned on more than one occasion and there's talk of players bringing their clubs to Portugal along with their cues!
It's not cheap to play on the Euro Tour - but the 40/50,000 prize money on offer at each event is always very tempting, and the playing conditions are often regarded as second to none. Players pay between 140 and 175 entry fee per event depending on different discount levels available for early payments, rooms cost between 50 and 85 per night, those willing to share get the cheaper rate. Then there are flights from all over Europe and general travel/living expenses for four days to add to that - but still they come!
Why, well apart from the previously mentioned advantages, the ranking points awarded also carry a lot of weight, as they are used to seed European players for automatic free entry into other major tournaments like the Mosconi Cup, World Pool Masters and World Championships.
We'd like to wish good luck all to the players making the trip to Portugal, let's hope it's worthwhile trip and another Pro9'er gets a stupendous victory to end the year with a smile on his face and some cash in his pocket.
