Easy afternoon for Germany, Canada and the Swiss

THERE were comfortable wins for Germany, Canada and Switzerland at the 2014 Betway World Cup of Pool as the opening session of day three unwound at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth. There is just one more round one game remaining as India and England B slug it out in the opening game of Thursday evening.

In the opening game, 2011 champions Germany – Thorsten Hohmann and Ralf Souquet – had too much for Malaysia, represented by Alan Tan and Ibrahim Amir, as they coasted to a 7-1 victory.

“We’re obviously very happy with the result and the performance,” said a delighted Hohmann.

“I missed a bank shot in the first rack but after that we didn’t make too many mistakes. We got a little fortunate getting balls after the break, that is very important and we were able to string a few racks together so that helped our confidence.

“We are still trying to figure out the speed of the table but I think this match will set us up positively for the rest of the tournament,” he added.

His partner Souquet said, “The break is huge. We were a little fortunate after the breaks to get a shot on the lowest ball, and twice it was tight but we were able to get out and string three or four racks together and that was key.”

Dutch, US & England A go through

THREE of the big guns of the sport enjoyed victories at the Betway World Cup of Pool as the first round continued at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth. Holland, USA and England A all had wins and will take their place in the second round.

Home team England A – Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes – had a huge scare as they nearly succumbed to Spain, scraping through in the deciding rack of the match. Spain had taken a 5-3 lead in front of a lively crowd but the English levelled it at 5-5.

Francisco Diaz for Spain, though, played a daring 4/9 combination which put the Spaniards on the hill. His partner David Alcaide just couldn’t get the requisite number of balls over the head string and control of the table passed back to the English. It was a lifeline that they gratefully accepted to level the match at 6-6.

An inconclusive break from Appleton saw Spain back to the table for a push out. Both teams had visits before Boyes missed a bank on the 2 ball to give Spain a great chance. Alcaide though, failed to pot the 4 ball and with the balls lying invitingly on the table, the English pair cleared to take a nervy win.

Super Qatar topple Taiwan!

QATAR upset the applecart at the 2014 Betway World Cup of Pool as they turned over the highly fancied Chinese Taipei pairing of Chang Yu-lung & Hsu Kai-lun to take their nation through to the second round for the first time in the event’s nine year history.

Taking place at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth, the Betway World Cup of Pool features 32 two-man teams from around the world vying for a $250,000 prize fund, and it was Qatar who still has their eyes on the prize following an exciting 7-5 win.

The Middle Eastern country had played in the event from its inception in 2006 until 2010, having failed to win a game but pool in Qatar has made significant progress in recent years. The pairing of newcomer Waleed Majid and veteran Bashar Hussain shed any nerves as they moved into a 2-0 lead.

That lead became 5-2 before the Chinese Taipei pair steadied the ship as they won two racks to reduce the deficit to 5-4. Waleed bagged the 9 ball to put his side on the hill, and although Chinese Taipei grabbed one back, some superior shot-making in the 12th rack sealed a historic win for Qatar.

Commented Waleed, “We are so happy to win; we were delighted just to be at the Betway World Cup of Pool. Today we played against a strong team, one of the top five in the world. We’re hoping to make a name for Qatar in world pool.

“If you break and you get a good spread you can win the racks and in the short format you can win any match. It was great to play with Bashar - he is a very, very good player with lots of experience and we make a good partnership. We enjoy playing together and as the tournament goes on hopefully as a pairing we can get better.”

Philippines hold off battling Chile

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS the Philippines got their 2014 Betway World Cup of Pool campaign underway successfully as they edged past a gutsy Chile side that had started out as huge underdogs but almost managed to silence a big Filipino contingent at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.

7-5 was the final score but there was plenty of heart shown by the South American side consisting of Alejandro Carvajal and Enrique Rojas. The pair had endured a tortuous journey that had taken them from Santiago to Sao Paolo, across to Paris and then onto London and then Portsmouth. It didn’t help that there was a lengthy delay in Brazil factored into the itinerary and at the end of that trek were reigning champs Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza

They stayed with their more illustrious opponents in the early stages and the Chilean pair took the fifth rack and they completed it with a fluked 9 ball. Carvajal though, immediately lost momentum as he followed the 1 ball into the side pocket with the white to give ball in hand to the Philippines. That took the score to 4-2 and the Filipinos took the next to give themselves some breathing space.

However, the game South Americans were not finished as they recovered to take the next and then a break and run took the score to 4-5 to the Asian pair.

They both had visits in the tenth game and it was the Philippines who took it, but they lost the table in the next as Chile completed a nervy run out to stay in the match. However, a cruel kick on the cue ball from the blue 2 on Rojas’ break shot ended South American hopes as Orcollo and Corteza ran out to take the match.

“Race to seven is very short and we struggled in the beginning. We didn’t get nice breaks and had two scratches and a dry break,” said Orcollo.

“It feels like playing at home because of the support from the Filipino community here in England. This event is very special for us and we really wanted to come through the first round,” he added.

Day one wins for Greece, France and Austria

THE NINTH ANNUAL Betway World Cup of Pool got underway this afternoon at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth and there were wins for Greece, France and Austria as the first session of the $250,000 event unfolded.

The opening match went down to the decider as both Indonesia and Greece had periods in the ascendancy. In the end it was a glaring miss on a routine 5 ball by Muhammad Zulfikri which effectively handed the rack and the match to the Greek pairing of Nik Ekonomopoulus and Alex Kazakis.

Unstoppable Wildman completes the double at High Wycombe

Total9Ball organised a very last minute competition held at the beautiful High Wycombe Hurricane Room. This club was chosen as the venue because just days ago they replaced all cushions and cloths on every American table therefore playing conditions were perfect.

T9B managed to attract an impressive 17 players with just 24 hours notice which was brilliant. The event was run to the T9B two times format with a new addition of the blind scotch doubles and the always popular break dish as side events.

Matches began at 11am and first up was the blind scotch 9ball event. Players were drawn with a random partner for each round. The feedback from this event was fantastic. T9B thought this side event would be a great new addition as anybody can win and also it's a great opportunity to make new friends and chat with players who you perhaps haven't spoken to before. The final was contested between Apostalis Harmas, Ashik Nathwani, Brian 'The Side-Event Specialist' Cassidy and local talent Dale Cadet. The draw was made and it paired Ashik with Brian against Apostalis and Dale. It was the team of Ashik and Brian who went on to become the first ever T9B Blind Scotch Doubles Champions collecting a trophy and £40 each for their troubles while Apostalis and Dale collecting £20 each.

Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

Allison Fisher joins the OB Pro Team of Players

Hall of Fame player Allison Fisher and cutting edge Texas based billiard manufacturer OB Cues proudly announce the signing of Allison to the OB Pro Team of Players.

“As a fan of pool, I have always admired Allison’s game but how she conducts herself away from the table is equally as impressive” said Royce Bunnell, President of OB.

“I am proud to have accomplished what I have so far in both snooker and pool but I am not done yet! I love my OB equipment and truly believe that the consistency and accuracy of my equipment will play a big part in my future success on the table” said Allison Fisher.

“Allison is quite simply a living legend in the world of pool. Her tournament success is unequaled and she has a fan base that is unmatched. Having Allison join our team and trust her game to OB products is a great honor” said Shane Sinnott, Director of Sales and Marketing for OB.

Allison can be seen competing on ESPN and on International television networks on a regular basis. She also has been known to stop by the OB booth to sign autographs, take pictures and play challenge games with fans and will continue to do so whenever possible.

Estonians dominate at home

This weekend Baltic Pool League made its way to Tallinn, Estonia. The venue was yet again the beautiful Baribal Pool Club. Men division was dominated by Estonians with Denis Grabe winning the event and women and oldboys division ended with a win for Latvias Anna Prisjaźnuka.

Estonians were not very hospitable

In men division Estonians showed some bad hospitality by taking three out of four possible medals. In the first semi final Denis Grabe nearly escaped a loss from his good friend and training partner Raimo Teesaar. The match looked all secure for Grabe as he went to a 7:4 lead, but Teesaar had other plans and made his way up to 7:7. However two times Eurotour winner Grabe showed his composure and made the best of the final rack.

The second semi final was all about Rafig Adigazalov (EST) junior. He left the only foreigner left in the field, Marius Ganusauskas (LIT), with a donut.

The all Estonian final did not provide any upsets for the hot favourite Grabe as he cruised to a comfortable 8:4 victory. It must be stated that it seems to be a custom that the winner of the men event does not lose a match.

Regardless of the Estonians home success Domas Mineikis from Lithuania tops the overall ranking and second and third place is tied by Marius Ganusauskas and Latvian Pateris Ermansons.
