The Netherlands' Niels Feijen wins the 2014 World 9-ball Championship with a hard fought 13-10 win over Austria's Albin Ouschan

Finally, Niels Feijen snapped off the big one. And fittingly he did it in typical Niels Feijen style.

Putting in a career defining workman-like performance, the Dutch veteran, for years known as one of pool’s hardest workers, used every single tool in his vast arsenal, and grinded his way to a hard earned 13-10 victory over Austria’s Albin Ouschan to win the 2014 World 9-ball Championship at the Al Saad Sports Club in Doha.

The victory was Feijen’s first ever World 9-ball Championship and came 15 years after he first turned pro. Along the way the Dutchman has consistently played at the highest levels of the sport, winning tournaments and accolades around the globe. But he’s also had his share of near misses and bitter disappointments, most notably two straight finals losses at the World 8-ball Championship in 2010 and 2011, the former a hill-hill barn burner.

Feijen’s also had to deal with talk from some pool circles over the last few years that perhaps that he might never win the big one, and that he would be forever known as a great player who failed to reach the super elite. But as has been typical of his style for years, the 37 year old Feijen kept his nose to the grindstone, working hard on his game, adding missing details like a tactical game, psychology, and perhaps most importantly a family life with his wife and young daughter.

Taiwan's Chang, Austria's Ouschan, the Netherland's Feijen, and the Philippines' Haya storm into the semi-finals of the 2014 World 9-ball Championship in Doha

After a marathon day of pressure packed championship pool played at the highest levels, Taiwan’s Chang Yu Lung, the Netherlands Niels Feijen, Austria’s Albin Ouschan, and the Philippines Elmer D. Haya all barged into the semi-finals of the 2014 World 9-ball Championship in Doha.

Both semi-finals feature east vs. west scenarios. In one race to eleven, alternate break match, Chang will lock horns with Albin Ouschan. In the other semi, which will be played concurrently, Feijen will do battle with Haya. Both matches will begin at 1:30pm Doha time(GMT +3). The final will be a race to 13, alternate break and will begin at 5pm.

After the surprise elimination of six world champions, along with several other big names the day before in the round of 64, the race to pool’s crowning glory began the day perhaps more wide open than it has been in years. With the field being whittled down from 32 to just four all in one day, the scenarios and possibilities ranged wildly; would an improbable name emerge to suddenly snatch the crown? Or would a familiar name step up to make sure everything remained as it should be in the pool universe.

In the end, after nearly 12 hours of drama, action, crushing pressure and amazing perseverance, we ended up with a little bit of both.

LOCOMOTIVE CRUISES TO MAIDEN NORTHERN MASTERS TITLE

The 2014 GB9 Northern Masters has reached its conclusion with Phil Burford, Mark Lunn and David Hopkin reigning supreme at the De Vere Village Hotel in Blackpool.

The final of this year’s Northern Masters was contested by two professional opting not to participate in the World Championship in Qatar, those being Mark Gray and Phil Burford. Both players had contested main event finals already this season, with Gray victorious in May’s Paul Medati Trophy and Burford the losing finalist in the season opening Midlands Classic.

‘Granite’ Gray came up against and defeated Adam Clarke 9 racks to 5 in his opening match as he started plotting his route to the final. His round 2 match saw him come up against Dave Simmonds, but he had no answer to Gray’s questions and succumbed to a 9-3 defeat. Gray needed one more victory to reach the single elimination last 16 stage, and it was Andy Worthington who stood between him and that spot. It was another 9-3 score here, and once again a score in Gray’s favour. The next man standing in his way was . He hoped his unbeaten Challenge Cup record coming into this event would serve him well here, but a 9-6 win to Gray suggested otherwise. His opponent was Sam Hirst, playing in his first GB9 event of the season. Gray turned on the juice here to secure his spot in the semi-finals, and a 9-2 win saw him through to face Ipswich’s Craig Osborne in the final four. Osborne too had no response to Gray’s prowess, and a second straight 9-2 win ensured safe passage into his second successive final.

Shock upsets send the big boys packing as the field at the 2014 World 9-ball Championship gets down to the final 32

Pool’s next generation of superstars took a giant leap towards claiming their place in the sun today, producing a slew of shocking and unexpected results as the field at the 2014 World 9-ball Championship was cut in half from 64 players down to 32.

It was an extraordinary day given over to unknown upstarts, newcomers, fearless young guns, and a few wily but unheralded veterans, all of whom seemed to collectively state to pool’s elite that it was time for some new and different names to grab the headlines for a change.

So how bad was it for pool’s biggest names? Well, here’s a statistic that could come straight from the crime blotter; five former world 9-ball champions, and the defending champion Thorsten Hohmann all went down to defeat. Heavy favorites like the Philippines’ Dennis Orcollo and Lee Van Corteza also were sent home.

The remaining field still comprises two former world champions, and plenty of pool’s top ranked players. And when they set off tomorrow with all these fresh faces in the mix, the results are likely to remembered for some time to come. That’s because Thursday’s breakneck schedule will see the remaining 32 players whittled down to just four by the end of the day. The semi-finals and finals will them be contested on Friday.

Another 32 players battle through Judgement Day nerves and tension to grab a spot in the Final 64 as the real race for World 9-ball supremacy begins

With plenty of cueing arms shaking, nerves frazzling, and careers hanging in the balance, 32 players kept their hopes and dreams for 9-ball magnificence alive today, as the field for the Final 64 at the 2014 World 9-ball Championship finally took shape at the Al Saad Sports Club in Doha.

The race to pool’s most prestigious prize now takes on a completely different complexion beginning Wednesday, as all matches become do or die single elimination contests. The action and drama is guaranteed to heat up as the tournament will reach its sure-to-be explosive conclusion in just three days. All matches down to the final are race to 11, alternate break. The Finals, which will be played just after the completion of the semis on Friday, will be a race to 13, alternate break.

Even a passing glance at the Final 64 bracket is enough to make the most jaded pool fan stand up and take notice. Many of the big names from the sport who came to Doha have made it through. The field also comprises a host of up-and-coming sharp shooters who have a solid chance at becoming the sport’s next superstar. There are also dark horses aplenty who could upset the apple cart. Even a bunch of newcomers from countries not normally associated with pool made it through, and these players too could very well make some noise.

Darren Appleton, Mika Immonen and Thorsten Hohmann get taken to the limit before advancing to the Final 64 of the 2014 World 9-ball Championship in Doha.

For Darren Appleton, the plan today was simple. Quietly take care of business against Taiwan teenager Lin Cheng Chieh in their race to 9 match, and ensure a spot in the Final 64 knockout stage of the 2014 World 9-ball Championship, which begins here in Doha on Wednesday morning. That’s the money rounds, where guys of Appleton’s world class level make it all happen, where his run to a second World 9-ball championship would begin. The group stage? Well, that’s nothing more than a potential morass, a necessary evil where you try to get out of with your two wins as quickly as possible.

But right from the very beginning today nothing went Appleton’s way. The mop-top teen couldn’t miss and the Englishman quickly found himself down 7-1, a near impossible gap to overcome in an alternate break match. As he watched his plan fall apart, Appleton dejectedly knew he would have to come back tomorrow for another group stage match, one that could potentially dash all his high hopes for greatness this year.

But then slowly and surely, the 2012 World 9-ball champion clawed his way back. He soon narrowed the gap to two, then tied it at 7, as Lin wilted under serious heat from one of the world’s top pool players. Eventually the match went to the cliff with Appleton outfoxing the lad at the wire, 9-8.

Instead of the dreaded Judgement Day match in the group stage tomorrow, Appleton had made it through to the Final 64. As he packed up his cue, the change in his demeanor was priceless. 40 minutes earlier he cut a lonely, depressed figure in his chair. Now he was jacked to the gills, as if he’d been struck by an energizing bolt of lightning.

“The first part of the match he played unbelievable, perfect pool,” Appleton said. “I’m already thinking about how I’m going to go practice my break later for tomorrow’s match because I’m sure I’m going to lose this one. But when I got it back to 7-5 I just started grinding it out. The last rack was serious pressure and my arm was shaking. Now I’m in the last 64, I’m in the money rounds. This is when it all starts. This makes me a dangerous player now because winning this match in the way I did is a big confidence boost.”

Losers shown no mercy as 32 players head for the exits on Day 2 at the 2014 World 9-Ball Championship in Doha

Most of Day 2 at the 2014 World 9-ball Championship was given over to the losers. That is, the players who lost their first match in the group stage, and would get one more chance in this double elimination format to get back on track for the knockout rounds, or face the ignominy of complete and utter failure on pool’s biggest stage.

Going two losses and out in the World 9-ball Championship is about as bad as it gets for a professional pool player. For the lesser players who never had a real chance in the first place, it only confirms their lowly place in the pecking order of what is already one of this planet’s toughest grinds of a sport.

But it’s the top guys you have to really feel for. This is a sport that already rubs it in on a daily basis, what with little prize money compared to other major sports, grudging sponsors, and competition for what is on offer as fierce as the June midday sun in Doha. Two losses right off the get-go at this event means you not only go home thousands of dollars in the hole, but you also start questioning your very existence as a pro, even as a person. Yes, total failure here for the big boys can really, really sting.

Take 2007 World 9-ball Champion Daryl Peach. After losing handily on day 1 to the Czech Republic’s Roman Hybler, he drew Hungary’s very capable Vilmos Foldes today in a sink or swim match that would see one of these top players pack his bags just as things were getting going, while the other would get one more chance at the money rounds later this week. This was as solid a pairing as you could see at the Al Saad Sports Club this week. When Peach won the title in Manila in 2007, he defeated Foldes in the semi-finals. Foldes has reached the semis twice in this event.

Phil Burford continues his phenomenal streak on the GB 9 Ball Tour.

Photos arrive from Blackpool

This is the first time I've been to Blackpool, so I make no apologies for adding some pictures of the scenery along the seafront and the hotel surroundings, along with the more standard selection of action shots from the stunning venue here at the Heron's Reach.

Absolutely all the players seemed to love this venue more than any other we have attended this season, the surrounding are just sublime, the golf course, the Stanley Park opposite the hotel, the warm sunshine and cold beer just making the whole visit quite delightful.

You can see the full results from this event at the official GB9 website (the link to click is above) but suffice to say that Phil Burford has further improved his run of success on the tour once again.

See you all at the next event on the 1st of August when we return to the now familiar surroundings of the Daventry Court Hotel.

The Philippines' Dennis Orcollo barely survives an early test as most favorites win on Day 1 at the 2014 World 9-ball Championship.

Long time followers of the WPA World 9-ball Championship know that the event is always full of surprises. The upstarts, the unknowns, the unexpected seem to make a splash in each and every edition of pool’s crowning glory.

As this slowly building drama begins to rise towards a guaranteed thunderous climax six days from now, fans already know the upsets and shocks are going to start mounting. But while the newbies and nobody’s of pool will definitely make their noise, even more true is that good old fashioned sporting standards like experience, possessing a history of winning and performing under crushing pressure are generally going to carry the day.

As day one of the 2014 World 9-ball Championship commenced in this fabulously wealthy desert kingdom this most valuable of athletic tenants carried the storyline in one of the day’s better matches. The Philippines’ Dennis Orcollo would be among any betting man or woman’s top contenders out of the field of 128 players entered here in Doha. But in his first match in the group stage he drew a very difficult opponent in Canada’s Jason Klatt.

Down 6-4, then 8-6 in the race to 9 match, and clearly struggling to find his normally sensational groove, Orcollo was staring at the prospect of a long and arduous road back to reach the final 64. But then, in that manner that champions always put forth, the Filipino star managed to claw back and claim a very hard fought and nervy victory, 9-8. Afterward, Orcollo admitted he was slow to get a feel for the brand new Wiraka table. But he also admitted he’s been around long enough to know what to do when things don’t go your way.

“I felt uncomfortable with the table,” Orcollo said. “I struggled but I didn’t give up. You know I have a lot of experience. And I know that with pressure comes negative thoughts. It’s going to happen in pool. There’s nothing you can do about it. I just try to calm down and stay focused, stay positive and that’s what I did today.”
