The 8 Ball tournament in Seville this weekend for which nearly 100 players turned up, was won by Swedish visitor Marcus Chamat.

Chamat surprised everyone by turning up for this tournament but surprised nobody by his superior play. He ploughed through the field effortlessly as far as the quarter finals where he met local hero David "Pumita" Lopez.

This was one of the games of the tournament and Lopez had the measure of Chamat throughout but a couple of dry breaks were his downfall and Chamat took advantage at 6-6 and won the two racks necessary to get himself into the semi final.

Previously another visitor, Fabio Petroni, had to give way to the young David Lopez in the last sixteen losing by 8 racks to 4.

Yet another visitor, this time from England, Richard Lacey who at one time had lived in Spain and was the equal in his day of players like Alcaide, Cabello and Tapies etc. showed that he can still play a bit.

Matched up against current Spanish 9 Ball Champion and Junior Bronze Medalist in the European Championships Francisco Sanchez, Richard showed all his experience winning 8 - 4 in the first round of straight knockout and went into the last 16 where he was to meet the father of the young Sanchez. This also went the way of the Englishman but the next round was to be his last. In the quarter final Francisco "Paquito" Diaz would have none of it and made short work of demolishing Lacey with an 8-0 victory.

At the bottom half of the draw, things were much easier with only a couple of players expected to do well. Daniel Gaspar, previous Spanish 8 Ball Champion looked to have an easy path through to the finals but stumbled a couple of times and eventually succumbed in the quarter final to Sergio Cruz from Malaga who took the match with a 8-7 victory.

The first semi final between Diaz and Chamat promised to see the eventual winner of the tournament and Chamat playing his best 8 Ball gave a lesson to the fancied Spanish player. Paquito, known as the Tornado wasn�t given any chances and Marcus showed hi undoubted class and with a score line of 8-2, found himself in the final.

The other semi final between Sergio Cruz and local player Isidro Urena was a much closer affair but eventually the player from Malaga upset the crowd by taking out the last Seville hopeful by 8 racks to 6.

The final was a one sided match, Cruz shouldn�t have turned up for this one, his nerves got the better of him and playing against a legend proved to be too much. On the few times that he went to the table, he missed easy shots that he would never have normally missed and gave Marcus an easy 8-0 victory.

However, Cruz picked up a loser�s check of 1500 euros which in these days of crisis and after having recently been laid off, was very welcome.

Chamat for his part took home 3000 euros which he will no doubt be using next week in some of the money games that will be going on in Louisville, Kentucky at the Derby City Classic.

Some of Spain�s top players were involved in another tournament in Granada which unfortunately clashed with the Seville event but that didn�t detract as there were a lot of classy players in both events.
