Finalists Phil Burford and Chris Melling shake hands before the final at Barnsley

The Locomotive steams home from Barnsley with the trophy as passenger

Phil "The Locomotive" Burford, the former Under 18 Junior UK Champion, has won The Barnsley Nine Ball Open with a stunning 10-9 victory over the two-time English 8-Ball World Champion Chris Melling.

The youngster from Darlington appeared to tear through the single elimination stages of the event with a very strong performance producing some very one-sided results in his favour, but without doubt the toughest match was the final, going to a tense hill-hill deciding rack.

The Barnsley Open isn't just about the main event though, as Friday night saw a Challenge Match between Richard "Indiana" Jones and Darren "Dynamite" Appleton - the second leg of the challenge that started with a win by Jones at Mickey Flynns, his home club in Cambridge.

This time the match went to Appleton, leading most of the way despite a strong mid-match rally by Jones which saw him level the scores at 11-11. The final score, a dominating 21-15 win for the Yorkshireman saw calls for a "decider" to be played at Cambridge!

Finally, one of the most fun challenges at this event, the fantastic speed-pool tournament. Two tables set side-by-side, and players have to clear the table faster than their opponent on the next table. It's great fun to watch, and now, Craig Dixon knows what it's like to win it too!
