2007 World 14.1 Straight Pool Championship Groups

Players were seeded according to last year's placement as well as country ranking and federation rankings. Players from the same country were also divided into separate groups.

This first round robin stage will be races to 100 points and take place July 9-11. The top 4 finishers in each group will advance to the 32 man board.

Parsippany, NJ- Dragon Promotions is pleased to announce Comet Billiards as the newest sponsor of the Predator World Straight Pool Championships. The World 14.1 event has thrived and grown because of the base supporters the game has. Comet Billiards, and its owner Bill Haley, has joined an elite group of patrons such as Randy Goldwater, Joel Schapiro, Predator Cues, Diamond Tables, Simonis Cloth, Master Chalk, and Aramith Balls.

"We really rely on the committment of people that love the game of straight pool, " admits Charlie Williams, Co-Promoter of the event, "People like Bill Haley, Randy Goldwater, and Joel Schapiro keep this game alive. The World Straight Pool Championship could only thrive in a place like the New Jersey/New York area and it needs a strong,local poolroom to help promote the event as well as assist in various needs of the event. Comet Billiards is a perfect fit and Bill Haley is a great ambassador of not only just 14.1, but pool in general."

"I agree that Comet Billiards being a part of this event directly is a great match. We have such a strong following of straight pool fans in my room. I would do anything for the sake of promoting straight pool." said Bill Haley, who will also be volunteering to referee matches during the event.

Comet Billiards is an up-scale billiards room that opened its doors in May 2001 and was voted one of the Top 10 New Rooms by Billiards Digest. Comet hosts many regional tournaments as well as its own events. Comet Billiards also has a thriving weekly Straight Pool League. Comet is located in Parsippany, New Jersey.

Next year Comet will tentatively plan to have the Official Players Meeting for the World Straight Pool Championship , as well as a Charity Event,and Exhibition 14.1 Challenge Match the night before the main event starts.

Diamond Official Table of Predator World 14.1 Championship

Billiard News - Diamond Tables will be the battlefield where the 2007 World Straight Pool Champion will be decided on. Players will be playing on the well reputed pristine and challenging tables. Simonis 860 Cloth and Super Aramith TV Balls will be the Official Cloth and Official Balls used during the prestigious event.

Since its inception, the Diamond Professional has been used in over 100 major tournaments.

"We are very proud to be the Official Table for the World Straight Pool Championships. Learning 14.1 is instrumental in becoming a great all around player and mastering the pool table. This is the first time in history where standardized equipment will be used for professional 14.1, and a great measuring stick for future straight pool records." said Greg Sullivan, Founder of Diamond Billiard Products.
"You're going to have to be able to really play on this equipment. If you polish and wax the balls and keep the tables clean, the Diamonds will play great." says John Schmidt referring to ability of high runs during the event. Schmidt, a 400 ball runner, is considered by many as USA's best hope of getting the World 14.1 Title back.

Sullivan will be awarding a bonus of $1000 to the first player to run 200 balls during the event. Dragon Promotions has an anonymous patron who will also pay an additional bonus of $3000 to the player with the highest run of the event.

"I'm pretty new to straight pool, but I played just enough to know the tables will be a big factor in the event. Bottom line is the better players are going to be a bigger favorite because of the accuracy you need along with cue ball control. But high runs are more than possible as proved this past January at the Derby. Souquet, Archer, Davis, and Immonen all had 120's -160's. Danny Harriman said if you run 150 on the Diamonds, that's like running 200 on another table. I believe him." said Charlie Williams. Williams finished 9th in last year's World 14.1 and 3rd at the Derby City 14.1 event.

"These are no buckets. Better be able to shoot straight." warned Mika Immonen. Mika won the Derby City Classic 14.1 Event and ran the high run of 160 on the Diamond Tables. The World Record during World 14.1 Championship play was set last year by Thorsten Hohmann's 174 run.

In 1987, Diamond Tables was formed from a group of dedicated pool players in Louisville, Kentucky based on a simple but unique idea of creating a table that would so surpass all others in quality and craftsmanship that it would become the standard for national and international tournament play. Since its inception, the Diamond Professional has been used in over 100 major tournaments. High Run Awards

For the second year in a row, The World 14.1 Championships will be paying out cash prizes for the high run of the event. Last year $1000 was awarded to Thorsten Hohmann for his run of 174 which also set the World Record in World Championship play. This year, $5000 will be paid out!

A leader board will be set up so fans and players can follow the high runs of the event .

We had an "anonymous patron" who attended last year and thoroughly enjoyed himself. This generous patron has stipulated he would like to remain anonymous, but will be attending the event to watch the high runs.

Chicago, NYC, and Philly: Winners of the Qualifiers for Predator World 14.1 Championship

The verdicts are in, and six new additions will meet the 52 invited players from around the world at the 2007 Predator World Straight Pool Championship on July 9-14 at the Hilton East Brunswick New Jersey.

In Chicago, newly opened On Cue Billiards owned by Tom Karabotsos hosted the only midwest qualifier. Karabotsos hosted a qualifier last year and won the event and decided to encore his performance and won this year's as well. Mark Snodgrass won the loser's side and will be joining Karabotsos in his premiere at the World 14.1 Championship.

In Philadelphia, Drexeline Billiards hosted its 2nd Qualifier in two years, but owner Bob Maidhof received an invite this year giving his patrons a breather in the competition. Shaun Wilkie , multi-winner on the Planet Pool Tour, won the spot and Ed Deska won the 2nd position into the main tournament. Deska played last year and also refereed the final match.

Finally in New York City at Amsterdam Billiard Club, the action was stiff in the city where 14.1 thrives in the US. New comer to the event Joey Kong won the event with long time 14.1 advocate Stu Mattana finishing 2nd. Mattana, who is sparring partner/coach to Jennifer Barretta, outlasted his opponents till 5am.

Congratulations to Tom Karabotsos, Joey Kong, Shaun Wilkie, Mark Snodgrass, Ed Deska, and Stu Mattana. They will be part of 14.1 history when they join the ranks of Hopkins, Hohmann, Schmidt, Engert, Souquet, Ortmann and many more at the Predator World Straight Pool Championship!
