Lee Chenman comes good at 2007 World Summit

Writing from Las Vegas where he just finished in 5th place at the World Summit Of Pool, Chenman said he was, "absolutely delighted as I beat some great names. This is one of the biggest International Tournaments on the calendar and I can't believe I have finished 5th!"

The tournament is double elimination, and even though Lee lost his 1st match 11-10 (to Tony Crosby), he then won 7 straight matches, only to be, "disappointed to lose 11-9 last night" to top Filipino Francisco Bustamante. "If I won that match it would have been down to the final four and TV for ESPN Worldwide."

"Read More..." for the details.

Chenman's run lists like a who's who directory of top pool players...

Steve Lillis - USA (USA Ranked Top 32) 11-10
Thorsten Hohmann - Germany (World Ranked Top 8 and 2001 World Champion) 11-8
Rob Saez - USA (USA Ranked Top 5) 11-5
David Hemmah - USA (USA Ranked top 32) 11-9
Mika Immonen - Finland (World Ranked Top 6 and 2002 World Champion) 11-10
Ernesto Dominguez - Mexico (World Ranked Top 32) 11-8
Corey Deuel - USA (World Ranked Top 5 and No.1 USA) 11-8

Finally lost 11-9 to Francisco Bustamante - Philippines (World Ranked Top 4 Player)

Pagulayan Roars at the Billiard Factory World Summit of Pool

Las Vegas, Nevada- Day 4 of the Billiard Factory World Summit of Pool was filled with excitement with three top notch matches. A sold out crowd filled the newly configured arena with one featured Olhausen Championship Pro table. First up was Warren Kiamco making his ESPN debut against Francisco Bustamente, a veteran of ESPN events. Kiamco found himself fortunate with some rolls to take an early 3-1 lead, but as Bustamente proved this past March at the US Pro Tour Championship, no deficit could be too large for him to overcome. Bustamente wins 7-4.

The Pagulayan/Bustamente semi-finals proved to be exciting and bewildering with Pagulayan taking a commanding 5-2 lead. Both players were in good spirits with laughter and joking echoing the entire match. But Bustamente again fought back to 5-4 before missing a 9-Ball to tie the match and then Pagulayan tried to make the winning 9-ball with his head turned facing away, that was an easy simple short straight in shot. He missed with a genuine look of shock on his face, but ended up making the shot when Bustamente missed the 9-Ball afterwards.

The final match was a re-match between The Lion and the South Dakota Kid. Van Boening trailed early on to Pagulayan, despite making just minor errors. Alex stood at 5-2 lead once again with smiles and jokes, but a few errors and Shane's awesome break and fire power soon eroded the laughing and the score stood at 5-5. Shane's break failed him in rack 11 when he scrathed in the side off the break and Pagulayan breathed heavily to run out out and broke and ran out to the 9-Ball in the next game. Making the final 9-Ball with a joyous yell, he soon stopped and screamed, "Oh no...yaaa!!" as the cue ball went two rails towards the side pocket for a scratch....but the cue ball avoided the side pocket by an inch and a relieved Pagulayan threw his hands up in celebration for sure this time as the new champion of the World Summit of Pool!

Billiard Factory World Summit Day 3: USA Counts on Van Boening Again

Las Vegas, Nevada- Judgement Day at the World Summit as the final 4 players for the ESPN rounds would be determined. First the youngsters John Morra and Austin Murphy were schooled by Filipino Head Masters Alex Pagulayan and Francisco Bustamante (11-1). Kiamco kept the asian roll going with a win over Stevie Moore. Van Boening kept the USA alive on winner's side with 11-4 domination of Dominguez and later entered the hot seat finals with a 11-7 defeat of Kiamco. Pagulayan would destroy Bustamente 11-3 to meet Van Boening.

Deuel was on a roll on the losers side eliminating Robles, Frank, and Moore. Heuwagen was making the most of his rare trip to the majors with wins over Crosby, Lombardo, and Morra. But the big surprise dark horses was the high gear plays of Hong Kong's Lee Chenman and California's road toughie Tony Chohan. Chohan lost his second round match only to go on a T-Rex terror of 6 consecutive wins including a stunner over Marlon Manalo. Chenman, who has been cold since his win at the Weert Open 2 years ago, went crazy and eliminated champion after champion in 7 matches including Hohmann, Immonen, and Deuel. For dessert, he wiped out Saez and Dominguez.

Unfortunately for both new top UPA finishers, they were held one match short of worldwide fame of ESPN as Chenman lost 11-9 to Bustamente and Chohan fell to Kiamco 11-6.

On the hot seat match, Van Boening kept control of the match against young veteran Pagulayan and won an easier than expected 11-4 match. One USA player now stands alone against 3 awesome Filipinos. In a world filled with foreign dominance, America once again shines through one brilliant player. With the win two weeks ago at the World 10-Ball Championships, and now primed for the finals at the World Summit of Pool, 23 year old South Dakotan Van Boening may prove to the Philippines there may be a new sheriff in town.

Top Dogs Eliminated on Day 2 of Billiard Factory World Summit of Pool

Las Vegas, Nevada- Hohmann, Schmidt, Williams, Parica, Morris, Saez, Hopkins. All gone. After the smoke cleraed on Day 2, survivors left are Lee Chenman(who had a great run today defeating Hohmann and Saez back to back matches), Troy Frank, Crosby, Orcullo, and Deuel (eliminating Filipinos Lapena and Montal back to back ). These players live to fight another day tomorrow.

On the winner's side, teenagers John Morra and Austin Murphy are inspiring the youth of USA pool with their undefeated runs so far. Morra upset veteran Mika Immonen 11-8 while 13 year old Murphy schooled the older Walter Glass 11-4. Pagulayan won over Hemmah, Bustamante won 11-7 over Robles, Moore won a close 11-9 over Jones in a near 3 hour match battle, and Van Boening continues his dominance with 11-7 victory over fellow South Dakota native Lee Heuwagen.

Marquee match ups tomorrow will include Jeremy Jones versus Marlon Manalo and John Morra versus his Canadian Filipino hero Alex Pagulayan.

Upsets Galore: Day 1 of Billiard Factory World Summit of Pool

Las Vegas, Nevada- Giant names started going over to the wrong side of the board in the A.M. sessions first with John Schmidt as he fell to Filipino wizard Alex Pagulayan 11-8. Pagulayan would later advance over Tony Chohan 11-5. Local westerner "Big Wave" Dave Hemmah won his first two matches including a win over the recently hot Ronnie Wiseman 11-5. Charlie Williams took care of San Diego top dog Louis Ulrich 11-7 but then fell his next match to Warren Kiamco 11-4. Al Lapena defeated fellow Filipino Marlon Manalo while Filipino nightmare Francisco Bustamante indulged in some Canadian Bacon as he destroyed Canada's Tyler Edey 11-2 and then gobbled up Canadian Jeff Kennedy.

But the real story of the day was the amount of upsets in the opening rounds. In the second part of the top bracket, the seemingly obvious favorites were #5 UPA seed Rob Saez and #12 seed Tony Crosby. Unfortunately for the paper favorites, it was the day for unseeded players as young LA native Oscar Dominguez(son of legendary Mexican player Ernesto Dominguez) defeated Saez. Saez had defeated Oscar's father at the US Pro Tour Championship held in Los Angeles in March, and fittingly Ernesto's son avenged him. And then another upset followed an upset with 13 year old USA Junior Champion Austin Murphy defeating Oscar Dominguez 11-5. Walter Glass, a throw back pro from way back when, escaped Steve Lillis 11-10 and then unseated UPA pro Crosby 11-8. Glass and Murphy will be replacing Saez and Crosby in the winner's side third round. Other upset highlights included Lee Heuwagen over Parica, Stevie Moore over Dennis Orcullo, and Jeff Kennedy over Rodney Morris.

Shane Van Boening continues his hot streak with two wins today including second round 11-5 against #10 seed Troy Frank . He was scheduled to meet #1 USA Ranked Deuel in the third round tomorrow but will face Ernesto Dominguez instead after Dominguez demolished Deuel 11-2.

The evening ended at midnight with a fitting last upset. Super unknown Demetrius Jalatis had no ones attention after trailing Thorsten Hohmann 6-0 and later 7-1. 1 hour later Jelatis held the lead 9-7 after 8 consecutive game wins. Making some crucial difficult shots, Jalatis showed world class poise and defeated Hohmann 11-9 to advance undefeated to Day 2.

Action continues tomorrow with Jeremy Jones facing Stevie Moore, Luc Salvas versus Ernesto Dominguez, Robles vs Bustamante, John Morra versus Mika Immonen and many more.
