Feijen terminated them all

„The Terminator“ Niels Feijen (NED) just won the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open in Leende, The Netherlands, with a 9:7 victory over David Alcaide (ESP) in the final match.

The final match between Feijen and Alcaide began with a break and run from Alcaide. That was the only time that Alcaide had a lead over Feijen for a long time in the match. Feijen came up strong and look a 3:1 lead over Alcaide. But Alcaide stayed in the match, never allowing Feijen to get away too far. After twelve racks, the score was leveled at 6:6. Then Alcaide even got to 7:6 over Feijen. But „The Terminator“ showed a strong will for victory today. In rack 14, Feijen broke and ran out to equalize the score at 7:7. Then, Alcaide had no shot after his break in rack 15 but he tried to force the 1-ball in. He failed and allowed Feijen back to the table. „The Terminator“ played a safety shot which was not good enough for Alcaide. The Spaniard started shooting, ran out of position and tried to play a safety for his Dutch opponent. Feijen got to the table and solved the problem by firing the 4-ball in with a jump shot and running the table, getting on the hill with 8:7 and his own break shot coming up. He had the 1-ball down in the side-pocket but could not pocket the 2-ball anywhere. So he came up with a brilliant safety shot which gave Alcaide no other option but try to hit the 2-ball and avoid a foul. Alcaide did contact the 2-ball first but left an open table for Feijen who took his chance and ran the rack for the victory on his home turf here in The Netherlands, winning the final match with 9:7 over David Alcaide.

„It feels great!“, Feijen answered when asked about his feeling to have broken the „Dutch curse“ in The Netherlands today. „I won a Euro-Tour in Holland before when it was still in Weert, but that was back in the early 2000’s“, added Feijen, „but the last two years I did not play all too good over here.“ „Now the pressure for the Mosconi team is gone“, Feijen said, „I played David last week in Italy at the Verona Cup and I lost so it’s nice to set that straight in a good sportsmanship, of course.“

Szewczyk dealt a blow to Gray’s Mosconi Cup ambitions

In the quarter-finals of the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open, Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) ousted number one ranked player Mark Gray (GBR) with 9:5.

Mark Gray and Niels Feijen are in direct competition with regards to making it on the Mosconi Cup team this year. While Feijen needed to get further than Gray, the Brit would have been in ending the Dutch Open ranked equally high than Feijen. But Szewczyk also had something to say about that. He encountered Gray in the quarter-final match and has played a magnificent tournament so far. He ousted Maximilian Lechner (AUT) and Imran Majid (GBR) for his spot in the match against Gray who defeated Albin Ouschan (AUT) and Denis Grabe (EST) in the knock-out stages. The heat was on for Gray in that match while Szewczyk could play a bit more relaxed since his pressure was not that high. So the match started to the liking of Szewczyk who took a quick 4:0 lead over Gray. That was actually the advantage the he kept throughout the match. Whenever Gray scored a rack, Szewczyk answered that and scored one back so the four-point distance remained until the very end of the match. Gray could not get closer to Szewczyk and lost 5:9.

All Gray needed now to still make it on the team definitely was Feijen to lose his quarter-final match as well. Feijen dealt with Roman Hybler (CZE). Unlike in Gray’s match, Feijen was always leveled with Hybler. In fact, Feijen always even had small one or two point lead over Hybler. When leading 8:7, Feijen lined up a nice 3-9 combination shot and pocketed it to win his match 9:7 over Roman Hybler. That victory puts Feijen in the semi-finals of the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open against Wojciech Szewczyk but also guarantees him a spot in this year’s Mosconi Cup team.

The other semi-final will be an all-Spanish affair. Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz who had taken care of Marco Spitzky (GER), Konrad Juszczyszyn (POL) and Woytek Trajdos (POL) will be put against David Alcaide who subdued Karol Skowerski (POL), Alexander Kazakis (GRE) and Fedor Gorst (RUS) for his seat in the semi-finals.

Christmas comes early for Kazakis

Judgement day has arrived at the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open in Leende, The Netherlands. The single elimination round of the last 32 players has been played tonight and probably the most remarkable and spectacular result was Alexander Kazakis’ (GRE) triumph over Mario He (AUT) with 9:8.

Actually, the match went very much as expected. Both contestants are able to perform on a very high level and so they both did in the beginning of the match. They knew that valuable points and prize money was at stake. Kazakis turned out to have a better roll of the balls and played quite confident. He was up 7:5 and 8:6 with a promising look at the finish line. But He struck back and got to 7:8. Then, Kazakis cleared the rack and lined up a straight 9-ball which was lying 20cm away from the pocket with the cue ball being 20cm away from the 9-ball. The shot was as easy as it can get. But what happened then can hardly be described. Kazakis was probably already celebrating the victory and his promotion into the last 16 players of the event when he executed the shot because… he missed it! It remained hanging over the pocket. Kazakis kind of collapsed on the table since he could not believe what he’d just done. Mario He also could not believe what he saw. He received an additional life in the match, completely unexpected for him!

So He went for the break shot in rack 17 and made a ball with a shot on the 1-ball. The 6-ball was close to the 9-ball and lined up in the direction of the corner pocket but it needed to be hit from a certain angle. So Mario He went for the balls and lined up the winning shot but he placed the cue ball a little bit too high. So he had to fire the shot at a high speed in order to prevent the cue ball from obstructing the 9-ball on its way into the pocket. The Austrian fired the shot, the 9-ball went in and the cue ball kissed the 7-ball at high speed and scratched in the side pocket. What an exchange of emotions in that match. Kazakis was now in the seat, still struggling with his mistake from the rack before and got to the table with ball in hand and four balls left on the table. He ran them and won the match with 9:8. That could probably very well be seen as an early Christmas present for him. Kazakis will meet David Alcaide (ESP) tomorrow who eliminated Karol Skowerski (POL) 9:6.

Kaplan breaks „The Granite“ in Dynamic Billard Dutch Open

Europe’s number 1 player Mark Gray (GBR) aka „The Granite“ lost his match in the winner’s qualification round of the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open in Leende, The Netherlands, with 7:9 to strong Tomasz Kaplan (POL).

Gray’s form in the past season has been second to none. He has reached the quarter-finals four times and won twice. Former World Champions and European top players like Feijen, Ouschan or Souquet are kept at a distance by the successful Brit. However, in this tournament Gray needs to come up with an extra effort in order to continue his triumphal march. In the winner’s qualification round, he faced Poland’s Tomasz Kaplan and the match was as fiercely fought over as expected. In fact, Kaplan had the better beginning. He took the first four consecutive racks and demonstrated quite impressively that he was not going to give this away to Gray for free. But Gray has a massive self-confidence, mainly because of his amazing performance during the past months. He fought his way back into the match and even got to 7:7. Rack 15 saw „The Granite“ breaking the balls. He had one ball down but only one more ball crossed the head string so the break was illegal and Kaplan got to the table. A long exchange of safety shots followed and had Kaplan as the winner. The Polish got the position to pocket a ball and ran the rack from there to get on the hill. 8:7 was the score in favor of Kaplan, one more point needed to defeat the number 1! It was Kaplan’s break coming up in rack 16. He had some balls down but no position on the 1-ball. Again, safeties were exchanged and again Kaplan won that encounter. With a bit help from the roll of the balls he got the chance to pocket a ball first and he made use of it. He ran the rack, showing no nerves and winning the match 9:7 over Mark Gray. Kaplan is qualified for the round of the last 32 players single elimination which is scheduled for 20:30 CET tonight.

The remarkable results from today’s winner’s qualification round include Woytek Trajdos (POL) defeating Mario He (AUT) 9:7. Russian youngster Fedor Gorst, one of the youngest players left on the winner’s side, pipped Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) to the post with 9:8. Karol Skowerski (POL) conquered Ralf Souquet (GER) 9:6 and sent him to the loser’s round.

Today’s feature match which will be live on Facebook will be the match at around 17:45 CET where German Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet will fight for survival in the tournament against the winner of Portugal’s Jorge Tinoco and EPBF 2015 Player of the Year Francisco Diaz-Pizarro from Spain.

Marco Spitzky (GER)

Hard times for favorites

Today, many favorite players had a tougher job in front of them than expected at the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open in the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende, The Netherlands. Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) for example, long time Euro-Tour powerhouse and currently ranked number 28 in Europe, was ousted by unheralded Marco Spitzky (GER) with 7:9 in loser’s round two.

After yesterday and this afternoon, when Daryl Peach and Nick van den Berg went down to their opponents, the run for the dark horses continued here. Stepanov was the next victim of such a constellation. He fell to the sharp blade of Spitzky who made it to the next round on the loser’s side. Stepanov was able to get the better start in the match. The first three racks belonged to him. But then Spitzky seemed to wake up and also started potting balls. When Spitzky even overtook Stepanov, the Russian went for his time-out. But that did not help him. Spitzky always kept his nose in front of Stepanov and reached the finish line first, winning the match 9:7.

Marcus Chamat, „The Napoleon“ from Sweden just escaped that fate in the tournament. After having received a cruel bashing by Max Lechner (AUT) with 2:9 yesterday, Chamat needed to get some wins on the loser’s side. His first opponent was Michal Turkowski (POL) who was not much of an obstacle for Chamat. 9:6 was the final result in favor of the experienced Swede. Then he encountered young Kestutis Zadeikis from Lithuania. The young man showed absolutely no nerves and got Chamat in the back seat from the very beginning of the match. 5:1 and 6:2 were the intermediate results in favor of Zadeikis. But then Chamat fought his way back into the match. After several mistakes from the young Lithuanian, the scoreboard showed 8:8 with Chamat having the break in rack 17. What a drama unfolded! Chamat just had a possible layout and one ball down on his break shot. He deployed all his skill and energy in the rack and ran it, winning the match with the closest of all results 9:8. That just kept Chamat alive in the event, having survived loser’s round two only.

Other remarkable results from today’s loser’s rounds include multiple European and former World Champion Oliver Ortmann (GER) losing his second match against Ivo Aarts (NED) 7:9. That also ends Ortmann’s quest for glory here in Leende this year. Daryl Peach (GBR) made a statement and wiped the floor with Gino de Ruyter (BEL), sending him home 9:0.

Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open will continue at 09:00 CET with matches from the loser’s round 3.

Rui Edgar Franco (POR)

The Dutch curse continues in The Netherlands

Rui Edgar Franco (POR) just defeated Nick van den Berg (NED) 9:4 in the second winner’s round of the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open in Leende, The Netherlands.

His home turf does not seem to be a promising ground for van den Berg. So far, the successful Dutch top player never achieved a top finish at a Euro-Tour event in his own country. It looks like this might be continuing this year. Van den Berg was up in winner’s round two against Franco from Portugal. Rui Edgar Franco is not necessarily a blank sheet in the European pool world. He has played a few Euro-Tours and European Championships but never finished in the top ranks. Probably one of his biggest achievements was to win the qualifier in Albania this year with his friend Joao Grilo as team Portugal for the upcoming World Cup of Pool. Compared to that, van den Berg entered the match as the mile high favorite player. Though Franco managed to win the first rack, van den Berg snatched the next four in a row and after five racks the scoreboard expected the more or less expected result of 4:1 in favor of van den Berg. Then Franco went for a time-out. After that, van den Berg continued as before but when he played the 7-ball he kicked into the 9-ball and the cue ball scratched. At that point in time nobody believed that this might be a turning point in the match; especially not such a massive one. But whatever van den Berg did - he could not win another rack. Franco leveled the match after the next two racks and the score was 4:4. He broke the balls and continued play. When he went for the 5-ball he legally pocketed it and the 9-ball was also pocketed. So Franco could take the lead for the first time in the match.

Rack ten was fiercely fought over with many safety shots exchanged by both contestants. Again it was Franco who got started first and went for the open balls after van den Berg left a shot for him. The Portuguese took his chance and also put that rack into his account. The next break shot was executed by Franco but he came up dry with no balls down. Even this opportunity van den Berg was not able to turn into a point for his score. He already missed the second shot and Franco once more ran out. To cut a long story short, the match continued exactly along those lines and van den Berg did not get one more rack. After his time-out, Franco took eight consecutive racks off van den Berg and won the match 9:4. Franco will meet German young gun Joshua Filler in his next match on the winner’s side tomorrow while van den Berg encounters the winner of Chinglong Lai (HKG) and Ralf Mrnka (GER).

Other remarkable results from today include Radoslaw Babica (POL) winning 9:6 over Francisco Diaz-Pizarro (ESP).

Today’s feature match which will be live on Facebook will be the match at 17:45 CET between Andreas Gerwen (SWE) and Petri Makkonen (FIN). It's the battle of Scandinavia. See these two go for the Scandinavian bragging rights.

Roman Hybler (CZE)

Hybler overmastered Peach

In a classic clash between two high profile players, Roman Hybler (CZE) outplayed Daryl Peach (GBR) 9:2 at the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open in Leende, The Netherlands.

Throughout the whole match, Hybler was the dominating player at the table. He broke and ran his first rack. Then it was Peach’s turn at the table to level the score. But the Brit could not pocket the 8-ball. However, he fluked it in an unwanted pocket and had a tough but makable shot on the 9-ball which he missed. Hybler took his chance and got a 2:0 lead over Peach. Rack three did not necessarily see Hybler playing overly strong but showing an unfocussed Peach. The rack was almost sure to be in his account. He had lined up for an easy 9-ball but to his horror missed that shot! It seemed as if Peach was not able to make winning shots in this match. That kind of brought Peach even more off track. Frustration seemed to gain the upper hand on Peach. He played some shots with more speed and power than needed which was a clear indication that he had a big anger inside him to deal with. No wonder he also lost the 4th rack and the scoreboard displayed 4:0 for Hybler. Peach then went for a time-out and managed to win his first rack in the match right after it. But still the balls did not roll in his favor. He broke rack five and did not get a position on the lowest numbered ball. Still he managed to get the rack going in his favor. But the horror continued for him. He pocketed the 9-ball with a thin cut shot in the side pocket but the cue ball scratched over two rails in the other side pocket. What a bad day for Peach!

On top of Peach’s bad luck, Hybler played pretty solid and started to pick up his break racks. That constellation brought the match to 6:1 in favor of Hybler. In rack eight Peach even got ball in hand with four balls left on the table. Unbelievable, but he could not run these balls and get the point into his account. He fell out of position after his first shot and hid the cue ball behind the 7-ball with the 6-ball on. That set was probably one of the worst ones for Peach in his whole career. Hybler got to 7:1 and ran out another rack to go on the hill 8:1. At that time, Peach had already given himself up. He took another rack before Hybler closed the book 9:2 on Peach who was not much of a challenge for him today.

Other remarkable results from winner’s round 1 today include number one ranked player Mark Gray (GBR) taking an easy 9:3 victory over Stephen Vandeplassche (BEL). Dudanets wins over Dalmatin despite several hiccups

Karlo Dalmatin (CRO) lost to Maksim Dudanets (RUS) with 8:9 in a heartbreaker at the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open Euro-Tour in Leende, The Netherlands.

The first round match started out as expected. Dudanets had a grip on the match and took a quick and comfortable 6:1 lead over Dalmatin. It looked like the Croatian would receive a tough bashing by the Russian kid. But then Dalmatin somehow recovered and started playing more focussed while Dudanets committed some negligent mistakes. „These pockets do not allow mistakes“, stated Dudanets right after the match. And he definitely knew what he was talking about. His easy going allowed Dalmatin to get a foot back in the door. Better performance together with a bit of luck turned the match which started out as a one-sided show into a thriller. Trailing 4:7, Dalmatin found himself on the table without any position. Dudanets had played a safety shot and Dalmatin needed to hit the 4-ball over one rail. In fact, he did not only hit the correct ball but also pocketed the 9-ball unwanted in the side pocket in order to turn the scoreboard to 5:7. That obviously caught Dudanets a bit off-track. The Russian struggled and started to commit easy mistakes himself. Leading 7:5, he missed an easy 6-ball and Dalmatin accepted the gift, coming closer with 6:7. Rack number 14 was a break and run by Dalmatin.

The tension got high in the match. Dudanets answered that action with a break and run himself to get on the hill, leading 8:7. In rack 16 again, Dudanets had the chance to finish the match but he once again missed a makable shot. He played a poor position on the 4-ball and consequently missed it. Dalmatin got his nerves together and all of a sudden the match was a hill-hill affair at 8:8 with Dudanets’ break to come up. The drama seemed to be complete for the young Russian when the cue ball scratched after his break shot. All balls were spread wide open on the table with Dalmatin having ball in hand. But whatever the Croatian was thinking, he took a huge risk and tried to cheat the pocket on the 3-ball in order to get a better position on the 4-ball. The 3-ball did not fall in the pocket and Dudanets got back to the slate. „I know I lost focus in the middle of the match“, said Dudanets, „and the game started punishing me. Rightfully so! However, in the end I was a bit lucky and still managed to win the match somehow“. That was very true and displayed in the final rack. Dudanets once again missed the 6-ball and Dalmatin could not benefit from it. He also missed the 6-ball and Dudanets finished him with 9:8 in the end. Dudanets was victorious over Dalmatin but the match was by far not as clear as it would have been expected beforehand.

Other remarkable results from today’ first round matches include former junior World 9-Ball Champion Christian Goetemann (GER) winning 9:6 over local player Tim Jonkman (NED). A bit of a surprise was the 9:8 victory of Nicolas van Parys (BEL) over Michal Turkowski (POL).

Dynamic Billard Dutch Open sets sail

The next Euro-Tour is about to begin as 159 players from over 30 countries have announced for the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open 2016 in The Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel, Leende, The Netherlands.

For the third time already, the Euro-Tour stops in the Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel in Leende. Though the space is a bit limited and the event can only be played on eleven tables, many players have enrolled for the event as usually when the Euro-Tour comes to The Netherlands.

Since less tables than normally are in use, the event lasts one day longer than usually and the final match will be played on Sunday at 17:30 CET.

As always, valuable points for the European rankings are at stake as well as 34.000,-€ in prize money. The current leader of the rankings, Mark Gray from Great Britain, still has a comfortable lead over 2nd Albin Ouschan from Austria and 3rd Niels Feijen from The Netherlands. However, due to the newly installed European rankings system this situation could dramatically change if Gray does not perform up to his normal level here. The European rankings include also other independent events in the count but the Euro-Tour results are multiplied by two in order to emphasize the meaning and value of the Euro-Tour. It can be assured that Ouschan as well as Feijen and the ones behind them like Petri Makkonen (FIN), David Alcaide (ESP) or Ralf Souquet (GER), just to name a few, are waiting in the wings for any sign of weakness that might be shown by Gray. Excitement and action is guaranteed to happen here in Leende since almost all top European players have enlisted into the event.

The organizers will choose a feature match every day and broadcast ist LIVE through the EPBF Facebook page. Also interviews and other interesting stories are planned.

The Euro-Tour will be played on 11 tables which will all be streamed LIVE throughout the whole event. In order to be able to follow all the action LIVE, premium membership can be purchased at www.kozoom.com. Once a premium membership is held, all events for the respective period of time can be viewed LIVE. Additionally, a huge video gallery is contained in the website.

The event will be hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) and organized by International Billiard Promotion (IBP).
