2016 French Open gets underway in Paris
The main event starts today with some heavyweight players joining the fray, in addition to those who have advanced from the qualification groups.
Reigning French Open champion Imran Majid (GBR) is looking to defend the title he captured in 2015, while the talented Dutch duo of Marc Bijsterbosch and Huidji See are also in town. Both went deep in this event last time round but came up short in the final stages. Can either of them go further this time around to dethrone the Maharaja?
The French pool community will be hoping it is third time lucky for one of their players. Having seen the trophy go to British players in the first two editions, it would be a big celebration for a Frenchman to take down this event.
Vincent Facquet has come close before, losing in the final to Karl Boyes in 2014 and the quarter finals to Majid last year. Meanwhile, French number one Stephan Cohen has not lived up to his reputation in this event to date – perhaps that is about to change.
Lastly, a possible dark horse is current French 9-ball champion Boris Li. He reached the last 16 in the French Open last year and is also the reigning French 8 ball champion.
