Fortunski on fire for 10-ball title

With a magnificent performance so far, Mieszko Fortunski (POL) ousted Mats Schjetne (NOR) 8:2 from the 10-ball discipline at the Dynamic Billard European Championships in Hotel Alpina, Alpendorf, St. Johann i.Pg., Austria.

Big names have fallen today in the men�s division. Favorite players like #1 seeded player Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz are among the victims just like Nick van den Berg (NED), Niels Feijen (NED), Albin Ouschan (AUT), Marcus Chamat (SWE), Mario He (AUT), Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) � just to name a few. But Fortunski is one of the last four men standing in the men�s 10-ball. He defeated Mats Schjetne in the quarter-final match with 8:2, leaving not many chances for Schjetne to take. Fortunski seems to be on fire since his last Euro-Tour victory in March in Treviso and he is definitely counted in as favorite for the title now. In the semi-final which will be played tomorrow evening at 18:00 CET, Fortunski will meet Petri Makkonen (FIN) who smashed Mario He (AUT) 8:2 in his quarter-final match tonight. The other semi-final will be played between David Alcaide (ESP) and underdog Miguel Silva (POR).

In the women�s division, Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) obviously recovered from her defeat against Christine Feldmann in the round before. She won her quarter-final with 6:4 over strong playing Tina Vogelmann (GER). Her opponent in the semi-final tomorrow is Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) who eliminated Kristina Tkach (RUS) with 6:1 today. The second semi-final will be played between Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) and Line Kjoersvik (NOR).

In the wheelchair division, the tournament is also down to the semi-final matches. Kurt Deklerck (BEL) surprisingly taught a lesson to Henrik Larsson (SWE) with 6:1. Daniel Lee (GBR) will be Deklerck�s opponent in the semis since he ousted Roy Kimberley 6:2 today. Defending Champion Jouni Tahti (FIN) overcame Fred Dinsmore (IRL) 6:2 and David Himpe (BEL) won 6:5 over Matej Brajkovic (SLO).

Baumgartner destroyed the defending Champion

In the winner�s qualification round of the Dynamic Billard European Championship 10-ball women�s division, Sandra Baumgartner (AUT) destroyed defending Champion Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) with 6:1.

All Khodjaeva could do was tie the match at 1:1. From then on, Baumgartner was too strong for her today. She did not commit any mistake at all apart from one position and thus played almost perfect. She used every chance that she was given. Khodjaeva did not really get a chance to get going at all because Baumgartner did not allow her to the table in order to perform. Consequently, Baumgartner rightfully won the match with 6:1 and proceeds to the single elimination stage while Kamila Khodjaeva needs to win another match on the loser�s side.

In the same round, Christine Feldmann (SUI) overcame Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) 6:5. Feldmann was already down 2:5 and it looked like a clear affair for the Austrian player. But then Jasmin scratched while playing the 7-ball and gave Feldmann a second life in the match. Instead of winning 6:2, the score was now 3:5. Feldmann hung in there and both players committed some mistakes but Jasmin was not able anymore to capitalize from Feldmann�s mistake. To the contrary, Christine Feldmann used Ouschan�s misses and pulled back rack after rack in order to turn the tide in the match and win it with 6:5.

In the men�s division, the tournament is already in single elimination mode. The last 64 players are playing to survive. There, Albin Ouschan (AUT) clearly defeated Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) with 8:1. Ouschan will play David Alcaide (ESP) in the next round. Alcaide has ousted Chris Papageorgiou (GRE) with 8:5.

Another unexpected result was presented by Jure Potocnik (SLO) who managed to eliminate Stephan Cohen (nothing) with 8:6 from the 10-ball chart.

In the wheelchair division, defending Champion Jouni Tahti (FIN) also suffered a heavy loss. He had to give in to all time opponent Henrik Larsson (SWE) 2:6.

Since this was the winner�s qualification round, Tahti will get another chance to make it to the final stage of the event. Another favored player got also smashed. Matej Brajkovic (SLO) defeated Kurt Deklerck (BEL) with 6:1.

Today will feature more 10-ball action in all three divisions, men, women and wheelchair.

Spectacular shooting by Roos

At the Dynamic Billard European Championships 10-ball, Caroline Roos (SWE) outfought Diana Khodjaeva (BEL) with a convincing 6:1 result.

In the women�s 10-ball division, 43 players in total strive for the title. One match on the winner�s side was Caroline Roos versus Diana Khodjaeva. After four racks, Roos was already up 3:1 over Khodjaeva. The Belgian obviously struggled with her performance today. She played a push-out which Roos used to run out the rack, taking a 4:1 lead. Then, Roos ran the rack again but missed the 9-ball. That was the perfect opportunity for Khodjaeva to get a foot in the door again and to make it a match. But to the contrary, Khodjaeva also missed the 9-ball and left it hanging over the pocket for Roos. Caroline made the remaining two balls and went on the hill with 5:1. The 7th and final rack turned out to deliver the final point needed for Roos to win the match with 6:1 and proceed to the next round.

Khodjaeva will get another chance on the loser�s side but she will need to improve her performance if she wants to repeat the success of last year when she won the bronze medal in 10-ball.

Other remarkable results in the women�s division include Tina Vogelmann (GER) winning 6:5 over favored Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS). Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) also seems to be on a good roll theses days. Today, she defeated Polish heavyweight Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) 6:2. Defending Champion Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) is right on track. She won her first match over Zrinka Antonijevic (CRO) clearly with 6:1 and will face Sandra Baumgartner (AUT) in the next winner�s round tomorrow morning at 10:45 CET.

In the men�s division, Albin Ouschan (AUT) has already lost his first match in the first round versus totally unheralded Jani Uski (FIN). In the next round, Ouschan met Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) who lost his first match 5:8 to Niels �The Terminator� Feijen (NED). What a tough draw for Chinakhov! Out of 110 participants in total in the men�S division, he drew Feijen and Ouschan. Ouschan played better than Chinakhov and won 8:3 over the unfortunate Russian. After a tough fight, Roman Hybler (CZE) managed to subdue Maksim Dudanets (RUS) with the closest of all results, 8:7. A big upset was probably the 8:0 victory of Onur Yildrim (TUR) over long-time top player Fabio Petroni (ITA). The Italian could not get going at all and needs to hope for something to bring him back to his game. Daniel Kandi (DEN), music star from Denmark and one of the better known names in the worldwide party scene, managed to defeat hometown hero Mario He (AUT) with 8:4. Dutch youngster Marc Bijsterbosch (NED) vanquished his teammate Nick van den Berg (NED) with 8:5 and gave him extra work to do on the loser�s side.

In the wheelchair division, defending Champion Jouni Tahti (FIN) celebrated his birthday today. To only one who probably did not like the celebration was his opponent Matt Duffy (GBR) who had received a 0:6 doughnut from Tahti. Henrik Larson (SWE) remained the upper hand over Tony Southern (GBR) with a solid 6:3 victory. Roy Kimberley (GBR) and Kim-Ronny Nygaard (NOR) also won their winner�s round matches.

Wolff wins heartbreaker over Yuksel

With a strong performance, Steffen Wolff (NOR) managed to defeat Sina Yuksel (TUR) 8:6 at the Dynamic Billard European Championships 10-ball in the first round.

The tournament has started with the 10-ball competition today. In the first round, Steffen Wolff met Sina Yuksel. Wolff had the better start by far, steaming off with a nice and comfortable 5:0 lead. It looked like he was going to teach a lesson to Yuksel. Suddenly, the Turkish seemed to gain momentum and won rack after rack. This somehow seemed to influence Wolff. His flow seemed to be heavily interrupted. After eleven racks, the scoreboard all of a sudden displayed a 6:5 lead for Yuksel. The match was packed with action and excitement. Then Wolff got going again and won the next three racks which gave him the 8:6 victory over Yuksel. What seemed to start out as a walk in the park turned out to become hard work for Wolff. In the next round, Wolff needs to deal with Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) who won the silver medal in straight pool yesterday. Yuksel walks to the left side of the draw and will seek his luck on the loser�s side. His opponent there has not yet been decided.

Other remarkable results in the men�s division for today include Jim Chawki (SWE) winning 8:6 in the winner�s qualification round over #1 seeded player Francisco Diaz-Pizarro (ESP), last year�s silver medallist. The defending Champion Alexander Kazakis (GRE) is not present so Diaz-Pizarro was seeded #1. Marc Glatz (LUX) took down Stephan Cohen (nothing) quite clearly with 8:2. Marcus Chamat (SWE) just made it over the finish line, handing an 8:7 defeat to Tomasz Kaplan (POL). That was indeed a tough first round draw there for both players and the result displays the similar level that both of them perform on.

In the women�s division, Jennifer Vietz (GER) managed to overpower Louise Furberg (SWE) with 6:5. A bit clearer was the match between Kateryna Polovinchuk (UKR) and Agne Jarusauskaite (LIT. 6:0 was the final result in favor of Polovinchuk. The same result was good for Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) in her match against Johanna Vartiainen (FIN). Line Kjoersvik (NOR) defeated Encarnation Garcia (ESP) with 6:1.

In the wheelchair division, Matt Duffy (GBR) won his match over Leszek Blumzynski (POL) with 6:2. Daniel Lee (GBR) won 6:1 over Urban Oberthanner (AUT).

Today will feature more 10-ball action in all three divisions, men, women and wheelchair.

Dream start at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for team Austria

The first Gold Medals have been awarded at this year�s Dynamic Billard European Championships and team Austria had a dream start in any aspect. Both Gold Medals were taken by the Ouschans, Jasmin in the women�s and Albin in the men�s division.

Jasmin Ouschan had a tough draw today. In the quarterfinals, she dealt with Anna Mazhirina (RUS) quite clearly with 75:21. Then in the semifinal, she encountered Caroline Roos (SWE). That match started off well for Ouschan. She needed 7 innings in order to finish Roos� dreams of a final appearance in straight pool this year. 75:32 was the final result for Ouschan. In the final, she met Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) who had beaten Line Kjoersvik (NOR) 75:61 in her semifinal match. However, the final between Ouschan and Czuprynska turned out to become a nightmare for the Polish. She was allowed to the table three times only and never really got a chance to pocket balls. All she could do was score 2 points and watch Jasmin Ouschan pocket ball after ball in order to snatch the title of the 2016 European Straight Pool Champion.

At the same time, Jasmin�s brother Albin Ouschan (AUT) played on table 1 next to her. He made history tonight. He was even more dominant than his sister in the final match. He won the lag with Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) and forced him to execute the break shot. Stepanov did that and left a possible but tough shot for Ouschan. �It was a do or die situation�, stated Ouschan after the match. �I knew when I went for the shot I�d either make it and get ahead quite well or I might give a chance to Konstantin which I would regret.� Ouschan pocketed the ball and ran another 124 after that, winning the straight pool discipline in the final match in one (1!) inning. That, together with the fact that a pair of brother and sister took the title almost simultaneously, writes a big story in the history of European Pool Billiards.

Albin Ouschan defeated defending Champion Nick van den Berg (NED) in the semifinal with 125:66.

Kamila Khodjaeva on fire

Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) has entered the stage of the last eight players in the women�s straight pool at the Dynamic Billard European Championships in Alpina Sports & Wellness Hotel, St. Johann Pg., Austria.

The tournament did not start too well for Khodjaeva. In the first round, she met Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) and fell 40:75 to the Polish lady. Then, Khodjaeva seemed not to accept an early exit from the straight pool discipline. With consecutive victories over Martine Christiansen (NOR) 75:64, Laura Frances (ESP) 75:61, Silvia Lopez (ESP) 75:63 and then Sandra Baumgartner (AUT) 75:19 today, Khodjaeva booked a ticket for the quarter-finals in the women�s division.

Baumgartner is one of the stronger Austrian female players and definitely had planned to advance to the quarter-finals. But Khodjaeva was too much of an obstacle for her. In the quarter-finals, Khodjaeva will get a chance to take revenge on Czuprynska since Oliwia will be her opponent again.

Other interesting results from today include Line Kjoersvik (NOR) ousting Kristina Tkach (RUS) with 75:66. Kjoersvik then went ahead and took down Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) with 75:35 and booked her seat in the quarterfinal round. Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) also won her first two matches of the day against Encarnation Garcia (ESP) 75:7 and Jennifer Vietz (GER) 75:71. The match against Vietz turned out to be a heartbreaker. In the next round, single elimination of the last 16 players, Seroshtan fell to the sharp blade of Jasmin Ouschan (AUT). 75:17 was the clear result for the defending Champion. Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) also joined the quarterfinals with an impressive 75:23 victory over Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL).

In the men�s division, the Dutch �powerhouses of straight pool� have suffered a heavy loss. While defending Champion Nick van den Berg (NED) has made it to the quarterfinals with 125:42 over Mats Schjetne (NOR) and 125:36 over Steffen Wolff (NOR), his teammates are all out. Probably the heaviest �casualty� of the day is Niels Feijen (NED) who had to give in to David Alcaide (ESP) after he had played two bad safety shots.

The quarterfinal matches in both divisions will begin at 15:00 CET.

No challenge for defending Champions yet

At this year�s Dynamic Billard European Championship for Men, Women and Wheelchair athletes, defending Champion in the men�s division Nick van den Berg (NED) had smooth sailing so far and is through to the single elimination round of the final 32 players. He smashed Chris Papageorgiou (GRE) 100:8 to enter the single elimination stage of the final 64 players. There, he defeated Anthony Brabin (CYP) 125:43. His victory was never endangered and he is playing quite well so far.

More interesting matches in the men�s division from today include van den Berg�s teammate and multiple straight pool champion Niels Feijen (NED) winning his match 100:18 over Dzmitry Chuprov (BLR). He will now face Goerg Hoeberl (AUT) in his next match which will be played at 09:00 CET tomorrow morning.

Andreas Roschkowsky (GER), one of the favorites for the title, won his match in the single elimination stage over Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) with 125:47. Hometown hero Albin Ouschan (AUT) has also entered the next round. He defeated Christian Graser (LUX) clearly with 125:12. Marco Teutscher (NED) came up with an upset in the same round, defeating �Napoleon� Marcus Chamat (SWE) 125:66. Teutscher was up during the whole match. At some stage he was even leading 105:40 over Chamat. But when he needed three more points, he missed. That brought Chamat back to the table. He tried to reach out for a comeback but he missed a combination shot when he had 66 points in his account, leaving enough balls for Teutscher on the table to finish the match.

In another �clash of the generations�, youngster Daniel Tangudd (SWE) remained the upper hand over experienced Stephan Cohen (nothing), winning the match 125:89. He almost made it earlier, but when leading 123:89, Tangudd missed an easy shot and allowed Cohen back to the table. But the French could not capitalize from Tangudd�s mistake and made no ball. Tangudd pocketed two more balls and won the match 125:89.

In the women�s division, the tournament is played down to the loser�s qualification round. Defending Champion, local hero and all-time favored Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) made her way into the round of the last 16 players single elimination with two straight victories over Marika Poikkijoki (FIN) 75:26 and then Jennifer Vietz (GER) 75:40. While the first match was a clear affair for Ouschan, she had to struggle a bit more against Vietz. In fact, the German was already leading 34:16 when Ouschan managed to strike back and overtake Vietz 50:34. That was the beginning of the end of Vietz in that match.

Other remarkable results in the women�s division include Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) winning her match to go to the single elimination stage over Micha Beuriot (NED) with 75:41. Czuprynska�s teammate Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL) joins her there. She won 75:18 over Tina Vogelmann (GER) and send her to the loser�s side.

Roschkowsky comes up with perfect match

The Dynamic Billard European Championships have commenced with the straight pool competition and Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) left a clear mark in terms of going for the title. He won his first round match over Marek Hajdovsky (CZE) in 45 minutes winning 100:0, using only one inning! That is the ultimate start for Roschkowsky and he is definitely a name on the list of the favorites for the title.
Other remarkable first round results include Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) winning with 100:69 over Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS). In the winner�s qualification round of men�s straight pool, the winner of the recent Euro-Tour in Italy, Mieszko Fortunski (POL) lost 55:100 to Mats Schjetne (NOR).

In the first round of the women�s division, favored Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) remained the upper hand over Ana Gradisnik (SLO), winning her first round match with 75:57. However, there were also some surprising results. Tina Vogelmann (GER) used 15 innings in order to win her match over Kristina Tkach (RUS) with 75:45. It seems not to be the day for team Russia. Tkach�s teammate Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) also lost her opener clearly with 34:75 to Silvia Lopez (ESP).

Then, in winner�s round one, came the first appearance of Austrian superstar Jasmin Ouschan (AUT). She rode flawlessly and won quite clearly with 75:26 over Marika Poikkijoki (FIN). Tina Vogelmann continued her quest and defeated Louise Furberg (SWE) 75:17.

Dynamic Billard European Championships, here we go again!

The picture seems to be quite familiar. 24 tables are set up in the tennis hall of the Alpina Sports & Wellness Hotel in Alpendorf, St. Johann Pg., Austria. The venue has seen many European Championship and Euro-Tour events so far. Today, the opening ceremony of the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Men, Women and Wheelchair athletes has taken place in this very venue. Among others, the major of St. Johann Pg., Mr. Guenther Mitterer, the owner of the venue, Mr. Erwin Schwarz and hundreds of players, coaches, referees and officials witnessed the vice-president of the EPBF, Mr. David Morris, opening the event and inviting the guests to a VIP party in the �Eule� disco apr�s ski bar. The fun will end tonight and serious pool action will start early next morning.

From tomorrow on, 195 players from 33 European countries will play for the coveted title of the European Champion in the disciplines straight pool, 10-ball, 8-ball, 9-ball and teams. The Championships last from April 2nd through to April 12th when they will finish with the finals of the 9-ball discipline. The Austrian TV station ORF will come and has planned some LIVE coverage from the final day.
Already today, many pool players from all over Europe have come pouring in into the Alpendorf and cue cases and focussed sportsmen and -women could be seen among the last rest of the ski tourists. The Alpendorf is a very famous ski resort. The season however is coming to an end now. Interested faces from skiers and snowboarders caught a glimpse of the first pool athletes who practiced today in the venue in order to get in shape for tomorrow.

Upon conclusion of the Dynamic Billard European Championships, there will follow two tournaments right after. First, the Dynamic Billard Austrian Open will be played and then the Ballazzo Austrian Women�s Euro-Tour, starting on April 14th and finishing on April 16th just like the Open event. This means that St. Johann im Pongau will be the center for European high class pool action for the upcoming two weeks.
