Event preview: Top European players set to battle it out for the French Open title
With 2014 winner Karl Boyes unable to attend, a new champion will be crowned on 18 October. With a strong field of international talent, there are many credible pretenders to the title.
When Tony “The Tornado” Drago is in town, you know excitement on the table is guaranteed. Don’t blink or you’ll surely miss a spectacular runout in no time at all! After a 9th place finish in the inaugural edition, Drago will be looking to go deeper into the final rounds this year.
Londoner Imran Majid, also known as The Maharaja of Pool, represents the strongest chance for another British winner. Majid was eliminated at the last 16 stage last year but will be among the title favourites and comes into the event in great form, after a second place finish at the most recent Eurotour event in the Netherlands.

A strong contingent from the Benelux region will be present, including Dutch legend Nick van den Berg, former World 10-ball champion Huidji See, rising star Marc Bjisterbosch and Team Belgium representative Serge Das. All of these players certainly have the potential to win the French Open.
The French pool community would be delighted to celebrate a home winner, with the creme-de-la-creme of the country’s talent turning out in force to stake a claim for the trophy. Vincent Facquet has unfinished business in this event, having let a 6-0 lead slip in last year’s incredible final against Karl Boyes.

Meanwhile, Stephan Cohen and Alex Montpellier have enjoyed the limelight with some impressive performances representing Team France in the last two editions of Matchroom’s World Cup of Pool. Last weekend however, the two were opponents in the final of the first national tournament of the 2015/2016 season, with veteran Cohen prevailing 11:7 to take the title.
Other home players to watch include young talents Alain da Costa and Fabio Rizzi, both national champions in recent seasons and having represented their country at European Championship level.
