Portugal claim the title in the teams

With a nice 2:0 victory over Team Germany in the final, Team Portugal won the Gold Medal in the Seniors Team Division at the 2015 Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies.

In the semi-final, the Portuguese almost stumbled. In their match against Finalnd, Manuel Pereira took a quick 8:3 victory over Pauli Laaksonen in 9-ball. However, Sami Karttunen turned the scoreboard to 1:1 with his 7:6 victory over Henrique Correia in 10-ball. The decision had to come from the 8-ball match between Marko Hartikainen and Antonio Neves. That match went hill-hill and Neves managed to run the final rack under an incredible amount of pressure to book the seat in the final against the Germans with his team.

Team Germany ousted Team Austria in the semi-final with 2:1. The final match was not so exciting. Correia won quite convincing with 7:2 in 10-ball over Christian Dingler. Antonio Neves also defeated Reiner Wirsbitzki in 8-ball with 7:2 unexpectedly clear. At that time, the match between Steffen Gross and Manuel Pereira could be stopped since the Portuguese were already on two points. That meant the Gold Medal in the team competition for Team Portugal.

Earlier today, the 9-ball individuals started in the ladies and seniors division. Defending Champions are Karin Michl (GER) and Vegar Kristiansen (NOR). Michl won her first two matches against Annika Nilsson (SWE) 5:1 and Stella Julien (nothing) 5:3. Vegar Kristiansen already lost his opening match against unheralded Jim Telfer (NED) 5:8. He then had to go to the loser’s side where he met Marco Vignola (ITA) to defeat him 8:6. The next match was against Sami Karttunen (FIN). That match went hill-hill with the better end for Kristiansen. He won 8:7 over the Finish.

On another note it must be stated that the Dutch player Jesse Thehu was warned by the EPBF for ongoing unsportsmanlike conduct. For several misbehaviors, Thehu was imposed a fine of 500,-€ on with the warning that any further conflict with the tournament management would cause his immediate withdrawal from this and maybe even future events.

The Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET with matches of the 9-ball individuals competition. At 17:00 CET, the 9-ball finals will begin.

DAY 4

Azar and Bolfelli win the 8-ball individuals

Barbara Bolfelli (ITA) and Senharip Azar (SWE) have just won the Dynamic Billard European Championship titles in the 8-ball individuals.

Bolfelli met Susanne Wessel (GER) in the final match. Bolfelli, being the defending Champion, played more self-confident from the very beginning. It seemed as if Wessel could not get a foot on the ground. She either missed balls or ran out of position. In the end, the final match turned out to be a disaster for Wessel. Bolfelli destroyed Wessel’s hopes for the title with a more than clear 5:0 victory.

In the senior’s division, newcomer Senharip Azar played his first year in the seniors Championships. He came to the final with an amazing 7:1 victory over Dino Cerimagic (BIH) in the semi-final. In the other semi-final, Dirk Stenten (GER) overpowered Csaba Nagy (HUN) 7:3. The final between Stenten and Azar turned out to be a one-man show from Azar. Stenten could not finish his racks and almost always left a chance for Azar to take over the table. That’s what cost him the title in the end. Azar was the better player today and rightfully won the final match with 7:3.

DAY 3

Correia defended the 10-ball crown while Moscetti took her first title

Henrique Correia (POR) and Christina Moscetti (ITA) won the titles in the 10-ball individuals at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies in St. Johann i.Pg., Austria.

The early stage of the final match was determined by several mistakes from Correia. That allowed Thehu to take a quick 3:1 advantage over Correia. But then he scratched in rack 5 and Correia managed to pull back two racks, tying the match at 3:3. In rack 7, Thehu committed a foul and gave ball in hand to Correia who consequently made use of the situation and went ahead 4:3. Rack 8 was dominated by safety play on the 2-ball. Correia managed to force Thehu to commit another foul, and Correia tried to run the rack to get to 5:3. But he missed the 9-ball in the side pocket. Luckily for him, he left a tough shot for Thehu. The missed the 9-ball, too, and left a walk in the park for Correia who got to 5:3. The Portuguese also took the next rack to get on the hill 6:3. With that advantage, Correia got ball in hand in the 10th rack since Thehu committed a foul, again. But Correia could not run out.

He missed the 6-ball in the side pocket, leaving again a tough shot for Thehu. Thehu played a good safety but unfortunately for him, he pocketed the 6-ball and hooked himself on the 7-ball. That was all Correia needed to win the match and the title with 7:3. „I would like to dedicate this title to my friend Paolo Costa“, said an emotional Correia after the awards ceremony.

Cristina Moscetti and Karin Michl both started out quite leveled. After 6 racks, the score was tied at 3:3. Rack 7 was hard fought over. It was Karin Michl who finally won the rack and got to the hill first, leading 4:3. The next break was Moscetti’s. She had a ball down and missed the first shot. After a few safety shots, Moscetti got momentum first and had the balls spread open on the table for her. She cleared the table to make the final match a hill-hill thriller. Rack 9 saw Karin Michl breaking the balls. She had no balls down and gave the table to Moscetti who opened the safety battle. With a lucky safety, Michl forced Moscetti to play a foul shot and received ball in hand with seven balls left on the table. Since these balls were still not in good positions Michl decided to pocket some balls and then go for safety again. When she got to the table she made some amazing shots including pocketing the 6-ball over one rail and getting perfect position for the 7-ball. But when she pocketed the 7-ball, she scratched in the side pocket. Mosquito got to the table with ball in hand and only two balls left. That brought her the title. „It is like a dream for me“, stated Moscetti, „I still cannot believe it.“

DAY 2

Wirsbitzki wins again

The defending Champion in senior’s straight pool, Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER), won the straight pool division at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors with a 100:54 victory over Vegar Kristiansen (NOR).

The final match was packed with action. The early stage saw both players playing at an equal level. After 30 minutes, the score was 36:35 for Kristiansen. But then Wirsbitzki shifted into overdrive. He was about to run the match at with a very convincing and amazing performance. But when he played his last ball, he scratched with the cue ball, giving another chance to Kristiansen. The Norwegian could not believe what he just saw but he tried to do the best he could in order to get back into the match, trailing 36:98. He ran 18 balls but after that, he left enough balls on the table for Wirsbitzki to make the necessary two points and defend his title.

DAY 1

Defending Champion Wirsbitzki through after tough fight

The defending Champion in senior’s straight pool, Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER), won his match in the single elimination round of the last 32 players over Peter Balint (HUN) at the Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies with 75:53.

What looks quite clear has in reality been a tough struggle for the defending Champion. Balint had the far better start and took a 47:9 lead over the German. Then the match turned into a safety battle since none of the two contestants wanted to give any chance to the opponent. But Balint made the mistake and allowed Wirsbitzki to the table with possible shots to make. Wirsbitzki proved that he is on the mission to defend his title. Trailing 45:53, he did not commit any more mistakes and ran 30 balls to win the match with 75:53.

In the next round, Wirsbitzki will meet Dino Cerimagic (BIH) who won his match 75:28 over Steffen Gross (GER). Wirsbitzki won that match also with 75:30 which puts him through to the quarter-finals.

Other interesting results from today include Thomas Damm (GER) ousting Magnus Vesterlund (SWE) clearly with 75:43. Jimmy Worung (NED) made short work of Alex Habo (HUN) and took the match with 75:14. Guys van Helmond (NED) also stayed alive in the straight pool event. With a 75:53 over Csaba Nagy (HUN) he secured his spot in the last 16 players of the event. Alexander Markut (AUT) took care of the first bigger upset at the event. He surprisingly ousted former Champion Henrique Correia (POR) with 75:67. Newcomer in the senior’s division Senharip Azar (SWE) is also on his way. He got the better of Pauli Laakso (FIN) 75:42.

At the same time, the European qualifying tournament for the World Cup of Pool has taken place in the venue in St. Johann. 20 teams from different nations, including Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates played for one spot in the main tournament. The final match was played in the late evening between teams Romania 1 and Romania 2. The winner of that match will be going to the World Cup of Pool. We will report about the winner in the next press release.

The Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET with first round matches of the 10-ball division. The final match in the straight pool individuals will begin at 20:00 local time.
