Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) and Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) have just won the Dynamic Billard Portuguese Open Euro-Tour in Vale do Lobo, Portugal.
The women’s division was once again dominated by Jasmin Ouschan. She made her way through the tournament undefeated and trounced Line Kjoersvik (NOR) in the final match with 7:3. On her way to the final match, Ouschan defeated Natalya Seroshtan (RUS) 7:6, Barbara Bolfelli (ITA) 7:0, Tamara Peeters (NED) 7:6, Kristina Tkach (RUS) 7:2 and Louise Furberg (SWE) 7:1. The final match with Kjoersvik was business as usual in the beginning. Ouschan took an early lead and Kjoersvik did not seem to be able to find any means against her. Then suddenly, Kjoersvik benefited from several mistakes from Ouschan and managed to tie the match at 3:3. The Norwegian took a time-out at that stage which probably worked better for her opponent than for herself. When she cam back, she could not do anything else but watch Ouschan win rack after rack. In the final 10th rack, Ouschan came up with a spectacular finish. The ball on was the 3-ball. It was lying close to the rail and would not go into any pocket. Ouschan played onto the 3-ball and the cue ball kissed the 9-ball which made its way into the corner pocket. That brought Ouschan the victory in the match and the tournament. „I am really happy with that victory“, stated Ouschan“ but I am also really exhausted. I have played so many matches in the last few weeks on the Amway Cup, the European Championships and the Euro-Tour, and I am really looking forward to going home and relax a bit“, said a happy but obviously exhausted Ouschan.

Top Eight Finishers Women’s Division: 1. Jasmin Ouschan (AUT) 2. Line Kjoersvik (NOR) 3. Louise Furberg (SWE) 3. Monica Webb (USA) 4. Kristina Tkach (RUS) 4. Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) 4. Sandra Baumgartner (AUT) 4. Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL)
The men’s final was played between Mateusz Sniegocki and Marcus Chamat (SWE). It was a tough fight as expected between the two. They both had really tough semi-finals to go through. Chamat won 9:7 over Mario He (AUT) while Sniegocki overpowered Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (ESP) by a whisker with 9:8. In the final match one could see that the long days here took their toll from the players. Especially Chamat who has been here for the European Championships as well seemed to struggle with his focus. Sniegocki consequently took a quick 5:1 lead over Chamat. In the 7th rack, Chamat missed a possible 1-ball and Sniegocki could have already made things almost clear. But he also missed the 2-ball by far and Chamat had the chance to turn the tide in the match in his favor. He indeed took two racks to turn the scoreboard to 3:5, still in favor of Sniegocki. From then on, it was more or less only Sniegocki at the table. He won all points needed for victory and took the match and the title with a clear 9:3 result. „I am so happy about this title“, said Sniegocki, „this Euro-Tour had so many players and it is a great honor and a huge achievement for me to be the winner here“, added Sniegocki.
Top Eight Finishers Men’s Division: 1. Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) 2. Marcus Chamat (SWE) 3. Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (ESP) 3. Mario He (AUT) 4. Niels Feijen (NED) 4. Ralf Souquet (GER) 4. Ronald Regli (SUI) 4. Alexander Kazakis (GRE)
That concludes the coverage from the Dynamic Billard Portuguese Open.
DAY 2
Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. Souquet wins hill-hill thriller over Eckert
In an all-German clash between two experienced players, BCA Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet defeated Ralph Eckert in a heartbreaker with 9:8.
The match took place in the winner’s round of the men’s division of the Dynamic Billard Portuguese Open Euro-Tour. Souquet had the better odds on his side. He has been active as a player ever since whereas Eckert had taken some detours in his career. His last stop was Singapore for the recent three months where he was employed by the local billiard federation to coach their players and prepare them for the SEA Games. The match took the course as expected in the beginning. Souquet was always ahead but Eckert did not let the gap get too big. However, after 13 racks the score was 8:5 in favor of Souquet and it looked like the deal was sealed. But Eckert struck back and turned the scoreboard to 6:8. Then, Souquet missed a possible 7-ball and allowed Eckert back to the table. Accrete ran out and also ran the next rack which he broke himself. That made the match a hill-hill affair. All of a sudden it was a race to one! Souquet took a time-out, came back and broke and ran the decidin g 17th rack. He showed great nerves and performed with his usual perfection again. „I have made several mistakes in the match“, admitted Souquet, „but Ralph is a great player. We know each other for 40 years or so and it is always a challenge to compete against him, no matter how good in stroke he is“, added Souquet.
Another great match today was the encounter between newly crowned straight pool Champion Nick van den Berg (NED) and Aloysius Yapp (SIN). The player from Singapore is currently the reigning World 9-ball Champion in the junior’s division and is one of Eckert’s pupils. The match was as promising as it can get. But it was determined by several mistakes from both players. They both did not quite get on their A-game and missed more shots than usual. Being 8:6 up, van den Berg executed a jump shot and the cue ball scratched. App got to an open table with ball in hand. It was a „must“ to run this rack. But Yapp totally lost his position on the 6-ball. He attempted a safety shot but completely missed the 6-ball. This brought van den Berg back to the table and he had no problem to run the remaining balls to win the match with 9:6.
In the women’s division, unheralded Veronika Ivanovskaia (GER) defeated Monica Webb (USA) in the winner’s qualification round with 7:4. The same result was good for Simone Kuenzl (GER) to win over Katarzyna Wesolowska (POL). Local hero Vania Franco (POR) won her match with Ana Mazhirina (RUS) surprisingly with 7:6. In the loser’s round, Claudia Kunz (SUI) ended Wesolowska’s hopes for this tournament by ousting her with 7:3. Melanie Suessenguth (GER) won 7:5 over Nataliya Seroshtan (RUS) in the same round.
The tournament will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 local time with matches from loser’s round 1.
DAY 1
Click the image to view the large photograph - use "back" to return here. Teutscher got the better of He
In an exciting match in the winner’s round 1 at the Dynamic Billard Portuguese Open, Marco Teutscher (NED) trounced Mario He (AUT) with 9:7.
The match seemed to go according to He’s likings. After six racks, He had a comfortable 5:1 lead over Teutscher. He appeared to be totally in control of the match. Then suddenly, the tide turned in the match. Teutscher pulled back rack after rack and managed to get to 5:6. Then He took another rack to go up to 7 points in his account. But Teutscher had gotten some self-confidence. He ran out his racks whenever he had a good break shot. Additionally, He’s break did not seem to work anymore. After 15 racks, all of a sudden the score was 8:7 in favor of Teutscher. He was under a tremendous amount of pressure. In rack 16, He had a very unlucky situation when the 2-ball kicked the cue ball in the corner pocket. That gave ball in hand to Teutscher, who ran out and took the match with 9:7.
Dimitri Jungo (SUI) had to deal with Nick Dierckx (BEL). He was already up 8:4 when Dierckx started to remember what he was here for. he suddenly played much better and pulled two racks back from Jungo to make the score 6:8. Then, in rack 15, Dierckx had his own break shot coming up. He had some balls down but a very thin cut on the 1-ball in front of him. He missed the 1-ball by a hair’s breadth and allowed Jungo back to the table. The Swiss proved to demonstrate his class and experience and ran all remaining balls, including solving several problems which were laying on the table. 9:6 was the final result in favor of Jungo.
A total of 217 players started today in the men’s event. They came to Portugal from countries as far away as Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait or Saudi Arabia. In the women’s event, even players from the USA are present here. 48 women compete in their division.
Monica Webb (USA) won her first round match with Kristina Schagan (GER) without any problems 7:1. Marharyta Fefilava (BLR) wiped the floor with Micha Beuriot (NED) 7:3. In the Belgian sister-duel between Kamila and Diana Khodjaeva, Kamila won the match with 7:0.
The tournament will continue tomorrow morning at 09:00 local time with matches from loser’s round 1.
24 tables can be watched LIVE throughout the event on www.kozoom.com. The event will be hosted by the European Pocket Billiard Federation EPBF and organized by International Billiard Promotion, IBP.
