Unstoppable Wildman completes the double at High Wycombe

Total9Ball organised a very last minute competition held at the beautiful High Wycombe Hurricane Room. This club was chosen as the venue because just days ago they replaced all cushions and cloths on every American table therefore playing conditions were perfect.

T9B managed to attract an impressive 17 players with just 24 hours notice which was brilliant. The event was run to the T9B two times format with a new addition of the blind scotch doubles and the always popular break dish as side events.

Matches began at 11am and first up was the blind scotch 9ball event. Players were drawn with a random partner for each round. The feedback from this event was fantastic. T9B thought this side event would be a great new addition as anybody can win and also it's a great opportunity to make new friends and chat with players who you perhaps haven't spoken to before. The final was contested between Apostalis Harmas, Ashik Nathwani, Brian 'The Side-Event Specialist' Cassidy and local talent Dale Cadet. The draw was made and it paired Ashik with Brian against Apostalis and Dale. It was the team of Ashik and Brian who went on to become the first ever T9B Blind Scotch Doubles Champions collecting a trophy and £40 each for their troubles while Apostalis and Dale collecting £20 each.

Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

The main event kicked off shortly after this event finished, The draw was completed by Ashik Nathwani, Mark Parker and Steve Davison. Matches were played as race to seven racks with the handicaps added. Phil Wildman's day began against the only female entrant in the field, Gypsy Johns. This was a possible bogey match for Phil as he took on the beauty from High Wycombe. Phil began this match needing 10 racks to advance while Gypsy needed to win just 4. Phil ran out a 7v1 winner after the handicaps were taken off but he was impressed by some of Gypsy's potting and her desire to learn and improve. Del Sim didn’t look so fresh after a late night drinking session in Marlow the night before but he didn’t let that effect him in his first match as he impressively took out Tom Staveley 7v2. Mark Parker battled hard as he trailed throughout his match with Apostalis Harmas but in the end was defeated 7v6. Courtney Symons wasn’t given an easy morning by improving Jason Rosser but did squeeze through 7v5. The men of the minute, fresh from scotch doubles glory Ashik Nathwani and Brian Cassidy both advanced 7v4 defeating local players Rich Fullwell and Dale Cadet respectively.

The second side of the draw was up next... Phil Wildman showed good fighting spirit to win his match 7v5 from 5v2 down against Dale Cadet. While Mark Parker advanced past Jason Rosser 7v4. Tom Staveley got it all right in this side of the draw winning 7v3 against experienced Mark Hughes. Courtney Symons marched on with a 7v4 victory over Rich Fullwell. Del 'The Spoil Sport' Sim ended Gypsy Johns event 7v4. Lionel Brown looked bang in form as he killed Ashik Nathwani's double victory chances 7v4.

At this stage there were eight players remaining in each half of the draw. Phil Wildman again produced the goods late in his match 5v1 down to a 7v5 win result against Sean Dracup of Bristol. Courtney Symons was also showing the same fighting qualities as he fought his way out of trouble to defeat Del Sim 7v6. Ashik looked to be back to his best protecting his final life 7v2 against Apostalis Harmas. Brian Cassidy was successful against Lionel Brown, winning 7v5.

While in the other half of the draw Wildman trailed 1v4 against Del Sim but then developed a monster break that would stay with him for the rest of the event. This helped him paste Del Sim 7v4. Good friends collided in this round as Courtney Symons eliminated Tom Staveley 7v5. Mark Parker produced some supreme match play as he advanced past Shaun Dracup 7v5. Apostalis Harmas and Lionel Brown played their match of the round with Apostalis taking the match 7v6.

Now it was "Break Dish" time!!!! A brilliant £140 was collected and added to the current pot of £110 to offer the lucky picked players a shot at 10 ball, £20 a ball, with a £50 clearance bonus. The first player drawn was Phil Wildman but he broke dry. Unbelievably the second player drawn was also Phil Wildman!! This time he broke well and potted a ball but an unwanted kiss on the cue ball left him hooked. Phil took on the kick shot but it wasn't to be as he missed the tough across table kick pot. Next up was Apostalis Harmas at a reduced ball value of £5. Apostalis also failed to collect so the pot of £250 rolls over to the next Sunday series event held in Wickford on Sunday 19th October.

Back to the main competition action. It was Quarter Finals time. Wildman by this point looked at times unplayable. He took the first 6 racks against Brain Cassidy, Brian snatched a couple of racks back with good clearances, but Wildman's breaking was bang on as he posted his name in the Semi-Final bracket. Brian, after the match, commented, 'he is going to take some stopping today'. Ashik Nathwani setup an intriguing Semi Final with Wildman as he defeated Courtney Symons impressively 7v3. Mark Parker kicked Courtney while he was down in the other half of the draw 7v4. Phil Wildman was involved in a truly brilliant match with Apostalis Harmas in the last Quarter Final. Apostalis had control the whole match always leading, in fact, the first time Wildman got level on racks was at 6v6. Apostalis had the chance straight from the break in the decider but missed a tricky across table cut down the rail. This left Wildman the perfect chance to hook Apostalis which proved to be the match winning Shot as Wildman cleared the four remaining balls after the foul to put himself in both Semi-Finals 7v6.

So now just two players stood in Wildman's way as he looked to complete the double win, they were... Ashik Nathwani and Mark Parker. First up for Wildman was Ashik. This was a high class match but Wildman came out on top 7v5. In the middle of the match there were four consecutive break and runs. Wildman truly was on fire and Mark Parker was about to find that out first hand as Wildman in little time took out Parker impressively 7v2.

Wildman was the double chance Champion. This feat has only previously been completed three times in over 40 events once by Jayson Shaw in Barnsley and twice by Mark Parker in Basildon and High Wycombe.

Any amateur players wanting to get involved in some T9B action don’t have to wait long as our next event is this Saturday (27th September) in St Albans, It's Amateur Series Event 9.

Thanks to High Wycombe Hurricane Room for having us and sponsoring us the tables for the day, also to Kim Rowett for running the tournament desk, to Mark Parker for the action photos and to all the players who supported this event.

Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.
