The Twomey Run Away Train Steams on

So the Total9Ball Amateur Series is back with the 2013/14 edition and it looks better than ever. T9B this season added Dynamic Billiards to the ever growing list of sponsors who are offering Euro Tour places so the opportunity is there for players to not only compete at the beautiful Hurricane Room club in St Albans but perhaps in other locations around Europe this season.

28 players headed for St Albans yesterday for event one of the ten event series. Matches remained as a race to seven with all players being assigned a handicap ranging from -3 to +3. Each player who enters a T9B Amateur Series event gets entered into the draw twice and is therefore hoping to win all matches to meet themselves in the Final, if a player achieves this not only do they scoop the Winners and Runners up prize money but they will also receive the accumulated jackpot prize which increases at each event and currently stands at an impressive £150. Matches began at 10am and there seemed to be a tense atmosphere as each player was obviously hoping to start the season well and score some good early ranking points.

Richard Twomey (The Twominater) took the final T9B event of last season... The Masters which was an event of single elimination and races to 14. Richard looked completely at home during this event but could he produce the same form over this event with shorter races? Twomey completed round one without defeat but only by the skin of his teeth as Karim Moloo pushed him all the way only to ended up falling one rack short losing 7-6, Karim is a relatively new player to T9B events however he is looking better and better at each event he attends and I’m sure it won’t be long before Moloo gets to a Final of an event or even better wins one. Twomey had a bye in his other match so kept his two lives after round one.

Courtney Symons is Total9ball’s most successful player with five tournament wins under his belt and he began the 2013/14 campaign well defeating Steve Davison 7-5, Courtney also had a bye in the second half of the draw. Paul Mcmicheal held his nerve to beat an in form Paul Taylor 7-6 while T9B owner Phil Wildman defied the odds bravely battling back from 5v-1 down against Tony Burton to win 7-6. Tom Staveley continues to cram the hours in on the practice table at his Hurricane Room club in Kings Cross and the practice is really paying off as he is now making few mistakes and consistently performing well at T9B events. Staveley was pushed to the limit in his first match against new T9B player Mike Dixon, Tom prevailed 7-6 which setup two matches against Phil Wildman from Reading, Tom played some pretty non stoppable 9 ball pool as he ended Phils event 7-4, 7-2. It was great to have Dean Mazerel back involved in our events and he seemed to still have all the skills and knowledge after nearly a year away from the table. Dean produced an impressive 7v2 win over Sunny Garib and followed this with a tense 7-6 win over Paul Taylor, two confidence boasting results for Dean however it was an unlucky day for Paul Taylor losing both his matches on hill-hill deciders however Paul is a very good amateur player and I’m sure he will bounce back to winning ways at our next event. Karim Moloo as mentioned earlier is improving with every event and said, ‘I can’t wait until I play in one of these events and really show what I can do’ well Karim a 7v1 win over Mark Parker is a very impressive result.

On to round two and there were many players with both chances remaining. The match of the round involved in my opinion the two best players involved in the event Courtney Symons and Richard Twomey. Richard looked to be very sharp and making the most of his limited chances winning this clash 7-4, Richard buoyed by this good result followed it with a 7-1 win over new face Micky Mullins. Micky was competing in his first ever 9ball event, He said ‘this event was an eye opener for me… 9ball when your just knocking around seems easy however when your involved in a tournament and under a bit of pressure against good players it’s not as easy as it looks’ Micky went on to say ‘I truly enjoyed the event and I'll certainly be back for more in the future’.

Could anybody stop Richard ‘The Ipswich shot maker" Twomey? Courtney Symons now down to one chance had a battle during the early stages against Paul Mcmichael as the players shared racks to 4-4 but then Paul couldn’t keep up with the pace and Courtney prevailed 7v4. Tony Fry was going strong in the early rounds remaining undefeated through his first four matches, his second round victories were both by 7-4 results over Dave Evans and Tony David. T9B Rookie Champion Jaspal Bamotra reached the third round with both chances still intact, Jazz held his nerve to beat Rattapol Sassman 7-6 but had a more convincing 7-2 win against Richard Twomey's traveling companion Terry Arnold. Dean Mazerel again looked to be striking the ball very well as he despatched Karim Moloo 7-1 and Mark Parker 7-3.

The round of the last 16 was where all players chances of taking today's £500 jackpot were dashed. Courtney Symons defeated his friend Tom Staveley 7-6. Tom said, ‘I had a great chance to win this match at hill-hill but didn’t take it and I knew Courtney wouldn’t give me another chance’. Staveley did get it right in his other match of this round beating Tony 7-5, this took one of Tony’s two chances and unfortunately Tony was on the receiving end of a 7-4 result against Rattapol Sassmann and therefore Tony’s event was ended. Jaspal Bamotra's record of results in this round was won one and lost one, Bamotra produced some fine 9ball pool beating Rich Twomey 7-4 but was then defeated 7-5 by Dave Evans. Dean Mazerel’s comeback event was about to be ended with two straight defeats Richard Twomey was back to winning ways with a 7-3 result against Mazerel and Sunny Garib took revenge beating Dean 7v4 after Mazerel had beaten Sunny 7-2 earlier in the event. Matt Hawthorne reached the last 16 for the first time at a T9B event but was undone by Paul Mcmichael 7-4.

So the Quarter Finalists were now known and as you can see below the line-up looked very strong

Courtney Symons 1 – 7 Dave Evans
Richard Twomey 7 – 4 Rattapol Sassmann
Jaspal Bamotra 7 – 6 Paul Mcmichael
Tom Staveley 5 – 7 Sunny Garib

By this point the plate was well underway, Phil Wildman got the better of Micky Mullins in the semi-final while Kev Kellerher defeated Paul Choonge in the other Semi-Final. Phil went on to beat Kev in the final of the plate 7-4

The serious stuff though was being played in the semi-finals of the main comp. Richard Twomey according to Dave Evans got everything right and made no mistakes as Rich ran out a 7-3 winner and advanced to the final. While on the table next door Jaspal Bamotra and Sunny Garib were involved in a thriller… at 6-6 both players missed chances to win before Jaspal converted the last four balls to win 7-6.

Richard Twomey and Jaspal Bamotra decided to split the prize money and play a one rack shoot-out for the beautiful glass trophy, a few safety shots were played before faultless Twomey cleared the balls to lift yet another T9B trophy.

Richard Twomey really is playing some remarkable 9ball currently and looks almost unbeatable. Winning the last two major T9B events is some achievement. Can he complete a hatrick in the next event? Or do you think you can stop him? Make sure your there at our next event to help us stop the Twomey Train.

For Event 2 the Breakdish pot will increase to £130 and the Jackpot to £200 this on top of the normal prize money means event two is not to be missed.

Thanks to our Sponsors, Dynamic Billiards, Kamui, www.Pro9.co.uk, Sanctuary Cues and Ultimate Breakmasters. Also to St Albans Hurricane Room for the use wants again of their awesome venue. To Nicole Hansen for minding the tournament desk and to Mark Parker for his help during the event and for taking some photos of the players in action.

Full results and ranking will be available on our website www.t9b.co.uk from Monday… be sure to check these out and also all players match win/lose and rack win/lose stats are available

The next T9B events are as follows:

Saturday 12th Sept – High Wycombe Hurricane Room – Old Skool Pool – No Magic racks, No 3 point rule and Winner breaks its back to the old rules baby

Saturday 19th Sept – St Albans Hurricane Room – Scotch Doubles event – already 14 teams have entered this is sure to be a fun and interesting event as players play alternate shots. Can you handle the pressure of playing for you partner to? Enter now to compete.

About The Tour

The new Total9ball season is here and the Amateur Series is back for its 5th successive season and we must say it looks better than ever. During the close season T9B have secured a fantastic new sponsor of Dynamic Billiards. We are proud to have Dynamic Billiards on board and I’m sure you the players will enjoy the enhancements this sponsorship deal will add to an already brilliant series. Adding Dynamic Billiards to our superb current sponsors Hurricane Room, Kamui, Sanctuary Cues, Rileys and Ultimate Breakmasters shows The T9B Amateur Series is clearly the UK's biggest and best. Make sure your apart of this season, I promise you wont be disappointed.

Last season we used the 2x double chance format for a second season and again it worked very well with players gaining the maximum value money and getting the opportunity to play 9ball using one of the most fresh and exciting formats to ever hit UK 9Ball. This season we have decide to stick with the popular format and expect this season to be more popular than ever.

The T9B 2x Format

T9B double chance events seem to be the most popular format we use, we believe the reason behind this is because it offers unbeatable value, players are entered into the draw twice which means players can lose a match but still be the overall winner of the tournament, it guarantees each player a minimum of two tense knock-out matches and also means each entrance has the opportunity to get in the prize money twice. Feedback regarding these event has always been brilliant and therefore we feel using this format is the way to get the most players involved. Win all your matches and you can collect the Winners and Runners up prize money... a very nice days work. A beautiful glass trophy is awarded to the winner of each event and also to the overall winner of the rankings after the five event series.

Side Events

The break dish will continue as a roll up. The break dish roll up was first used at T9B events last season and as it wasn’t won the pot has now accrued to £100, this amount will increase each event until it is won. Raffle tickets will be sold at each event for £1 for 3 tickets. All money collected will be added to the pot. After the first round of matches two tickets will be drawn at random, the first player drawn will have the opportunity to break and dish the balls to take the pot. If unsuccessful the second player will get the opportunity, if the second player also fails the pot will roll over to the following event.

Rules

**A legal 3point break must be made
**If a player makes a Golden break or combos the 9ball into the pocket, the 9ball will be placed on its spot and the player will continue his turn.

The Series will begin on 28th September 2013 and will consist of ten 9ball double chance events , a mid season Grand Final and an end of season Grand Final. Each event will be held at St Albans Hurricane Room with matches beginning at 10am sharp. Players must understand that while they are in the tournament twice still there may not be much of a break in between games.
