Important victory for the young Turkish North Cyprus player

Thursday, 06 December 2012 With a fantastic performance, Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) made it to the semi-final of the WPA World 9-Ball Championships. He defeated Joshua Filler (GER) with 9:5.

Filler was undefeated in the competition so far. He was actually the favourite player to win the match. But Mehmetcik seemed to be more focussed. Filler had several slips which Mehmetcik transformed into points for his account. After Filler was trailing 2:5, he fought back and closed the gap to 4:5. Then, in the 10th rack, he forced Mehmetcik to commit a foul.

"Read More..." for the details.

Instead of running out, he tried to bank the 8-ball and missed it. He just played too fast. Maybe it was nervousness, but Mehmetcik accepted the gift and took the rack. From then on, Mehmetcik took the helm and dominated the match. He won 9:5 and will play the semi-final tomorrow morning.

The semi-final matches that are played tomorrow morning at 11:00 CET are:

Juniors:
Cheng.Chieh Liu TPE v Berk Mehmetcik TNC
Tobias Bongers GER v Moritz Lauwereyns BEL

Girls:
Karen Garcia NIC v Kamila Khodjaeva BEL
Szu-Ting Kuo TPE v Oliwia Czuprynska POL

Wheelchair:
Jouni Tahti FIN v Roy Kimberley GBR
Henrik Larsson SWE v Fred Dinsmore IRE

Drama between Kuo and Khodjaeva

Close decision in the girls division

Thursday, 06 December 2012 In a real thriller match, Szu-Ting Kuo (TPE) remained the upper hand over Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) with a close 7:6 victory.

Both girls met in the winner’s qualification round. Both of them had already two victories under their belt. It promised to be an exciting match. Kuo had some advantages from the very beginning.

She seemed more secure in what she was doing. She was able to gain a two rack advantage over Khodjaeva and maintain that over a long time. 3:1, 4:2, 5:3 and even 6:4 was her lead in the meantime.

But Khodjaeva, last year’s runner-up, is known to be a fighter who never gives up. She won the 11th rack by running I out and closed the gap to 5:6. In the next rack she even forced Kuo to commit three consecutive fouls and tied the match at hill-hill, 6:6. In the 13th and final rack, Khodjaeva had the break shot. She made three balls and had a promising layout. She ran all balls and had a good position for the 9-ball. But to the dismay of all of her supporters, she missed the deciding 9-ball. However, she got lucky and did not leave a shot for Kuo. The Asian tried to play safe but left a makeable shot for Khodjaeva. Kamila Khodjaeva had a second chance… and dogged the 9-ball again. Now Kuo got to the table and finished the match, winning 7:6. Kuo is now qualified for the semi-final while Khodjaeva needs one more win on the loser’s side to join her there.

Other notable results include defending Champion Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) losing to Karen Garcia (NIC) with 5:7. She also needs to win another match on the loser’s side in order to get to the semi-finals.

In the wheelchair division, no upsets took place. Defending Champion Jouni Tahti (FIN) clearly defeated Fred Dinsmore (IRE) 7:2 while Henrik Larsson (SWE) won his match 7:4 over Tony Southern (GBR).

In the juniors division, Meshaal-Turkki Al-Ali (QAT) ousted Raphael Wahl (GER) with 9:6.

Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) defeated Shonosuke Komiya with 9:7. Jui-An Hsu (TPE) ended all hopes of Ignacio Garcia (ARG) 9:6.

Larsson comes out on top of Volkmer

Favourites make their way in wheelchair division

Wednesday, 05 December 2012 7:5 was the end result in favour of Henrik Larsson (SWE) when he finished his match with Tankred Volkmer (GER).

Larsson, who came in second last year, was definitely considered to be the clearly favoured player for this match. But Volkmer seemed to like his role being the underdog. Maybe that was one of the reasons why the match did not turn out as clearly as expected. To the opposite, Volkmer kept the distance to Larsson always very small. After four racks, the score was 2:2. Larsson took his time-out and tried to get back on track. But he could not get a big advantage over Volkmer.

The German even took a 4:3 lead in the meantime. That could have been the wakeup call for Larsson. The Swede won the next three racks and went on the hill, creating some huge pressure for Volkmer. At a score of 4:6 against him, Volkmer was able to snatch one more rack off Larsson.

Then Larsson ended all of Volkmer’s hopes to win this match. He took another rack and won the match 7:5. With this victory, Larsson remains on the winner’s side while Volkmer needs to fight his way through the loser’s bracket now.

The defending Champion Jouni Tahti (FIN) also won his second match of the day, beating Matej Brajkovic (SLO) 7:1.

In the girls division, defending Champion Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) won 7:5 over Ana Gradisnik (SLO). Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL) wrestled Brianna Miller (USA) down with 7:4.

Mehmetcik ousts Guimond

Losers bracket claims first victims

Wednesday, 05 December 2012 In the first losers round, Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) eliminated Charles Guimond (CAN) from the World Championships with 9:3.

Mehmetcik dominated the match from the very beginning. He
seemed to be more hungry and aggressive than his opponent.

Probably that was the reason why he missed some easy shots; he just played too fast. But Guimond was not able to capitalize from that. After six racks, Mehmetcik was leading 5:1. And in the 7th rack, he did not even allow Guimond to enter the table. He ran the rack and claimed a comfortable 6:1 lead, Suddenly it seemed as if Guimond had realized that he was about to leave the World Championship stage soon. He won two racks in a row and it looked like he was up for some more resistance. But Mehmetcik was too strong for him. At a score of 8:3 for Mehmetcik, the player from Turkish North Cyprus pocketed the 8-ball and the 9-ball at the same time and ousted Guionond from the event, winning 9:3.

Another surprising result was the victory of Meshaal-Turkii Al-Ali (QAT). He defeated Christiano Bloemstein (RSA) with 9:5 and will now face Raphael Wahl (GER) in the next round.

In the wheelchair division, the defending Champion Jouni Tahti (FIN) led up to his expectations and defeated Emil Schranz (AUT) 7:3. After a tough fight, Joachim Schuler (GER) won his match over Daniel Luton (GBR) with 7:6.

Brianna Miller showed a great game

Brianna Miller (USA)    Foto: EPBF/AMM

Tough opening match for US player

Wednesday, 05 December 2012 In the first round of the girls division of the WPA World 9-Ball Championships, Brianna Miller (USA) defeated Kate Polovinchuk (UKR) with 7:5.

In the beginning the match seemed to be pretty one-sided. Miller played more focussed and solid and was able to gain a clear advantage over Polovinchuk. After 5 racks the score was 4:1 in favour of Miller. In the 6th rack, she even had to extend her lead to 5:1.

Polovinchuk committed a foul and Miller got to the table with ball in hand and only 5 balls remaining on the table. Whether it was carelessness or pretension can only be guessed here; as a matter of fact, Miller ran out of position for the 7-ball and then missed it. Polovinchuk accepted the gift and turned the score to 4:2. This error from Miller was obviously exactly what Polovinchuk needed. She won the next two racks and tied the match at 4:4. Now the match turned into a thriller. Miller seemed to have lost her easiness but kind of got back on track with her performance. Polovinchuk was a better match now and the competition between the two got to a good quality level. In the 9th rack, Miller took the lead with 5:4, only to commit another slip in the next rack. Polovinchuk penalized her without showing any mercy and tied the match again to 5:5. Then, Polovinchuk broke the balls, made the 7-ball and missed a tough shot on the 1-ball. Hard to believe, but that was her last visit to the table in that match. Miller ran the rack and the next one in order to win the match 7:5.

Other notable results include Clinton Nair (RSA) winning 9:5 over Charles Guimont (CAN). Finn Eschment (GER) was able to beat Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) with 9:7. The only German player who lost his opening match was Jan-Henrik Wolf. He had to give in to teammate Raphael Wahl with 5:9.

The event is hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) in conjunction with the WPA and organized by International Billiard Promotion (IBP).
