Hot Shot Vaughan Is T9B Champion 2012

Total9Ball held it's Grand Finals for the 2012 Amateur 2x Series on Saturday 1st December at St Albans Hurricane Room, There were a few extra additions to this event with Lee Rigby from GB9 streaming the event with commentary, players were announced to the table with a song of their choice and interviewed before the Semi Finals and Final, and also the format to the tournament used mixed disciplines of 9 and 10ball.

Four Qualifying events were held over the past few months as a build up to the main Grand Final event, players who were ranked 1-16 after these 4 events were invited to play in this fantastic event. The format used was the 2X format but this time with a twist... All 16 qualifiers were seeded by the overall rankings - in one side of the draw where the 9ball discipline was used and randomly drawn into the second half of the draw where the game was 10ball.

Total9Ball - Gary Bullocke vs. Paul Summerfield.

So as you can see from below there were some top amateur players in action and it was sure to be an event to be remembered. Before the event began T9B founder Phil Wildman awarded Gary Bullocke with a trophy for being the overall winner of the rankings, so where better to start than with Gary Bullocke on the live stream - his opponent was Paul Summerfield, a last minute replacement for Paul Taylor who unfortunately couldn’t attend this event.

The Seedings
1st Seeds

1 Gary Bullocke
2 Ramesh Gokhul
3 Courtney Symons
4 Phillip Wildman
5 Mark Parker
6 Wayne Rooke
7 Luke Rollison
8 Mark Hughes
2nd Seeds

9 Shakz Islam
10 Jonathan Vaughan
11 Chris Buckmaster
12 Darren Saxby (Replaced G.Esprit)
13 Mikko Tuomi
14 Dave Mccarthy
15 Tom Staveley
16 Paul Summerfield (Replaced P.Taylor)

The discipline was 9ball, and the result was 7-0 to Bullocke, so a great start to the day for him, perhaps the cameras played their part in unnerving Paul, as well as some great shot making by "Bullseye Bullocke".

This result wasn’t the only 7-0 of the round as Mark Hughes looked to be back on song as he whitewashed Shakz Islam. Jonathan Vaughan began his Grand Final against one of the favourites Luke Rollison, The matched ended 7-5 to Vaughan and it was fair to say Vaughan hadn’t traveled from Neath, South Wales to make the numbers up - he was here to win!

Other results in the 9ball side of the draw included a 7-2 win for Wildman against Mikko Tuomi, Dave McCarthy was on the wrong side of a 7-5 scoreline against, in my opinion, the best amateur in the UK at the moment Courtney Symons. Mark Parker finished up a 7-6 winner against Darren Saxby after a fluke on the final 9ball. Ramesh Gokhul and Chris Buckmaster had to battle back from behind in their opening matches but both did end up in round two.

Total9Ball - Ramesh Gokhul vs. Tom Stavely.

The 10 ball side of the draw saw some matches in the opening round that could easily be the final on another day, Rollison 7v4 Symons being the first and Gary Bullocke 7v3 Ramesh Gokhul the second. Shakz Islam forgot about his earlier 7v0 defeat and played very well on the stream table to beat qualifying Event 4 Winner Mark Parker 7-5, Tom Staveley won a hill-hill match against Dave McCarthy. Paul Summerfield looked to be turning his day around beating Wayne Rooke 7-5. Wayne was still busy counting coins after dropping the £250 jackpot on a fruit machine minutes before his match was called. Nicknamed JV Jonathan Vaughan ended Mikko Tuomi’s tournament with a 7-4 victory.

The winners of the next matches in both sides of the draw were guaranteed £50 in prize money, the results are listed below with handicaps

Jonathan Vaughan -1
7 : 3
Tom Staveley -1
Phil Wildman -2
7 : 3
Paul Summerfield

So after this round of results it was only Phil Wildman who had the chance to become ‘The Undefeated’ by winning all matches and therefore winning the Winners and Runners Up Prize money a cool total of £750 not bad for a one day event with only 16 players. So all players still in the event were now going to collect a minimum of £50 except Phil who was on £100 as 2x £50.

Total9Ball - Chris Buckmaster vs. Luke Rollison.

Players in the next round were looking to boost their day's earnings to £125 and be a step closer to being T9B Champion 2012. Phil Wildman took on Gary Bullocke in the Quarter Finals. Phil missed a 9ball at 5-5 to take him to the hill, Gary now with a 6-5 advantage missed a long shot but felt he was rushed into the shot by another player standing over him, Phil potted the remaining 4 balls and broke dished at hill-hill to win the match 7v6. Symons vs Gokhul lived up to its billing, Symons mainly on top throughout the match, although Gokhul did launch a late comeback - but probably the shot of the day was a jump shot by Courtney with draw for position leaving a couple of simple pots - the end result Symons 7 Gokhul 4.

Chris Buckmaster put in a top performance against Luke Rollison winning 7-4 on the streaming table, the commentary was done by Courtney/Ramash, the match is well worth a watch and the commentary is worth a listen too. Watch out for your jobs BBC commentators!

The table opposite was one way traffic as Jonathan Vaughan from Neath was doing Wales proud as he steamrolled a tired looking Wildman 7v2 meaning the comp now had only 4 players and nobody was still in the event twice.

FINAL 1 - Jonny Vaughn vs. Chris Buckmaster.

Both Semi Finals were streamed and players were introduced to the table by Lee Rigby to a choice of music and flashing lights. First up was Vaughan against Buckmaster, this match was close but JV had the upper hand for the majority of the match and ran out a 7-5 winner booking his place in the Final - a great achievement in his first year of playing 9/10ball.

FINAL 2 - Phil Wildman vs. Courtney Symons.

The other Semi Final was between Wildman and Symons, Wildman took a 3 rack lead but Symons battled back, the match went the whole way to Hill-Hill, both players looked tense but both had maximum desire to win. Symons over hit a shot and had to play safe, Wildman kicked out of and fluked a full ball snooker, Symons kicked out hard hoping for a bit of luck but it ended over the pocket. This was Wildman's chance to reach the final, he potted the ball over the pocket but missed the next ball. Courtney looked shocked to be back at the table, with three balls remaining Courtney must have taken his eye off the shot and rattled the ball in the bottom right pocket, Wildman composed himself and potted the last three balls to reach the Final.

The choice of discipline for the Final was decided by Vaughan as he gained a better result in the Semi Finals and his choice was 10 ball - a game he had already beaten Wildman from Reading at earlier in the event. The final was played much the same as the earlier match with Vaughan leading all the way through. Jonathan made a few more mistakes than in the early match but was playing the better pool and ended up winning 7v4.

Jonathan Vaughan Total9Ball Champion 2012.

THE GRAND FINAL - Jonathan Vaughan vs. Philip Wildman + pre-match interviews.

This, for me, was one of the best Total9ball events run to date. The event ran very smoothly as usual, so thanks to Nicole for running the tournament desk. The streaming was of very high quality so thank you very much Lee Rigby for making the journey to us, we really appreciate it. To www.Pro9.co.uk asl this is our chief source of promoting these events. To Big Dave for attending the events and taking the photographs. To all the players who have supported this series and those who helped out commentating, and last but not least, to St Albans Hurricane Room who always play great host and let us use the facilities at no charge.

I'm currently planning the 2013 series, the details should be available shortly, I hope you will all support the 2013 series and it will be as good if not better than the 2012 edition.
