The winner and new #1 ranked player: Nick van den Berg (NED) Foto: EPBF/AMM

“El Nino” takes the title

Saturday, 10 November 2012: The winner of the 2012 Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012 is Nick van den Berg from The Netherlands. He defeated Fabio Petroni (ITA) with 11:5 in the final match.

The final was probably the most entertaining match of the whole tournament. Both players demonstrated pool billiards to its perfection.

However, van den Berg had the better break shot and his game seemed to be a bit more consistent than Petroni’s. And it was proven to be true. In the 12th rack, Petroni made no ball on the break and van den Berg ran that rack and his next one and took a three-point lead over Petroni. The Italian never recovered from that and in the end could not win one more rack. 11:5 was the final result for van den Berg who not only won this event but also finished this season as the #1 ranked player on the Euro-Tour rankings.

“In the beginning of the season, I set a goal to myself: I really wanted to win this Tour this year”, said van den Berg, “I finished third last year and second the year before so I had this goal throughout the season.” “In the beginning of this tournament, David and Albin had a good lead on me so I knew I had to reach at least the semi-final or even final in order to win the Tour.” “I played very good in the final and I figured out the break shot. While most of the other players struggled with it, I knew how to break. That probably made the difference in this final match as well”.

Dynamic Billiards European Women's Ranking Event
- Martine Christiansen wins the title in the Women’s tournament

Martine Christiansen (NOR)    Foto: EPBF/AMM

Close final victory over Ina Kaplan

Sunday, 11 November 2012: In a tight final match, Martine Christiansen (NOR) defeated Ina Kaplan (GER) with 7:6 and won the title of the Dynamic Billiards Women’s Euro-Tour Treviso Open 2012.

It would not be fair to say that one player was better than the
other. Both players played very solid throughout the tournament. They both seemed to struggle a bit with the different conditions on the TV table. Christiansen’s break was better and more consistent. Kaplan had a few dry breaks and could not really get momentum as she did during her previous matches. In the end, a nail-biting finish took place and Christiansen had the better end in her favour, taking the rack, the match and the title with 7:6.

“It could have been the other way around”, said a modest Christiansen after the final. “I was very relaxed in the final up until the very last rack”, said Christiansen, “then all my nerves started hitting on me.” “I knew I was having a really hard time if I wanted to win this match because Ina has played very strong in this tournament.” “In the final, Ina missed a couple of makeable balls which gave me the possibility to capitalize from.” “I am really happy and I cannot believe I have won this great tournament”, said a proud Martine Christiansen in the end with a smile.

Top Eight Finishers:
1. Martine Christiansen NOR 1250,-€ 500
2. Ina Kaplan GER 950,-€ 400
3. Ine Helvik NOR 700,-€ 320
3. Ana Majirina RUS 700,-€ 320

Dynamic Billiards European Women's Ranking Event - Helvik ousts Vietz in a thriller

Quarter-final matches played

Sunday, 11 November 2012: In a tight quarter-final match, Ine Helvik (NOR) came out on top of Jennifer Vietz (GER) with 7:6.

The Dynamic Billiards Women Euro-Tour Treviso Open provided some interesting matches in the quarter-final round. Ine Helvik had to deal with Jennifer Vietz. Helvik opened her account and started to score but Vietz did not allow her to get away at all.

Every shot was well planned and carefully executed. No wonder, since both women played on the same level and could not afford to let the opponent get away too far. Consequently, the match went over the full distance of 13 racks. Helvik took the lead in the match three times while Vietz was able to lead the way twice. Vietz was on the hill first and put a tremendous amount of pressure on Helvik. But the Norwegian handled that and tied the match at 6:6, just to win another rack and make her way into the semi-final of the event. She will meet her compatriot Martine Christiansen who defeated Natalya Seroshtan (RUS) with 7:2.

The other semi-final will be played between Ina Kaplan (GER) and Ana Majirina (RUS). Kaplan took out Barbara Bolfelli (ITA) with 7:2 while Majirina ended all hopes of Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) 7:5 in the previous round.

The event is hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) and organized by International Billiard Promotion (IBP). Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012 - “Fabulous” Fabio Petroni makes it to the final

Fabio Petroni (ITA) Foto: EPBF/AMM

Local hero prevailed over Alcaide

Saturday, 10 November 2012: “Fabulous” Fabio Petroni (ITA) defeated David Alcaide (ESP) after a tough fight with 11:9.

Petroni got the better start in the match and lived up to his earlier performance. He creamed Tomasz Kaplan (POL) with 11:7 in the quarterfinal. Alcaide had to go the full distance and slightly won with 11:10 over Albin Ouschan. Maybe that was one of the reasons why Petroni left the impression to be more focussed and more ambitious than Alcaide. The Spaniard played far below his possibilities in the semi-final and missed unusually many balls.

Still, Alcaide could keep the match open for six racks to a score of 3:3. Then, Petroni benefitted from Alcaide’s mistakes and got a 6:3 lead. Alcaide tried to stay in the game but his performance was simply not good enough against Petroni. After 17 racks, Petroni was on the hill leading 10:7. Then, Alcaide went down to the wire and won another two racks to come to a 9:10. However, Petroni kept his nerves together and won the final rack, taking the match with 11:9.

The second semi-final match between Nick van den Berg (NED) and Radoslaw Babica (POL) was by far not as thrilling due to the many mistakes that Babica committed. He missed four easy shots in the early stage of the match and never recovered from that. Van den Berg consequently capitalized from that and got an advantage that Babica could not close anymore. In the end, one got the feeling that Babica had already given up. 11:3 was the clear end-result in favour of van den Berg.

Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012 - Surprising results in Treviso

Karlo Dalmatin (CRO) Foto: EPBF/AMM

Souquet ousted by Alcaide

Saturday, 10 November 2012: Today’s single elimination started with several upsets. Karlo Dalmatin (CRO) eliminated Mario He (AUT) unexpectedly high with 11:5 from the Dynamic Billiards European Open.

On paper, bookmakers would have probably clearly favoured Mario He in this match. But Dalmatin has proven in his performance here so far that he is ready for something big. Up to the score of 3:3, the match was equal. Both players played levelled and that was already an achievement for Dalmatin. After six racks, Dalmatin seemed to shift into overdrive. He came up with a great performance and left few to no chances for He. Mario He, not able to keep the pace with Dalmatin, managed to win two more racks. That was it for him. Dalmatin took the match with 11:5 off He and will now have to deal with Poland’s Radoslaw Babica in the quarter-final.

Another victim of this round was BCA Hall of Famer Ralf Souquet (GER). He just got smashed by Spain’s David Alcaide with 11:3. Local hero Fabio Petroni (ITA) remained the upper hand over Germany’s Oliver Ortmann and proceeded with 11:8 to the next round. Nr. 1 ranked player Albin Ouschan (AUT) who was almost out and just crossed the finish line with 9:8 over Marcus Chamat last night, played like a total different person today. He beat Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) with 11:6. The Dutch teammates Nick van den Berg and Marc Bijsterbosch both won their matches and will have to play each other in the upcoming quarterfinals.

In the first round of the women’s Euro-Tour, no upsets took place. Ana Majirina (RUS) defeated Kim Witzel (GER) 7:4. Long-time regular Louise Furberg (SWE) left no chance for her teammate Jessika Nilsson and sent her with 7:1 to the left side of the draw.

Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012 - Chinakhov through to last 16

Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) Foto: EPBF/AMM

Jentsch and Gray out

Friday, 09 November 2012: Ruslan Chinakhov (RUS) creamed Denis Grabe (EST) with 9:4 and will play tomorrow in the single elimination stage.

For a long time, Chinakhov was not able to score at a Euro-Tour event. Maybe the Dynamic Billiards European Open changes that for him. He started out at a tremendous speed and took a quick 5:0 lead over Grabe. Grabe missed the early phase of the match and never got the chance to get back. Chinakhov’s performance was simply too strong for him today.

Tomorrow’s round of the final 16 players starts at 10:00 local time. Together with them, the first round of the women’s tournament will begin.

Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012 - Terrific performance by van den Berg

Nick van den Berg (NED) Foto: EPBF/AMM

“El Nino” destroys Kazakis

Friday, 09 November 2012: In the winner’s qualification round of the Dynamic Billiards European Open, “El Nino” Nick van den Berg (NED) left no chance for his opponent Alexander Kazakis (GRE) and destroyed him with 9:4.

Kazakis is currently in a good form. He just became third in the Kremlin Cup in Moscow and he had two strong victories under his belt in this event already when he entered into the match with van den Berg. He even got a quick 3:0 lead and things seemed to roll his way, not van den Berg’s way. But then the tide turned and van den Berg grew stronger. He overtook Kazakis and at the score of 4:3 for van den Berg, Kazakis scratched on his break which gave van den Berg the chance to get away with 5:3. “I think that was the turning point in the match”, said van den Berg afterwards. “I was a bit unlucky in the beginning but I handled it differently than him”. After that, Kazakis never got back into his rhythm and van den Berg took the match with 9:4. “The difference was probably the experience. I know that he is a great player who currently is on a good roll. I expected it was going to be a tight match.” “When I got unlucky in the beginning of the match, I stayed calm and changed things. When he got unlucky, he became frustrated. That’s probably the reason why I won the match so clearly” analysed van den Berg. “The key shot in the match was when I led 5:3 and fell out of position and had to get the cue ball right on the spot which I did and ran the rack. That probably was too much for him”. Nick van den Berg has reached the single elimination stage of the event which starts tomorrow morning, 10:00 CET. Alexander Kazakis will have the chance at 21:00 CET tonight to join him by winning his next match in the loser’s qualification round.

Other notable results from that round include David Alcaide (ESP) thrashing Denis Grabe (EST) with 9:2. Nick Ekonomopoulos (GRE) defeated “Fabulous” Fabio Petroni (ITA) by an eyelash with 9:8. Mario He (AUT) remained victorious over Ralf Souquet (GER) with 9:8.

Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012 - Local hero Petroni stayed on top of Ouschan

Fabio Petroni (ITA) Foto: EPBF/AMM

Italy’s top player sent nr. 1 ranked player to the loser’s side

Friday, 09 November 2012: Fabio Petroni (ITA), probably the most experienced and successful Italian player, just eliminated current #1 ranked player Albin Ouschan (AUT) from the winner’s side of the Dynamic Billiards European Open in Treviso, Northern Italy.

Playing on one’s home turf can be an advantage or not. For Petroni, it seems to be an energy boost. Whenever he performs in Italy, he is hard to predict. Today, Euro-Tour ranking leader Ouschan was his victim in the first winner’s round of the double elimination stage. Petroni performed solid and played very ambitious. He fought fiercely and got a quick 3:1 lead over Ouschan. But the Austrian is not the #1 in Europe by accident. He started a strong comeback on Petroni and even managed to overtake the Italian, taking a 6:5 lead. Then again, it was Petroni to show nerves and good shooting and he made four more racks, seizing the match with 9:6 off Ouschan. Ouschan will go to the loser’s side while Petroni needs to win one more match over Ekonomopoulos on the winner’s side in order to qualify for tomorrow’s single elimination stage.

Other notable results include Daryl Peach (GBR) winning with 9:8 over Dimitri Jungo (SUI). Senior player Vegar Kristiansen (NOR), a former regular on the European pool scene, rocked the boat by winning 9:8 over Roman Hybler (CZE). Denis Grabe (EST) defeated two British players in two consecutive rounds: first he took care of Richard Jones with 9:2. Then he also defeated Jones’ roommate Mark Gray (GBR) with 9:5. Poland’s Konrad Piekarski won 9:6 over Germany’s Dominic Jentsch. Since the format is still double elimination, no player from today’s competition is out of the tournament yet. The loser’s still have one chance on the loser’s side to qualify for the single elimination tomorrow.

Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012 - Aarts through to next stage

Ivo Aarts (NED)    Foto: EPBF/AMM

Round robin stage ended with few surprises

Thursday, 08 November 2012: Ivo Aarts (NED) secured a spot for him in the top 64 players of the Dynamic Billiards European Open by creaming Damianos Giallourakis (GRE) with 9:6.

Aarts and Giallourakis had both lost their respective first match to David Alcaide (ESP) who was the seeded player in the group. So the match turned out to be a “do or die” for the two contestants. From the very beginning, Aarts dominated the match and left no doubts to his opponent that he was ready for the fight. He took a quick 4:1 and 6:3 lead over Giallourakis. He even managed to get to 8:3 and everything looked like smooth sailing for the young Dutch. But then Giallourakis struck back and closed the gap a bit. At a score of 8:6 for Aarts, he made the final point he needed to make it to tomorrow’s competition and sent his opponent home.

Huidji See (NED), the current World 10-ball Champion, won his match over Denis Grabe (EST) with 9:7. However, since all three players in that group have won one match, the decision had to come through the secondary scores. Denis Grabe had the best quota so he was through.

See and Mark Gray (GBR) had the same quota so the direct match between the two had to come into account. Since Gray defeated See, he qualified for the next stage while See is on his way home.

Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012 - Peach almost broke speed record

Mateusz Sniegocki (POL)    Foto: EPBF/AMM

Most favourites won their group matches

Thursday, 08 November 2012: Daryl Peach (GBR) seems to be following in the footsteps of Tony Drago with his performance.

The former 9-ball World Champion defeated Elio Del Sarto (ITA) with 9:4 in 55 minutes and then Elvis Ambord (SUI) 9:0 in unbelievable 27 minutes! Peach seemed to be unstoppable today.

Polish Mateusz Sniegocki was not much slower than him. He defeated Roman Yaroshenko (RUS) 9:1 and Steve Leisen (LUX) with 9:2 to finish today’s work and can now take a good rest before tomorrow’s double elimination starts.

Oliver Ortmann (GER) had to fight a bit more for his merits but in the end won both matches. He seemed to have overcome last night’s tough defeat against Albin Ouschan. Ortmann beat Tobias Bongers (GER) 9:5 and Nico Mobilia (BEL) 9:3 to secure a spot for him among the final 64 players.

Current #1 ranked player Albin Ouschan stumbled in his second match. He defeated Berk Mehmetcik (TNC) 9:5 in the first group match but then fell with 8:9 to dark horse Luca Nicoletti (ITA). The outcome in this group will now depend on the third match. If Mehmetcik wins with a high result, Ouschan could be out.

Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012 - Jones eliminates Malai

Richard Jones (GBR) in his winning rack over Nick Malai (ALB)    Foto: EPBF/AMM

Last tour’s winner out in the first round

Thursday, 08 November 2012: In a tough match, Richard Jones (GBR) exited last tour’s winner Nick Malai (ALB) from the Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012.

Both players ran out their first racks and left a first impression on one another. Whatever they tried, none of the two contestants managed to get ahead more than two racks from the opponent. They both knew that one of them had to fall after this round since they got beaten by Maxim Dudanets (RUS) in the earlier matches of that group. Jones lost 7:9 to the Russian youngster while Malai even received a doughnut, losing 0:9 to Dudanets. So it was clear that Dudanets would lead the group and make it to the next stage. Whoever wins this match stays alive in the tournament while the loser will have to fall. Whether it was that knowledge or not can only be guessed, but both players started to commit mistakes and had some unforced errors.

To the likings of the audience, the tension in the match grew and it all led to a hill-hill situation at 8:8 with Jones to break. The Brit kept his nerves together and performed a good and solid break shot which left him a nice layout on the table. He ran all balls and defeated Malai by a whisker with 9:8.

Due to the group system that is different to the usual Euro-Tour system, each tournament day comes up with a different stage. Today, the group stage will be played. A total of 32 groups with three players each will play round robin. The top two players from each group advance to tomorrow’s double elimination. By the end of tomorrow, 16 players will be left. These final 16 players will play single elimination on Saturday to find out who will wear the crown of the Dynamic Billiards European Open 2012.

Other notable results include Thomas Engert (GER) defeating fellow countryman Klaus Zobrekis with 9:6. Together with Helmut Heck, the group consisted of three German players. Each of them won one match and lost one. Due to the worst secondary quota, Engert is the one who is eliminated from the event while the other two proceed to the double elimination stage.

The event will be hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) and organized by International Billiard Promotion (IBP). For further information and reference please go to the federation website www.europeanopenonline.eu , follow us on twitter @EPBF_News or contact our press office.
