Peeters v van Helmond in straight pool final

All Dutch clash coming up in Brandenburg

Monday, 06 August 2012: The straight pool final in the senior’s division of the Dynamic Billiards European Championships 2012 will be played between Rene Peeters and Gijs van Helmond, both from The Netherlands.

They had no easy tasks in their respective semi-final matches. Van Helmond had to deal with Jan Lundell (SWE) who had played a strong tournament so far. The match was pretty levelled with Lundell having small advantages over van Helmond. The Swede was leading 21:7 before van Helmond was able to strike back and overtake Lundell. But Lundell countered his attack again and got very close to the finish-line, taking a 73:67 lead over van Helmond. With only two balls away from the final match, Lundell missed and van Helmond got to the table running the remaining balls he needed and secured his spot in the final match.

In the other semi-final, Rene Peeters played against Christophe Creter (GER). Just like in the other match, the Dutch player was trailing big time of the match. In fact, Creter took a 65:47 lead over Peeters before he missed. In that stage of the match, Creter played too aggressive. Peeters used that to overtake him and come to 67:65. Peeters ended his inning with a deliberate foul which Creter should have answered with an equal foul in order to put the risk back to Peeters. But Creter went for a tough shot in the side pocket and missed it. That opened the door for Peeters to run out the rack and win the match to take his seat in the final match.

The final will be played at 20:15 CET.

The event is hosted by the European Governing Body for Pool, the European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) and organized by International Billiard Promotion (IBP). Correia got smashed by Lundell

Defending Champion in 10-ball loses his opening match

Monday, 06 August 2012: What a catastrophic start for Enrique Correia (POR), last year’s European Champion in senior’s 10-ball. After having had a walk-over in the first round, he got creamed by Jan Lundell (SWE) with 1:7. Lundell, who won over Steve Lambrechts (BEL) in the first round with 7:4, left no chance to the defending Champion in the match. While Lundell advances to the single elimination round of the last 32 players, Correia walks to the loser’s side of the draw where he will need to win another match in order to join Lundell in the single elimination of the event.

Another high profile player in the senior’s division is Manuel Pereira (POR). He also was not able to win his opener and fell to Thomas Radakovits (AUT) with 2:7 in the first round.

Last year’s bronze medallist, Jimmy Worung (NED) fulfilled the Dutch hopes in the early rounds. As a seeded player, he had a bye in the first round and then defeated Giorgio Margola (ITA) clearly with 7:4 to get a spot among the best 32 players.

After two years of absence, the ladies division has been resurrected. The four players in the winner’s qualification round are Susanne Wessel, Katja Kahl (both GER), Manon Melief (NED) and Monika Oeschger (SUI). They all have won two matches so far and will meet tomorrow at 09:00 CET.

Today, at 16:00 CET, the quarter-final matches of the senior’s straight pool competition will be played.

Wack demolished Woonings

Ralf Wack (GER) - Foto: EPBF/DK

Tough encounter between two great players

Sunday, 05 August 2012: In a high quality straight pool match, Ralf Wack (GER) demolished Martijn Woonings (NED) 75:35.

The round is the single elimination round of the last 16 players in straight pool. On paper, the match between Ralf Wack and Martijn Woonings was not spectacular at all. But their achievements during this competition so far attracted the attention of the audience.

So their encounter promised to be exciting; and that promise was kept. Wack opened the match after a few safeties in the beginning and took a 21:5 lead over Woonings. But the Dutchman fought back and gave the right answer to Wack, pocketing 25 balls in a row and gaining the lead again. That must have somehow upset Wack, since he went to the table and made 51 balls in his next inning to take a 72:30 lead over Woonings. What a performance! Woonings had one foot in the grave for the match - and he knew it. He played 5 more balls but then missed a tough shot. His self-confidence seemed to be destroyed by Wack. Then Wack made the remaining balls and secured his spot in the quarterfinals which will be played tomorrow night.

Other notable results include Jan Lundell (SWE) thrashing Klaus Zobrekis (GER) 75:10.

Further promising contenders for the title are Reiner Wirsbitzki (GER; won 75:37 over Giorgio Margola (ITA)), Gijs van Helmond (NED; won 75:16 over Heiko Mueller (GER)) and Jesse Thehu (NED; creamed Paolo Costa (POR) 75:2).

Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billiards European Championships for Seniors and Ladies will continue at 09:00 CET with the 10-ball competition in both divisions, seniors and ladies.
