BWPPA Event 1 Champion Fred Dinsmore congratulated by Darren Appleton
Dinsmore pops across the Irish Sea to snatch Northern 9-ball Open
The BWPPA raised the curtain on the 2012 season on the 4th/5th February 2012 with the Dynamic Billiards Northern 9-ball Open held at Riley’s Barnsley. The first stop on this year’s tour had its biggest entry for a number of events, with 19 players entering the event, including newcomer Andy Johnson from Manchester, who was able to win 1 of his 3 matches using a borrowed cue.
The tour got off to a great start with some excellent pool on show as usual at these events. “The Sandman” Roy Kimberley was keen to hold onto his number 1 spot which he has held since the tours inception 7 years ago, but he knew he had to equal Tony Southern’s performance at this event to maintain top spot.
Irish invader Fred Dinsmore took home the spoils though with victory in the Main Event notwithstanding an earlier 7-2 loss in a 2nd round match with last years player of the season Welshman Phil Hendrickson. Phil is bound to win one of these events in the near future. Dinsmore had earlier dispatched Matt Duffy 7-3.
Fred was sent to the one loss side where he steamrolled Matt Lester 7-1 and Graham McClounnan 7.1, then in the quarter finals he looked to be heading for another beating from Hendrickson, when he was trailing 6-2 and looked down and out, but from somewhere he began to pull the match back rack by rack, and after a great battle which went to a deciding rack, Dinsmore’s experience told in the end as he won 7-6. He then seemed to be on a roll as he beat Southern 7-4 in the semi-final, after Southern had missed a makeable 9 ball to make it 4-4, Dinsmore smelt blood and never looked back.
He faced Bristol’s birthday boy Danny Luton in the final. Luton had an even tougher start as he was dispatched to the loser’s side after a first round 7-2 loss to Aslam Abubaker, Abubaker would fall victim to the weather and was unable to return for his quarter final on Sunday. Luton then squeezed past Duffy 7-6, and then whitewashed Pete Dawson 7-0, before he eased past Craig Welsh 7-2 in his qualifier, he then received a bye at the expense of Abubaker, and then we move on to an epic semi-final with Kimberley.
Kimberley was showing the class that makes him virtually unbeatable, but at 6-2 up he began to show some nerves, as Luton clawed back rack after rack, and incredibly took it to the hill, a cat and mouse game then took place, before Kimberley missed for him a very makeable but somewhat awkward 9 ball from near the rail.
The Main event final between Luton and Dinsmore was a rather one sided affair, Luton never really got into the match and Dinsmore run out a easy 7-2 victor.
Thanks to ‘Dynamite’ Darren Appleton for presenting the trophies, which are provide for the tour by AB Wallace Trophies of Leicester.
Kimberley is now just 10 points ahead of Southern at the top of the rankings, and with the best 4 of the last 5 events counting, Southern will start the next event provisionally ranked no 1.
In the Challenge Cup Craig Welsh beat Adam Pearson 5-0. The BWPPA team head to Luxembourg in late March for the European Championships, the team captained by Southern also consists of Kimberley, Luton, Hendrickson and honorary Brit Dinsmore.
The 2012 BWPPA tour is scheduled to continue in April 2012 in Birmingham.
