Huidji See - Netherlands

Huidji See defeats Bence Varga - but World 10-Ball Champion not on his A-game yet

Reigning World 10-Ball Champion Huidji See (NED) defeated reigning European Straight Pool Champions Juniors Bence Varga (HUN) with 8:5.

The match was determined by many errors from both players. Unusual shots were missed from Varga as well as See. Both players started out equally. That goes for the good shots and the bad shots as well. When Varga was leading 2:1, he scratched while pocketing the 9-ball. Instead of taking a 3:1 lead, the score was then 2:2. But See could not really profit from that. In the very next rack, he missed an easy 3-ball and brought Varga back into the match. Varga seemed to be able to benefit from that and achieved a 5:3 lead over See. In the 9th rack, it was Varga to break. He pocketed three balls and even had a shot at the 1-ball. That was a big chance for Varga to take a three-rack lead over See. But he missed a makeable 1-ball. That was the turn of the tide for the Hungarian youngster. See played like substituted. He took a 6:5 lead himself. In the 12th rack, See missed a 2-ball after playing bad position for it. But instead of getting an advantage out of that, Varga also ran out of position for the 4-ball and missed it. He was not able to take one more rack off See. The Dutchman won the match with 8:5, sending young Varga to the one-loss side.

Other notable results include Damianos Giallourakis (GRE) defeating Thomas Poeschl (GER) 8:4. Karl Boyes (GBR) won surprisingly clear with 8:1 over Germany’s Dominik Jentsch. Mateusz Sniegocki (POL) remained victorious over Christian Reimering (GER) with 8:4. Konstantin Stepanov (RUS) fell to the sharp blade of Stephan Cohen (nothing), losing 6:8. Alexander Kazakis (GRE) sent Harald Stolka (GER) to the one-loss side with 8:2. Ivica Putnik (CRO) was the man of the evening in Croatia. He defeated “The Hitman” Raj Hundal (IND) by the skin of his teeth 8:7.

Thomas Poeschl - Germany

Ortmann sent to loser’s side - Peach and Tot join the German’s destiny

Former World Champion Oliver Ortmann (GER) surprisingly lost to unheralded Thomas Poeschl (GER) with 1:8. Ortmann never seemed to get a foot on the floor while his opponent was sailing smoothly in the match. Only the 5th rack went in favour of Ortmann who would have been a high favourite by most bookmakers before the match. However, Poeschl showed no mercy and finished the match 8:1, sending Ortmann to the loser’s bracket

Another major upset was Alexander Kazakis (GRE) creaming Daryl Peach (GBR) with 8:1, too. Peach, also a former World Champion, suffered the same fate as Ortmann. His opponent has played several Euro-Tour events now but was never expected to defeat a player of Peach’s class. Kazakis will proceed in the winner’s bracket while Peach joins Ortmann on the wrong side of the flowchart.

Talking about upsets, one of the local heroes also managed to hit the headlines. Balasz Miko (HUN) outscored Sandor Tot (SRB) with 8:1. Miko appeared to be more on his A-game while Tot struggled with his performance.

Other notable results include Philipp Stojanovic (CRO) defeating former Junior World Champion Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz (ESP) 8:3. The only woman participating in the tournament, Caroline Roos (SWE) won her first match over Elvis Ambord (SUI) with 8:5. Indian superstar Raj Hundal just managed to take his victory home over Russian newcomer David Maslov with 8:7. Chris Melling (GBR) won over Fabio Petroni (ITA) 8:6.

Wheelchair player Henrik Larsson (SWE) clearly won his first winner’s round match over Juan Carlos Exposito (ESP) with 8:2. Larsson had a walk-over in the first round and will now face Philipp Stojanovic in his next round.

Miroslav Kremenovic - Serbia

Solymosi loses to Kremenovic

The Hungarian team’s expectations were dealt a blow in the first round as Gabor Solymosi (HUN) lost his opening match to Miroslav Kremenovic (SRB) with 5:8.

The Serbian could be regarded as the dark horse before the match, but right from the start he proved that he did not think of giving the match away to favoured Solymosi. Instead, Kremenovic took an impressive 4:1 lead over the Hungarian player. Solymosi then realized that the match was about to be taken away from him and focussed on his match more, achieving a tie situation at 4:4. It looked like Solymosi found his way to victory but Kremenovic again played the better shots. He shocked his opponent by winning another two racks, making the score 6:4 in his favour. Solymosi tried to come back but he was only able to win one more rack. Kremenovic took the match with 8:5 and deserved the victory over Solymosi.

Other notable results include Andreas Roschkowsky (GER) smashing Thomas Engert (GER) with 8:1. Nick van den Berg (NED) took the victor over Oliver Mortier (BEL), winning 8:4. One of the tightest matches was the encounter between Erki Erm (EST) and Senharip Azar (SWE). Erm won by a margin of 8:7 over his Swedish opponent and sent him to the loser’s side of the tournament bracket. Germany’s Benjamin Heimmerer defeated Great Britain’s Scott Higgins with 8:6.

Hungarian “Megastar” singers opened the tournament

Wednesday, 28 September 2011: The Beassy™ Billiard festival week in Hotel Eger & Park in Eger, Hungary, has just been opened today.

The player’s meeting took place in the venue and was run by IBP President David Morris. Several information for the upcoming tournament was passed on to the players present. After Morris concluded his speech, the Hungarian “Megastars” Renata Tolvai and Atilla Kökeny performed a song each to the likings of all players present. The megastars who are promoted by Hungarian TV 2 also had the honour of executing the opening break shot for the festival week.

In the first tournament, the Dynamic Euro-Tour Hungary Open, 145 players from 30 countries will compete for a prize fund of over 42.000,- €. The event will be played in 10-ball, race to 8 racks with double elimination system played until the last 32 players are left in the field. From then on, the system changes to single elimination. A break box is used on the tables and the cue ball must be placed outside the box to execute the break shot.

After the opening ceremony, a short press conference took place where among others the owner of Beassy™ Ltd, Beatrix Dobossy explained some of her goals and expectations. “Beassy™ Ltd. is promoting and sponsoring the Billiard sport in Hungary by installing a professional tournament system on a national level. We want to do something for our players. It is a great opportunity for us to organize these events together with the EPBF here in Eger and to promote the sport in our country and world-wide”, said Dobossy in the press conference. “I am extremely happy with the professional equipment and conditions we find here in Eger”, stated the President of the EPBF, Gre Leenders. “We are pleased with the setup so far and the hotel is cooperating in a fantastic way in order to help us do our job”, said Leenders.
