| World 9-Ball Championships - Varga ousts Dimov in a thriller |

Bence Varga - Hungary “I love to play with a high risk”
Friday, 02 September 2011: In a match that could not get any more exciting and thrilling, Bence Varga (HUN) defeated qualifier Radostin Dimov (BUL) with 11:10.
On paper, the match looked like plain sailing for Bence Varga who is the reigning straight pool European Champion in the juniors division. And that is only one of the four titles that the 17-year-old boy from Hungary has collected so far. His opponent has made it to the tournament via the qualification event and was more or less a surprise to be found in the quarter-final match. But sometimes statistics are proven wrong… Dimov demonstrated in a very impressive way that he is hungry for a title. He played with so much self confidence that the spectators felt the pressure that he was able to put on Varga. “The match was not easy at all for me since my opponent played so strong”, admitted Varga after the match. As the match went along, both players tried to escape from the other’s grip and get a small advantage over the opponent but it did not work out for neither of them. Varga as well as Dimov stuck to the opponent like a limpet, not allowing any big lead to happen. So it was no wonder that the score was still tight as the match came to the final stage. Varga had a 9:8 lead over Dimov but surprisingly, it was the Bulgarian player to get to the hill first, leading 10:9 over Varga. In the 20th rack, Dimov had the break. He pocketed two balls and scratched unluckily since the cue ball was kicked in the corner pocket by an object ball. Varga took his time and ran the rack, tying the match at 10:10.
At that point in time the tension was so real it could almost be physically felt. The final rack was opened by Varga. He pocketed two balls but had no position on the 1-ball. Several safety shots were exchanged until Dimov played a foul shot because the cue ball scratched again. Varga played another good safe where Dimov could not find the right answer for. In the end, Varga ran the final rack and ousted Dimov 11:10. When asked about his sometimes risky shots, Varga mentioned: “I like the tough shots. I’d rather play a bank shot or a combination instead of a safety shot”. However, it worked for him this time. “I am so happy to belong to the best four junior players in the World”, said Varga, “now I must focus for my semi-final match tomorrow against Konrad Piekarski from Poland”.

Henrik Larsson - Sweden Other notable results include Marc Bijsterbosch (NED) winning over last German hope Lars Kuckherm with 11:4. Hometown hero Marek Kudlik (POL) creamed David Maslov (RUS) 11:9. Konrad Piekarski (POL) won over Vitaly Pavlukhin (RUS) 11:4. Darya Sirotina (RUS) was ousting Briana Miller (USA) with 9:6. Oliwia Czuprynska (POL) also made it to the semi-finals, defeating Karen Garcia-Gallego (NCA) 9:6. In the wheelchair division, Henrik Larsson (SWE) made his way into the semi-finals by handing a doughnut 7:0 to Leszek Blumcynski (POL). He will be joined by Fred Dinsmore (IRL) who crushed Roy Kimberley (GBR) with 7:4.
WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIPS - Kuckherm through to quarter-finals
Pavlukhin, Kudlik and Varga also among the top eight
Friday, 02 September 2011: In an intense match, Lars Kuckherm (GER) defeated David Maslov (RUS) with 11:7 and secured himself a spot in the quarter-finals of the boys division. It was the clash of two reigning European Champions: Kuckherm, European Champion in 8-ball in the juniors division against David Maslov, European Champion in 9-ball and straight pool in the pupils division. That was an encounter of two heavyweights. The match was performed on a very high level by both players. Maslov, though younger than Kuckherm, was the first player to achieve a 2-rack lead at 5:3 over Kuckherm. But that lead did not last long. Kuckherm tied the match at 5:5.
In the 11th rack, Kuckherm was a bit unlucky. He made three balls off the break and played a push-out which Maslov used to come up with a safety shot. Kuckherm took his jump stick out and pocketed the 2-ball, only to fall snookered behind the 7-ball, not able to see the 3-ball which was the ball on. He played a safety shot but left it in the open for Maslov. The Russian kid ran the rack and took a 6:5 lead again. From then on, things went Kuckherm’s way. He never made another mistake in the next five racks and went on the hill, taking a 10:6 lead over Maslov who was obviously shocked about Kuckherm’s precise play. In the 17th rack, Kuckherm scratched on the break and Maslov was able to get one more point into his account. After that, Kuckherm finished the match, termination David Maslov with 11:7. Kuckherm has secured a spot in the quarter-finals while Maslov needs another win in order to join Kuckherm.
Other notable results include Marek Kudlik (POL) just outscoring his fellow countryman Konrad Piekarski with 11:10. Russian sharpshooter Vitaly Pavlukhin extinguished the fires of Radostin Dimov (BUL), winning with 11:5. With the same result, Bence Varga (HUN) creamed Joshua Filler (GER). All four winner will play in the quarter-finals while the losers get another chance in the round of hopes.
WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIPS - Zabek sent to one loss side
Monika Zabek - Poland Garcia-Gallego wins over Polish wildcard player
Thursday, 01 September 2011: In a gripping showdown, Karen Garcia-Gallego (NCA) defeated local hero Monika Zabek (POL) with 9:8.
Zabek, who entered the event through an organizer’s wildcard, started off with a good and decent performance. She seemed to be in control of the match and took a quick 6:3 and 7:4 lead over Garcia-Gallego, making use of her opponent’s mistakes in the early stage of the match. But in the 12th rack, things changed in favour of the player from Nicaragua. She appeared to be more ambitious and did not commit any more mistakes. Instead, Zabek started to miss shots. The match became a thriller with an 8:8 score and the 17th rack coming up. There, Garcia-Gallego came out on top and won the match with 9:8.
Other notable results include Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) crushing over Takatora Miyaguchi (JPN) with 11:2. The Far East player never had a chance against the reigning European 9-Ball Champion in the juniors division. Jeff Robson (CAN) ousted Shawn Begay (USA) out of the event, defeating him 11:7.
Danny Olson (USA) barely stayed alive in the field, winning over Poland’s Marcel Fortunski by the skin of his teeth with 11:10. In the match between Hsien, Chia-Chen (TPE) and Maciej Wojcik (POL), Hsien remained victorious with a margin of 11:10. Before the two last rounds of today, an opening ceremony took place. Traditional singers and modern musicians performed to the liking of the players, officials and local celebrities present.
WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIPS - Li victorious over Zlateva
Nechaeva snatches win from Polovinchuk
Thursday, 01 September 2011: In a thrilling encounter, Li Pei-Rong (TPE) just outscored Kristina Zlateva (BUL) with 9:7. Zlateva, who came through the qualification tournament yesterday, had the better start. But after the score was 4:3 in her favour she never achieved to gain a lead over Li anymore. When Li was on the hill, leading 8:7, she missed the 7-ball and gave a second life to Zlateva. The Bulgarian went to the table and made the 7-ball and the 8-ball but missed the 9-ball. Li ended the match, winning 9:7 over a strongly fighting Zlateva. Also in the girls division, Anastasia Nechaeva (RUS) defeated Katerina Polovinchuk (UKR) with 9:8. Nechaeva had a comfortable 5:2 and 6:4 lead over Polovinchuk and everything looked like smooth sailing for her. But Polovinchuk played very focussed and made the match closer by closing the gap to her opponent, making the match hill-hill at 8:8. Then, Nechaeva proved to be as cold as ice. She had the break shot, showed no nerves at all and never allowed her opponent back to the table, running the rack and winning 9:8.
Other notable results include Monika Zabek (POL) winning over Natalia Seroshton (RUS) with 9:6. Belgium’s Kamila Khodjaeva took her match and sent Taylor Reynolds (USA) to the loser’s side of the event.
In the wheelchair player’s division, Henrik Larsson (SWE) took a clear triumph over Tankred Volkmer (GER) with 7:1. In the boys division, Konrad Piekarski (POL) creamed Marc Bijsterbosch (NED) in a very exciting match with 11:9. His fellow countryman Marek Kudlik (POL) won over Komiya Shonosuke (JPN) with a margin of 11:10.
WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIPS - Pavlukhin wins his opener
Block sent to loser’s side
Thursday, 01 September 2011: In a match that was characterized by a lot of tactical and safety play, Vitaly Pavlukhin (RUS) defeated Ignacio Block (ARG) with 11:7. It could be noticed already in the beginning of the match that both players did not want to take any risk in their respective first appearance in the World Junior 9-ball Championship. Until the score was 3:3, tactical play was mostly seen on the feature table. Pavlukhin won another rack to take a 4:3 lead over Block. In the 8th rack, Block looked like tying the score again when he made a fatal error, missing an easy 6-ball. As if that was not enough, he also missed an easy 8-ball in the next rack, allowing his opponent a 5:3 lead over him. But the player from Argentina did not surrender. He struggled and tried to get back into the game which he finally achieved, making the score 5:5. Then, as if history was repeated in the match, Block again missed easy shots and again Pavlukhin benefitted from it, getting a two-rack lead over Block at 7:5. A time-out was taken by Pavlukhin right after that. When the players came back, a shot-clock was introduced to the match since both players took exceptional long time to execute their shots. That was the turn of the tide for Block. He seemed to not be able to adjust to the new conditions while Pavlukhin continued to stay focussed with his performance. In the end, Pavlukhin won 11:7 over a strong Block who simply made too many mistakes in the end.
Other notable results include Brianna Miller (USA), last year’s silver medallist, losing her opening match with 6:9 over Oliwia Czuprynska (POL). Wojciech Szewczyk (POL) unexpectedly lost to Alain Da Costa (nothing) with 9:11. With a marvellous comeback, Marc Bijsterbosch (NED) won his match over Danny Olson (USA) with 11:10.
Joshua Filler - Germany Lucky winners take remaining spots for World Championships
After a long day of intensive combat for the remaining qualifying spots, the main field for the WPA World 9-Ball Championships for Juniors and Wheelchair is complete. In the girls division, Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL), Sabrina Hammer (GER), Katerina Polovinchuk (UKR) and Kristina Zlateva (BUL) made their way to the main field.
In the boys division, Balasz Koles (SVK), Radostin Dimov (BUL), Joshua Filler (GER), Mihkel Rehepapp (EST) and Marcel Fortunski (POL) will join the other boys in the main field of the boys division.
Tomorrow, Thursday September 1st, 2011, the matches will begin at 09:00 AM local time. The format starts in double elimination in all three divisions and changes to single elimination in the latter stages of the event. Wheelchair players play a race to 7, girls a race to 9 and boys a race to 11 racks.
WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIPS - One Day Away

The World Junior and Wheelchair 9-ball Championships are about to begin tomorrow, September 1st, 2011, in Hotel Lysogory, Kielce, Poland. Today, the last remaining spots are played for in two qualification tournaments in the boys and in the girls division.
