6-11 October 2010

Mika celebrates a very personal win over Sigel at the World Tournament

Two days ago Mika Immonen took an extremely hard loss in the controversial match with legendary 3x World 14.1 Champ Mike Sigel. Last night Mika had an opportunity for payback, and the outcome was poetic sweet revenge for the Finnish champion. Mika was able to take out Sigel in magnificent style Saturday night in a packed arena for the live streaming of The Predator World Tournament of 14.1 produced by Dragon Promotions. This is the 70th edition of the event, making it the world's oldest tournament.

The World Tournament is being played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event started play on October 6,2010 and ends on Columbus Day October 11th. The greatest straight pool players from around the world have arrived on USA's east coast again to New Jersey, and vying in this prestigious event to win the coveted title of World Straight Pool Champion. The event is co-sponsored by Amsterdam Billiard Club, Master Chalk, Aramith Balls, www.Ultimate10ball.com, and Accu-Stats.

Sigel ran 100&out against Immonen in a 100 to 11 route of the World #1 Immonen during the round robin stage. This put Mika in extreme danger of not qualifying. During this loss, Sigel made a questionable hit on the cueball. Mika called it a foul, Sigel disagreed. He continued his run and never gave Mika another chance at the table. Immonen refused to shake his hand afterwards.

In the aftermath review of the tape, Tournament Director John Leyman said it was a clear and obvious foul. At this point, it was too late.

"Read More..." for the details.

Mika gets over his last match with Mike and shakes hands before the match.

The drama of the match ran to the next two days and when the draw for the next stage of the event was done, fans were salivating at the prospect of a Sigel/Immonen re-match.

"I definitely thought about a re-match with Mike the past two days after he beat me. Everytime I thought of that match, I got motivated in my last two matches to qualify. You can say I was ultra-motivated," said Immonen. Mika needed to win his last two to have a chance. He won by landslides in both giving his opponents hardly any chances.

In the showdown of Sigel vs Immonen Part 2, Immonen looked like a man on a mission. Sigel looked dismayed as Immonen ran rack after rack. The Iceman, as Mika is known, looked sure and steady every shot. In the end, to the roar of the audience, Immonen gave a fist pump and shout with his 150 & out perfect match over Sigel. 150-0 final score.

"This match will definitely be a crowd pleaser for the fans who get the DVD. We are going to put it in a two episode DVD," said Pat Fleming, owner of Accu-Stats.

Does Mika believe in poetic justice?

"Absolutely. Actually, those were the exact words ringing in my head during my three matches leading upto Sigel again. Poetic justice. It exists. I proved it.", said Immonen. This was Immonen's first 150 & out run on film, and even more special to do in a real match at The World Championship.

Immonen advances to the final 16 once again. Sigel also bounced back to win over Shaun Wilkie and qualified for the final stage. A possible Immonen vs Sigel Part 3 may be in the works before the World Tournament is over.

Day 4 - The Predator 70th World Tournament

Williams Upsets Germany's Ortmann in Day 4 of The World Tournament

USA's Charlie Williams handed former World 14.1 Champion Oliver Ortmann his first loss of the event. Ortmann wasn't the only top undefeated player to suffer today. Jasmin Ouschan fell to Huidji See and Danny Barouty fell to Thorsten Hohmann. This week 48 invited players worldwide are vying for the Predator World Tournament title in straight pool.

Williams ran a 96 against Tom Karabotsos in his first match and then had to play back to back against Ortmann. The German was a heavy favorite, but Williams rising straight pool game had been one to keep an eye on. Ortmann led 110 to 14 in the race to 150. Williams then came with a better run than in his first match, a 118 high of the tournament thus far. He then played safe, Ortmann missed, and Williams cleared the rack plus a few more to get the win.

"I didn't really expect to win to be honest. When he was up by a hundred balls, I just told myself don't embarass yourself , go make a decent run", said Williams. Don't be fooled, Williams earlier this year won the Derby City Classic 14.1 and the Super Billiards Expo 14.1 events and has now added Ortmann's name to the list of straight pool legends he has taken down such as Mike Sigel, John Schmidt, Jasmin Ouschan, and Ralph Eckert. Williams is done for the day and has made it to the final 16 at The World Tournament again for the fourth time. He placed a career 5th last year.

Another dark horse Dan Heidrich is making some noise. From Rochester, New York (the same city as famed Mike Sigel) , Heidrich overcame Israel's Zion Zvi and then upset top seeded Li Lo Wen of Taiwan. Heidrich has played in two previous World Tournaments and this will be his first time in the final 16 races to 200 points.

"I'm so happy right now that I feel like I can pick up this whole poolroom on my shoulders!", said Heidrich after the match.

Day 3 - The Predator 70th World Tournament

Ouschan Hands Defending Champ a Loss: Archer #1 Seed at The World Tournament

The field has been cut in half at the Predator World Tournament of 14.1 as the round robin stage of the event is finished. After the smoke has cleared, it's the "Main Man" from Atlanta, Georgia Johnny Archer who has earned the #1 seed into the next stage of the event. At the same time, the last woman standing Jasmin Ouschan won a convincing match against defending champion Stephan Cohen to win her group. Archer and Jasmin join 6 other players who went undefeated, but no one could top Archer's performance of keeping his opponents to the smallest margin of points. This week 48 players worldwide are vying for the Predator World Tournament title in straight pool.

Archer ran 100&out in three of his five matches, completely blitzing his opponents. Dave Daya (USA), Jasmin Ouschan(AUT), Mike Sigel(USA), Ralph Eckert(GER), Lo Li Wen(TAI), Danny Barouty(USA), and Oliver Ortmann(GER) also went undefeated with perfect 5-0 records in their groups. These players all earned a bye in the next stage of the event and will be further rewarded to face a low seeded player afterwards.

The big match of the evening was Jasmin Ouschan versus defending World 14.1 Champion Stephan Cohen of France. Ouschan played a steady game but gave chances to Cohen in their TV match for Accu-Stats. But Cohen could not take advantage of his opportunities and did not play the solid pool that won him the title last year. To the applause of the crowd, clearly pulling for the young lady, Ouschan finished off Cohen 100-61.

The round robin stage of the event is over, and today begins the double elimination stage of the event. The races will now go to 150 points. After today, the final 16 players will be set into a single elimination race to 200 points knockout.

Day 2 - The Predator 70th World Tournament

Archer Runs Perfect 100's Twice: Sigel Beats Immonen in Controversial Match

Johnny Archer is showing once again he is no one trick pony. The 9-Ball master Archer ran a perfect 100 ball run to win 100-0 and 100-13 in back to back matches at the Predator World Tournament of 14.1. This week 48 players worldwide are vying for the Predator World Tournament title in straight pool.

Archer defeated Peter Burrows in his first match running out from the lag. And then again his next match against Jonni Fulcher. Last year Archer took the bronze in a 3rd place tie at The World Tournament.

In the highly anticipated Accu-Stats TV match, Mike Sigel faced red hot Mika Immonen. Living legend versus rising legend. But it would be a one sided war as Sigel ran rack after rack keeping Immonen in his chair almost the whole match.

But during the run, Sigel was elevated on a jacked up shot over a ball, while the cueball and object ball was very close and he shot and made the ball, with the cueball going forward several inches. But the shot was questionable on whether it was a double hit push or legal. Mika mentioned aloud that it could be a foul, Sigel kept on shooting. There was no referee on the shot, and Mika did not ask for a replay on the video. Sigel continued his run and eventually ran the set with Mika never reaching the table again.

"I believe that was a foul", Diliberto said during the commentary. The shot was replayed a few times for the filming, but no true conclusion was formed.

Immonen was clearly distraught over the incident. But nothing could be done afterwards.

Sigel has moved on undefeated and Immonen now has a 2 loss and 1 win record and is facing danger in not qualifying for the cut. He will need two wins now and hope that it doesn't go into a ball count tiebreaker.

Day 2 - The Predator 70th World Tournament

Ortmann escaped a 100-74 match against USA's Max Eberle

Clifton, New Jersey- Oliver Ortmann will be one of three Europeans this week who will be chasing a third World Championship Gold. With Ortmann's 100-74 win over Max Eberle, he comes within one step closer. This week 48 players worldwide are vying for the Predator World Tournament title in straight pool. This is the 70th edition of the event, making it the world's oldest tournament.

Thorsten Hohmann and Mika Immonen are the only other two Europeans who have two world titles already. No European in the world has three World Championships in their repertoire as of yet.

This week could change that.

Hohmann has won the World 9-Ball and the World Tournament of 14.1 before, while Immonen has a World 9-Ball and World 10-Ball title (both rotation pool games). Ortmann has a World 9-Ball and the World Tournament of 14.1 Both Hohmann and Immonen also won their respective first matches on Day 1.

Stephan Cohen of France is the defending champion and could make history as the first player in Europe to ever win back to back World Championship in 14.1 . Dutch players Nick Van Den Berg and Huidji See will look to improve on their past Bronze and Silver medal finishes at the World Tournament.

Day 1 - The Predator 70th World Tournament

Legendary Mike Sigel in Good Form on Day 1 of the 70th World Tournament

Clifton, New Jersey- Hall of Famer and living legend Mike Sigel is aiming for his 4th World Championship in 14.1 in this year's 70th edition of the World Tournament. Sigel, while chatting constantly throughout the match, managed to win a decisive 100 to 5 score over Jim Gottier of NYC, who finished 9th last year. Sigel is one of the many great players in the 48 invitational field at Breaker Billiards which is hosting this year's event. The world Tournament is being played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event will start play today October 6,2010 and ends on Columbus Day October 11th.

Gottier took some early negative points to go -98 while Sigel kept controle entire match. Gottier got one good open chance but was not able to capitalize. Sigel made some tremendous shots to the delight of the fans who can remember the famous "Captain Hook" from his stellar days on tour decades ago.

"I only won this three times? I'm pretty sure I won it six times, but back then they called it the US Open a few years instead of the World Championship. Oh well", Sigel was saying after the match.

Sigel will be facing a mouth watering feature against World #1 Mika Immonen of Finland at 8pm tonight. Mika will be fresh off his Challenge of Champions win two days ago.

Other highlights included Danny Barouty scoring one for the USA as he ran 99 & out against Netherland's Huidji See, who silver medaled in 2007. Barouty won 100-0. German favorite Thorsten Hohmann defeated Gerda Hofstatter of Austria 100-32. Oldie but goodie Dave Daya showed he was still dangerous with his 100-60 win over new 14.1 import from 9-ball Shaun Wilkie.

Day 0 - The Predator 70th World Tournament

Megan Smith First Ever Woman Qualifier for Predator World Tournament

Frederick, MD & NY,NY- Amsterdam Billiards of New York City and Champion Billiards & Cafe in Maryland both held the final two qualifiers for the 70th World Tournament of 14.1 . Four winners were determined, including a surprise female winner. Megan Smith, a veteran on the WPBA women's pro tour in the USA, came from the one-loss side to qualify. She joins Brett Stottlemyer who was the undefeated winner of the Champion Billiards qualifier. The main event takes place Oct 6-11,2010 at Breaker Billiards in New Jersey.

Smith has recently been seen getting coaching from legendary Mike Sigel, a 3x World Straight Pool Champion. It seemed the lessons paid off. Thanks to Gary Allen of Champion Billiards for hosting the great event.

An enthusiastic NYC field showed up for the Amsterdam World Open Qualifier. Two spots were up for grabs and the 2 tournament favorites were pitted against each other in the first round. In a battle of nerves, as was evident by the final score Holden Chin 100 Jon Smith 98, Holden held fast and won 2 more matches to secure a playoff spot. Jon Smith needed to come back from the loser’s side and play an additional 8 hours to secure the second spot. Three players came from out of state, 2 from Long Island and 1 from Brooklyn. One match took 4 hours(!)-these were 100 point games- while the final on the loser side lasted less then 1 hour.            Thanks to Greg Hunt, owner of Amsterdam Billiards. As usual Amsterdam was the perfect host room making sure the players received the utmost attention.
